Especially for Travel this is a must have Canon lens. There are 5 versions out there. The f2.8 is twice the cost and weight and except for those who MUST get the 1 ev increase I couldn't see the advantage. Recommend the IS. Would be nice if Canon included the tripod mountt ring.

Light in comparison to 70-200 2.8 My "go to" when I travel and don't want carry that lens around. Love this lens in the studio -- or when I don't need the 2.8
Personally, I think this lens is sharper than the 2.8 (or at least the first version of that lens).
I picked up the refurb. No worries and it looked and performed as a "new" unit. Other than having a refurb sticker on the end cap, I can't tell otherwise.

Used for scenery and wildlife, mostly while driving to and working at my wooded acreage. Focus is quick, and accurate. IS is wonderful, mostly eliminating need for a tripod. A bit heavy but certainly not more than one would expect for such a lens. The only cons I can think of are its color(white), since I prefer to remain less noticeable while shooting in public, and I think the Canon tripod mount should be included - considering the price.
I no longer have the lens, having gone to a 70-300 DO for its compact stature (for travel)and longer reach.

Bought this lens refurbished from Adorama and could not be more pleased. I could not tell the difference between a new one. If you are going to buy this lens, get the refurbsihed one and save yourself a good amount of money.

I use this lens as my primary lens for aerial photography. It is an upgrade from the EF-S 55-250 IS lens. Extremely sharp and very fast focus and effective IS. Heavier weight than the "consumer" lens it replaced, which seems to add some stability in the vibrating environmental of an airplane. Using with my Canon XSi body, and this seems to be a great match so far. Refurb lens looked basically brand new, in factory packaging with hood, lens bag, and documentation. I highly recommend Refurb as a superb value is you want to save a few dollars to upgrade to professional equipment. I will absolutely buy from Adorama again.

Bought a demo and I can't tell that it's not new. Works great and built like a tank. IS is a dream, colors and contrast are great and the images are sharp. It might have been cool to go with the 2.8 but I can't imagine it's worth the extra $700 or whatever unless you are going to be doing alot of shooting at dawn, dusk or indoors w/o flash.

This is a fantastic long lens to add to your collection, and will more than suffice if you can't bring yourself to plunk down for its f/2.8 big brother. You'll appreciate the f/4 and IS in low light situations. Wide open, it produces beautifully blurred backgrounds (bokeh). Recently brought it on a trip to the rainforest in St. Kitts, and got some great shots. Definitely happy with it.
