Use with SB-400 Speedlight in low light levels if within flash range - otherwise use with monopod or tripod. Treat carefully, plastic can break if thrown around carelessly which is why Pros spend more for professional lenses.

this is now the lens i use the most. i rarely need anything under 55mm and the range gives me great flexibility in framing a picture without a lot of movement on my part. overall the lens feels great, seems solid, and takes perfectly clear, beautiful photographs. its even pretty decent in low lighting.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 55mm - 200mm f/4-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR (Vibration Reduction) Autofocus Zoom Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

I use this lens for most out door photos I do. The 200 mm (300 mm view angle on DX) is all the telephoto I need. Works best in daylight but VR helps a lot in lower light. I own a pretty decent collection of "last forever" manual focus Nikkors and the optics on this lens measure up. I do feel I need to be careful with it though, it does not feel as solid as my manual focus Nikkors. Takes great shots and I love using it.I did previously purchase a factory refurbished lens identical to this and experienced problems with it beyond the 90 day warranty. Being that this is a plastic lens, I would spring the extra $100 for a new one with a 5 year warranty.

Nice, sharp, inexpensive lens. For less than $200, it doesn't get better. The VR really helps make sharp images when hand holding any long lens. Even though the plastic mount can break if handled roughly, the lens is cheap enough to make it relatively easy to replace.

I purchased this lens mostly because of the cost. I have wanted a telephoto lens with VR for a few years now. Unfortunately the cost and economy haven't worked in my favor. I found this lens, refurbished, at a substantial price reduction than a new one. Must say, I couldn't tell the difference in a new one or not with this one.The lens has had "personal attention" to make sure it meets Nikon standards. It works just like I was expecting, flawless!I really enjoyed working with Adorama. [...]Would definitely buy from Adorama again. As well as, I would definitely be refurbished. You can't beat the price.

I took this lense out for test shots the day I got it. The AF works great, smooth and fast. I went with the refurbished product mainly because of the cost, but I also read the reviews from others. I am happy I chose the refurbished as I can't tell any different as if it is brand new. If you need a low cost great zoom with VR and AF I strongly suggest you go with this product as I did and am very excited. I can't wait till I get the time to take out for more wildlife shoots.

I also own a Nikon 70-200/2.8 VR. Believe it or not, when shot between f/5.6 - f11 and at the same focal ranges, this little lens gives image quality that is very hard to tell from its big brother on DX. I shoot this lens frequently on my D700 when I need to travel light and am shooting outdoors. Even at 5 MP (D700, DX), this lens takes excellent images. Just beware that the AFS is slow and the lens mount is plastic and cannot take much abuse. Bought mine refurbished from Adorama, best [$] you will spend!

This is a great all around lens. It gets excellent photos for the price, and gives a very wide range of longer distance shots.

I have been watching this product for several years, trying to justify purchase. The price was finally right, and I made the plunge. I have a D-40, and it works beautifully with the camera. I use it for outdoor nature shots, closeup shots of my "pet" squirrels and birds from my office, and shots of my son's sporting events. The only complaint I have is that it is not so good in low light situations. I would recommend to others like me (non professional)

Thought I would try out an inexpensive zoom. Did not think it would be this bad! VR function is weak and almost ineffective even with a steady hand. 90% of handheld shots had motion blur with VR on. Got better results with a non VR zoom and monopod. Also, the optics were the worst of any lens I have ever used. Ugh! Returned it! Save your money for a better lens.

Great light-weight lens for walking around shooting city/landscapes, people watching. Focus is fast and accurate. Zoom does not creep, though it does make a noisy "klunk" at each end of the zoom range. That's to be expected with a plastic body though and not a problem unless you are shooting quiet events in small venues. But this is not the right lens for that kind of work.

I wanted a budget friendly lens for taking some sports photos of the kids. It has been great for taking shots at my son's football games. Great distance, freezes action, and overall has been great. I tried indoors for my daughter's bball games but its just not quick enough in the low light (I wasn't expecting it to handle that but worth a try). Overall you cannot beat the deal.

I really cannot give a "technical" review of the lens. I am very much a beginner. I purchased my D3000 about three months ago and I love it. Wish I would have bought one sooner. I picked up a book on how to use the camera and now can go through some of the next lessons. All I can really say is that it is exactly as described by Adorama. The price was great and I am very happy with the product. I happily recommend this site to anyone I know...

