Comments about Canon Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM AutoFocus Telephoto Lens - USA:

This is the second prime lens I've bought for use with my XSi -- the EF 35 f/2 was the first -- and I love it. It's sharp wide open and gets even sharper stopped down. Focus is fast and accurate. Colors are rich and the bokeh is very smooth and aesthetically appealing. Great bang for the buck. I bought the 85 with the idea of using it mostly as a portrait lens and it is, indeed, excellent for that, but I find myself keeping it on the camera most of the time just because photos taken with it look so good.

Highly recommended. If you're curious about shooting with fast primes and can't spring for L glass, this is definitely the way to go.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM AutoFocus Telephoto Lens - USA:

The main purpose for the purchase was to take good pictures of my daughters ballet performances and my sons basketball games. I have used the lens in both scenarios now and am utterly impressed by the results. The fast lens allows for short enough exposure to capture the action without motion blur in very low light conditions. The colors are breathtaking. The only caveat is the somewhat restricted field of view as a result of the length. You do need some distance to capture a whole scene. So first row seats in a theater environment are not the ideal place to be.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM AutoFocus Telephoto Lens - USA:

This lens is great! I had some reservations about purchasing it after reading the "you need to stand very far back" comments. After using this lens a a local train yard.. I regret that I didn't get it sooner!! I have a 60D so yes the crop factor does require me to stand back a bit... but the results are AMAZING! Super sharp and a very buttery bokeh on portraits. If you plan to shoot a sports/ wildlife or anything outdoors...this is the lens for you!!!
I use this this lens for all the above as well as indoor concerts/weddings/portraits. Honestly for this price... you can't go wrong. Some comments mention that this lens should have an "L" attached to it.. I agree completely. I must also add that the weight of the lens along with the construction conveys a quality build.
Happy Shooting.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM AutoFocus Telephoto Lens - USA:

I'm really liking this lens and it has quickly become my new favorite. I mainly purchased this lens for outdoor portraits and street photography (when I don't want to be 'up-close') and I like the FOV it provides on my 7D.

I love the results I am getting with this lens. This lens is fast, sharp and has AWESOME bokeh! If you just love those creamy-smooth backgrounds - this lens is for you!

I haven't used this lens for video on my 7D as yet, but I am sure the results will be excellent if the results I am getting from still photography are anything to go by.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM AutoFocus Telephoto Lens - USA:

I just about talked myself out of this lens. However, I decided to pull the trigger as I needed a low-light basketball lens.

I am glad I made the decision to go ahead and buy it.

I decided that the 85mm is a focal length I use often. Plus, the 1.8 aperture gives a lot of flexibility.

I've only shot one game with this lens so far, and had very good results. I was able to do it without flash, at ISO800 and get a shutter of 1/400 (1/500 if I wanted to push it and edit some fill light in later) However, and while this should be expected with this lens when wide-open, I missed a lot of shots due to the focus (however, the shots I did get surpassed anything I had ever gotten with my canon 18-55 kit lens and canon 75-300 III + flash). When I say this, it's not the fault of the lens. The depth of field is so narrow at 1.8, in basketball, a defender could be in focus and the offensive player could be out of focus, and visa-versa.

Best results for sports are going to be found at the most wide-open setting you can use...just to get as large of a depth of field as possible. The 85mm focal length plus a 2.2 or 2.8 aperture setting on this lens fields very accepted background blur. Plus, as you stop down, the quality of the photos will increase.

Having used both L-series lenses and the cheap, consumer lenses...I would say this one falls in between the two. The build quality is good, the focus ring is good (a little stick), the optics stack up nicely to L-series, just slightly worse but still very acceptable.

I bought this for astrophotography use based on the MTF curves, it appeared to meet all of the criteria. I used it on a Canon 550D, and the results are very disappointing. Extreme coma is very evident making the lens unusable for astrophotography. It is however a very fine daylight portrait lens.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM AutoFocus Telephoto Lens - USA:

Purchased for Stage photography to supplement my 135mm F2 and 50mm F1.4 lenses on 5d MK II.

I like to use fast shutter speeds for stage photography, there are lots of dance and motion scenes that require a high shutter speed. Thus I find myself at apertures of F2 quite often. Although the 135mm L lens is supurb for this application, I often need a wider angle lens, and this is perfect for medium shots where I want a whole body to be shown.

Its sharp, focuses quickly, quite a bargain for its performance.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM AutoFocus Telephoto Lens - USA:

I had a 50mm f/1.4 that I got for shooting narrow depth of field, found the 50mm f/1.4 very poor sharpness at anything less than f/2.8. I got rid of it and replaced it with an 85mm f/1.8.

The difference between the two lenses is remarkable. The 85mm f/1.8 easily shoots wide open with good sharpness and has excellent color and sharpness at f/2.0-f/2.2 and higher.

On a crop body, this lens can be difficult to shoot without good technique below 1/100, after using this lens I really appreciate the image stabilization in my main lenses. Although you can easily shoot 1/60 or less with this lens, you have to really be aware of shake when shooting below 1/100.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM AutoFocus Telephoto Lens - USA:

This lens is incredibly sharp, with consistently clean performance and great contrast. While the 85/1.2 L is about as sharp, it's much heavier and is focus-by-wire, so if that extra stop of aperture isn't absolutely critical, the 85/1.8 is the lens to get. One of my favorite lenses, and an ideal one for portraiture. It'll do high pixel density sensors (e.g. 1DsIII, 5DII, 50D) justice, and show just how much resolution you can get from them.

