This is a very well-constructed lens! The fast 2.8 is great in low-light conditions. I use this lens predominantly for macro photography. It's long reach makes it perfect for getting great shots from a good distance when that is desirable.
This lens also takes great portraits -- the bokeh is exceptional. One can take dramatic portraits without being very close to your subject.

I have used the 55mm Nikkor Micro lens for years with great results and this new 105mm is far better. Auto focus is fast and right on. Its very sharp. Its also a good all purpose lens for general photography. I use it on both FX and DX cameras.

I bought this lens for macro work and found that I used it more for portrait. Beautiful bokeh and sharp lens. For a "specialized" lens, I found it to be versatile and handled a wide variety of situations very well.

Drawback is the size and weight; I would have used it even more if it not been so big and heavy.

My 105 was recently stolen along with all my other camera gear and is the only piece that I will be directly replacing. There really isn't much better than this lens for what it does.

Very sharp and solid lens. The images I got are crisp and detailed. In, addition, the bokeh is nice and smooth. I used to have the Sigma 105mm and compared to the AF of that lens, this lens' AF is much quicker and quieter. Also, unlike the sigma 105mm, this lens has internal focusing so it dosen't extend.

A super sharp well built lens. I bought this lens mainly for imaging flowers but it does the whole world of macro imaging well! The VR works effectivley and the focus is super precise in manual and autofocus modes. I work using manual focus and shoot in low light conditions a lot so I really appreciate the ultra precision focus capabilities of this lens. If you do macro work, you will appreciate this lens. It works well on DX or FX format cameras. It works as a 157MM lens with DX format cameras and the extra reach is useful. I have used it with excellent results on a D40, D90, D300, D700 and D3. If you are into macro imaging, you will be very pleased with the results this lens will give you. The lens is very sharp both as a micro and portrait lens. It's optical quality will not disappoint. When used as a regular prime lens it tends to search a bit for the proper focus point. In light of the high price and company name that is a disappointment. Additionally, clicking is quite apparent and audible when VR is being used. Be sure to use only manual focus during micro photography. VR & auto-focus are of no use. The storage bag that Nikon includes is so cheap and flimsy that they should skip the bag.

I got this lens because my AF-S Nikkor Micro 60mm f2.8 requires me to be very close to my subject. Sometime the light source is behind me. The lens lets me move back. It produces the sharpest images I have ever taken. If micro photography is your thing, the is the best. The VR feature makes up for my camera shake. Much lower shutter speeds are possible, and my percentage of sharp images is amazing.

My 4th Nikon Macro lens, had two manual focus for my old F3's and have the new 60AFS lens. This is the only one I use now, the combination of longer focal length with the same speed makes this a real winner. I still like the 60 for portraiture, but the 105 is simply unbelievable. Clarity, color, bokeh, the shallow depth of field is a wonderful asset when you need it.

This is a great lens. All the things that you've previously read are true - sharp, low CA, non-existent distortion, etc. Just one VERY important thing to note. Follow the Nikon recommendations - turn off the VR, and manually focus - when using the lens for macro photography. Leaving the VR on for macro will subtly shift the focus point when the VR activates. The focus point then shifts back and this movement can create out of focus images. I know, because I inadvertently didn't follow the directions. Following the directions corrected the problem.

The auto-focus works great when you're not using the lens for macro photography. The limited DOF associated with macro means that you will want to turn AF off and focus manually.

The lens is also great for portraits.

Overall a nice lens to own.

On SLRs such as the Nikon D40,50,60, this is a BIG lens and tends to be weight forward. This is O.K., just be prepared for it. On a Nikon D80,90, 300 etc, the weight is well balanced and very proportional.

Images, are very sharp. The marco focal plane is very short and a tripod is really necessary for close up shots.

i use this lense on my nikon d300, together with the 18-200vr and the 12-24. to be honestly, it is my favorite lens right now.
i love macro work. bugs, flowers, all other objects that are prefered for that kind of images.
this lens produces razor sharp images, rich colours and enables you to work with dof in a creative way.
vr function in macro work doesn´t make too much sense, you mostly use a tripod. also autofocus is not the issue in that type of shooting. those both features get useful when you take this lens for handheld portraits, which is the second strength of this lens.
the lens is big and heavy. think about the size when you choose a camera bag. the weight is not a problem, even handheld.
i would buy again at once, even with the high price.

I've read some reviews and labs results that state the VR is less effective when shooting macro. I took some pictures of butterflies with the VR mode on and the edges of the wings were blurry but at the same time the butterflies were moving. I've also taken macro pictures of still and very small objects and the VR worked fine. So perhaps it's still to early to form an opinion of the VR capabilities when shooting macro. So far my only complaint is that the VR is loud.

My best advice would be to rent it first to see if it meets your needs. I am sure you will have to have it. Very sharp, nice lense.

I have really enjoyed this lens. As a matter of fact, I use it as much as possible. The only complaint I have is that the VR doesn't seem as good as I had expected. I also have the 70-300mm VR and the VR works wonders there. This lens seems to have less VR effect. Of course it's really not a fair comparison because I am the type to use all of the zoom a lens can provide and 105mm is closer to the short end of that lens. I'm sure it is loads better than a non-VR version. If I were to buy again I'm sure I would buy this lens again. I haven't used any other macro lenses so I can't compair it to other brands. Overall I would have to rate this lens as a very good lens as far as IQ and build. It's just a little pricey for macro only because the VR doesn't have any effect at close range.

This is not an everyday lens for me although it could be. I've used it extensively for the typical macro pictures -- bugs and flowers primarily -- and the pictures are specactular, very sharp. Best macro lens I've ever used. Would also be an excellent portrait lens.
It is expensive and it is very heavy. Both due in part to Nikon's vibration reduction mechanics which seem to work very well although I'm not one to test by experimenting with VR on and off. I now use various Nikon VR glass about 95% of the time.
Can't go wrong with this lens if you're willing to fork out the bucks and your neck will take the strain of a heavy lens.

I have used the lens several times since purchase. I bought it based on literature and reviews. I've been pretty happy, weight is a concern, it can get heavy. If you don't really need VR, I would at least consider alternatives. All in all I think it's a very good product, very well made - I think it will outlast me!