I wanted to get my wife a lens that a medium zoom but was still aa good close up lens. This has been my wife's favorite lens to use. Rarely will she use anything else now. I has a very fast focus which is great when trying to get on the fly shots. No real cons to think of! . . . . An all around great and afordable lens. It makes a great addition for any photographer.

Outstanding close focus! Fast consistent zoom. Very good auto focus. For an all purpose lens at this price, you will not find a better product. Sure it has a plastic mount, if it were a hammer that might be a concern, it's not! It is a precision tool that requires the proper respect in our disposable society. I have a dozen Nikkor lenses. Every one is still in use. The VR does improve shots in low light conditions by 3 to 4 /f stops, not bad! Just leave the VR on and don't play with it. Used with both D100's and D50's it functions without any issues. Can you find a lens with a greater zoom range? Yes but at 10X the price. If you break it get another one. Like I said to start, if you don't have one what are you waiting for???

I read what seemed like a hundred reviews of this lens so I was not expecting anything pro-level. But wanted to give it a try to see if it could be a decent travel lens in adverse conditions. I have got to say that right from the box this refurbished lens was a disappointment. The AF would miss 7 of 10 shots and the focus problem was even worse in VR mode. I shot about 100 photos to see if the problem would go away and it did not [...] This is the second refurbished lens I have taken a chance on this year and both times the purchases were defective. Others may have had a different experience but the time, effort, and postage I have wasted trying to save a few bucks is simply not worth it. I'm sticking to new lens with real repair warranties.

Great deal for the money. Mine is a refurbished, and definitely worth the cheap price. I shoot mostly wildlife in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. Gives great pics of herds of longhorns or buffalo up to about 100 yards. Good for closer-up pics of cardinals and painted buntings and eastern bluebirds on my outdoor feeder, about 10 yards away. Hard to go wrong with this lens for the money.

While Nikon 55mm - 200mm lens is not the fastest zoom out there, for the price it offers great performance. This lens lets you experiment both with high zoom (300mm equivalent) and your camera. This lens also gives you an inexpensive way to understand zoom photography, evaluate your needs.

Best thing - it holds it's value, so if you decide to upgrade later on to something more serious - you can do that without huge loss.

This is a great lens for the money. But having said that, it still has major drawbacks. The focus is a little slow and the first generation VR is nothing like the second generation VR that the 70-300mm or the 18-200mm has. If you can put it on a tripod or you're in day light it's pretty good. In that case the only problem is that it has some pretty intense vignette/drop off. But still for the money, it is very sharp and very light.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 55mm - 200mm f/4-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR (Vibration Reduction) Autofocus Zoom Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

This lens is good for portraits, flowers, kids and, with a little practice, action shots of the kids playing sports. Keep in mind that while this lens is not by any means a pro quality lens, it's price and versatility make it a must have. If buy, say, the Nikon 70-300mm VRII telephoto zoom lens, will get faster focus, a metal mounting ring and more range. Along with those features, you will pay nearly three times the cost, get far more weight, and bulk. There are other Nikon zooms that are faster and somewhat better optically, but they cost in the thousands of dollars.

The 55-200 AF-S VR does everything you want it to do at a great price. The optics are excellent. Don't be fooled by the plastic construction. Modern plastics are very high grade. While the plastic mounting ring isn't the most desirable, it's does help keep the cost down and works well.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 55mm - 200mm f/4-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR (Vibration Reduction) Autofocus Zoom Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

The 55-200 is a generally good performer. It captures images with excellent clarity, sharpness and colour reproduction, a lot better than I expected when I researched it. There are two major downsides I can name with this lens. Firstly, the autofocus is dreadfully slow. I thought it would have been a good lens to capture birds but on many occasions by tht time I get it focused, the bird has moved. The other con is its performance in low light. It simply doesnt open wide enough for most low-light situations. You'll find yourself having to boost ISO, use flash or reduce shutter to get an acceptable exposure. The VR performance is excellent though and helps maintain sharp-shooting even down to 1/80s, thats as slow as I went anyway.
Buying refurbished was not too bad. Price was great and product had all the appearances of a new lens. Any consideration for purchase should be made in the context of your budget. If you can afford it, go for the 70-300. this was my first zoom lens and I've found that after reaching the 200mm end of the range Im left needing more.