Haven't had extensive use of it. Had hoped to get a EF 50mm f/1.4 lens but refused to pay the recent price increase [$] Seems okay, but seems a little difficult to obtain good focus. Still prefer my Sigma 70mm f/2.8 Macro lens for macro work (obviously) and some portrait photos of my grandchildren.

Although it is not the "L" version, this lens is still very good. I bought it for Dog Portraits and the quicker speed (vs. the "L") and of course the much cheaper price had me decide to buy this model vs. the 1.2L.
The lens is very good at f1.8, and very sharp at f2.8!

Comments about Canon Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM AutoFocus Telephoto Lens - USA:

I wanted a lens with a wide aperature, and this lens fits the bill. I searched the web for reviews on this lens before I bought it, and I couldn't believe how many people were happy with it. Now having owned one I can see why. The USM makes focusing a breeze, and the image quality is excellent. So instead of repeating what everyone has already said, I'll just include some pictures I took with it. In the Monkey shot, I focused on the eyes, and the nose is slightly blurry. With the Wizard, the top of his hat is only about 3 inches off the top of his head, but you can see how nicely the blur adds to the depth of the photo.
If you purchase this lens you will be very happy with the results!

Nothing but the best from Canon. This f/1.8 lens is great for portraiture. At 1.8 it gives you a very soft background and allows the viewer to concentrate on the subject. It is great at low-light photography as well. With very fast focus and whisper quietness, this lens rules. A very good value for the price.

Tried 50/f1.4 for indoor basketball games and portraits....The 85mm is as fast, more like a 130mm on my Rebel Xt. So quick that I can move from player to player in HS basketball and always know that it will be in focus. Lot less that it cousin 85/f1.2 and lighter too. Even used it with polarizer for sunrise/sunset with amazing results...maybe not an L, but still have change in my pocket....

Purchased to improve my portrait photography at charity fund raising events - this piece of glass has surpassed my expectations. Color, sharpness and contrast pop the images off the screen and paper. Great for low light - sharp as a tack over f/2.0 and not bad at f/1.8 in any case.

Many others say this should have a red ring around it - and I agree!

Comments about Canon Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM AutoFocus Telephoto Lens - USA:

I can’t Comment enough to the power of this one little lens.
Canon engineers knew what they were doing when they designed
This lens it’s perfect for the amateur all the way too the professional.
The (85 mm) is fast, quite and very reliable I have many lenses a few
Thousand $’s in just lenses but when I need a fast fixed telephoto I grab my
85 mm. or the just as killer 50 mm. these are the two lenses I use most for
My close and intament portraits shot in available light. These lenses
And other lenses alike.
Hand held shots are very possible in low light situations with any lens 2.8
Or faster so if you are a serious amateur or the dedicated professional this
Lens absolutely is a must have in the bag. I never leave home for a shoot
Without it ever, I know there are many great cameras out there with many
Choices but for the price why not get the best for you dollars, you can’t go
Wrong there right?

So Cheers good luck and happy shooting

Comments about Canon Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM AutoFocus Telephoto Lens - USA:

[...]I love this lens. Everyone talks about the "nifty fifty" the cheap little 50mm f/1.8 II. Have and use that lens as well but prefer this lens over the 50mm any day.Different focal length, yes, but I feel the colors and quality of the pics I get from this lens generally blows the 50mm away. I personally use this primarily for indoor, low light shots of toddlers and find it to be near perfect. Don't have to be in their faces on a 1.6 crop camera. Also, not as wide angle as the 50mm. Basically, I use that one more for a "storytelling," get the whole scene lens and the 85mm more as a closeup, face shot lens.Best of all, I've used the 85mm with good success for sports, late afternoon, dwindling sunlight. Got some amazing pictures of pitcher, infielders and batters. Granted, this is little league and access is close, but I'll put these pics with many I've seen from the big zooms. A round of golf with family yielded some AMAZING shots, even capturing golf ball in picture during swing. Green and flag beyond a gorgeous pond, my nephew in mid-swing and the ball frozen perfectly in between. AWESOME!!! Heavier than the featherweight 50mm, more solid feeling but certainly FAR from a big, heavy lens. With any zoom capability, this would be an amazing walk around lens. For any who like to use primes to "make themselves see/frame the shot," this is a great lens.Basically, with no zoom capabilities, YOU and your FEET do the zooming but I couldn't be happier with this lens. Granted, it's NOT a sub-$100 lens and the "nifty fifty" IS just too cheap to pass up but I like this lens 10 times better.Great for kids, great for indoors, good little beginner lens for some, repeat, SOME sports settings. Can't wait til fall and basketball, gymnastics, etc (Close range of course.)

Comments about Canon Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM AutoFocus Telephoto Lens - USA:

I love shooting portraits with this lens. Set the f stop at 2.2 and the background melts away.
Great resolution. I have blown up pictures where you can see the details of reflections in someones eyes.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM AutoFocus Telephoto Lens - USA:

Awesome results with my 30D - a bit too long indoors but you get used to it. Sometimes, color and contrast so good it rivals results from my L series lenses. Open up the "ap" and say goodbye to the background. I believe in only prime lenses and this thing should be in every serious photographers bag. Perfect for filling gap between 35mm and 135mm without breaking bank on the 85mm f/1.2 L.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM AutoFocus Telephoto Lens - USA:

Wow - does this thing focus fast!!
One of those lenses that should be in everybody’s bag. 85 mm is a tad long on a crop body for 3/4 length portraits, but would be perfect on a FF. Good though for head shots on a crop body.
This thing sucks light with it's huge 1.8 aperture, great for low light shooting.
I use it for indoor hockey, on a crop body the 136mm equiv FOV is great.
Silky smooth bokeh, and did I mention it focuses lightning fast??

Fantastic lens - simply cannot go wrong with it.