I read the reviews before buying this lens, don't really know what refurbished means. Focus is not snappy a little noisy. But VR locks in the focus. The kit lens that came with my camera takes sharp images, but at 135mm they aren't as sharp as 200 can be with VR.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 55mm - 200mm f/4-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR (Vibration Reduction) Autofocus Zoom Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

Bought this as a Nikon refurb, and the price was so low that it was a (semi) no brainer. Problem is - severe visible chromatic aberration in the lens as well as unreliable focus, and issues with the VR. I don't know if it's me, the design of the lens, or a defective lens. When shooting with VR turned on, I get a defined ghost or double image (good luck tryin to Google this issue... d'oh!) about 1/2 the time. When shooting on Continuous High, I'll get the double image on some, and clearer on others, with no rhyme or reason. Under the same conditions, with VR OFF, no ghosting. Very odd. Also, the chromatic aberration on this lens appears to be very severe. Again, I don't know if it's expected with a sub-$150 lens, or if I got a bad apple. Of course, I can't expect Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II performance out of this lens (of course)... but I expected more. I live 5 minutes from Nikon repair in El Segundo, CA. I'll drop it off there at some point...

Comments about Nikon Nikon 55mm - 200mm f/4-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR (Vibration Reduction) Autofocus Zoom Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

This refurb lens works as well as I would expect a new lens to work. Once it's out of the box, it looks and works identical to the new product.

The 55-200mm zoom is great for getting close-up to your subject from far away, as long as there is enough light available, as this is a somewhat slow lens at 200mm. That said, however, you'll get some great photos when the light is adequate. If you need a fast long lens, you'll have to pay significantly more.

For the photographer (or aspiring photographer!) on a budget, this is a great lens to add to your kit.

I'm not sure if mines is just a little noisy because I bought a refurbished one? Still a great lens and it only makes very little noise, but my other lens that my camera came with is completely silent, so that's all I have to compare it to. Takes great pictures, but not so good for macro photography because you have to be so far away from something in order for it to focus right. Well worth the money esp. for begginer photographers or photo enthusiasts. Great for scenery and wildlife.

If you don't have the $ to get a 300mm, this will get you close enough to produce very sharp images at full zoom. I use it w/ a D90 and I am really happy with this range personally, and I would recommend this lens refurbished or new as a 'no worries' low cost lens.
Lens creep is not too bad, but w/ the hood on it is easy to bump and drag it out accidentally. It does not lock, so it is good to careful if you leave this lens on your body and walk around.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 55mm - 200mm f/4-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR (Vibration Reduction) Autofocus Zoom Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

Using the lens on a D40 might be part of the reason for the slower focus. It isn't bad by any means, just slower than other DX lens' that I have. The VR works well and helped with panning at a kids soccer game.

Over all I like the lens but have to shot a bunch more to get comfortable with it. Just another excuse to shot more!!! ;)

I love this lense. The only drawback I have found is that it is not well suited for indoor photography and I find myself switching back to the 18-55mm lense. Aside from that, the photos have been incredibly clear.

Companion lens to 18-55mm kit lens used on Nikon D5000. Camera was a gift for my wife who out grew her Nikon coolpix camera. She has really enjoyed this camera and has taken a basic photography course and likes the 55-200mm vr for outdoor landscape. I like this lens for nature shots of wildfowl; fast focusing lens on light weight camera that is light years ahead of my old Nikon F and manual focus 200mm lens.

I do the product photography were I work and will be using the lens there as well as for my own personal use.

I saw several reviews say that you will need a lot of light for this lens to produce good pictures. I would have to take issue with there assessment. When I got home from work (well after the sun went down) I took the lens out of the box, mounted it on my D80 and got some great tack sharp shots with nothing more than ambient light (VR is Nice)of some mumms in a flower arangment my wife had on the dinning room table at ISO 100 in aperture priority to control the depth of field.

The lens is reconditioned but looks like brand new, I really wasn't expecting this great a product for the money. Cudos to Nikon for another great product.

The "refurb by Nikon" telephoto is working fine so far. I was a little concerned, but the VR, the zoom smoothness, and the focusing smoothness are all perfect. The optics are nice and sharp. I'm feeling good about this lens and its longevity. The only con is the max f-stop is relatively small which limits some of the things you can do. But that's the tradeoff for lightweight and convenience.

The autofocus and the VR button are really easy to use. And just because it says refurbished doe's not mean that it is a top quality lens.

I was ready to send it back until I read some reviews and found I was too close to the subject for AF and VR. I tried several brand new lenses in stores and they did the same thing. Comments about Nikon Nikon 55mm - 200mm f/4-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR (Vibration Reduction) Autofocus Zoom Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

This is a great lens if you are on a budget and looking for a telephoto zoom lens. According to the product specifications at Nikon's website, this lens zooms to an equivalent of 3.6X. It doesn't sound like much, but for most everything that I used it for, I was very impressed with the zoom capabilities. The VR function is great! I zoomed in on a for sale sign approximately 150 yards away (much too far to read), and the VR enabled a nice sharp picture that I could read after enlarging the photo. Without VR, the picture was always blurry from camera shake.
It wasn't until I tried taking pictures of elk from a long ways away that I suddenly felt like this lens did not have enough zoom. It just doesn't compare to a pair of 10X binoculars. My summary is that this zoom for most normal shooting is sufficient. For doing any kind of shooting that you also use your binoculars for viewing, this is not enough. But for the price, this is a very good lense. FYI: 70-300mm = 4.3X, and 80-400 = 5x.

This lens is amazing. It's light, it's sharp, and very affordable. Plus it has VR. It's optically brilliant and very sharp. Read Ken Rockwell's review. He loves it and so do I.

I've used it for sports and also for portraits. If you get the subject fairly close to you using a longish focal length you get decent bokeh.

Check out some of the shots in the Flickr group for this lens. Very good IQ. If you can't afford a 70-200mm f/2.8 then this will do very well as long as you're shooting in decent light.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 55mm - 200mm f/4-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR (Vibration Reduction) Autofocus Zoom Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

This is a great lens for the money. Sure,it's not fast, and it's made of plastic, but to get a lens that is f2.8 would cost 10 times the price of this lens. An f2.8 lens would also be about 3 times heavier.Plastic construction alows Nikon to make it cheap, light, and good. For use on DX cameras, in daylight, this lens is fine. It is sharp, quick to focus, and the out of focus backgrounds look good. The zoom control is smooth enough, and the focal lengths are evenly spaced along the zoom range, they don't bunch up at the ends. It's light, small and easy to have with you at all times. The VR feature makes it possible to shoot sharp photos at 1/60 or sometimes 1/30 of a sec. at 200 mm. Remember, this lens is the equivelant of an 80-300mm zoom. The VR makes up for some of the lack of speed. If I had a fast tele zoom, I would still cary this on brite days because of it's ease of handeling.
I gave it 5 stars because it performs better than anybody should expect a cheap lens to perform. The Referbed by Nikon version is no diferent than a new lens, except for the warenty is only 90 days and the box is diferent.
If you have a DX camera, this lens is a must have 2nd lens. It,s a nice complement to the kit lens that comes with many DX DSLR's

Comments about Nikon Nikon 55mm - 200mm f/4-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR (Vibration Reduction) Autofocus Zoom Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

I have a Nikon D40 with a 18-55mm kit lens. I wanted a zoom lens that wasn't too expensive. I 'studied' the different onlines which one to get with consideration to what I want and the price I was willing to shell out.I like the way Rockwell gave reviews of the different lenses. This lens fit the bill. I tried looking for this in other stores and learned that it's sold for $250. I decided to check out Adorama. When I was there in the NYC store at 18th Street, I was given lots of options by Larry. I ended up buying a Nikon refurbished 55-200 lens for a lesser price.

I honestly was worried at the beginning but the lens worked just like brand-new. In fact, it is a very hardworking lens. While holding it to shoot the subjects I want, it searches for the correct focus. I am able to choose whether I would want the nearest subject or the background subject in focus.

There were times that I was disappointed when using this lens though. I can't use it with subjects within 3 feet, it will come out blurred. It also does not respond properly with poor lighting unlike the 18-55mm. I also had blurry outputs. I wonder if it's me or the lens. Either way, this lens comes with good things and the not so good things. It's another hardworking lens at an affordable price.

This is good for a travel lens but the 18-200 would be better suited. Knowone likes to change lenses in the field. So a lens of wider range is recommended. But for use for ameture wildlife, this is a good value. Plastic construction and slow focusing. But what do you want for $200 range. A sharp and contrasty lens though.

This refurbished lens is a great deal. I would never have been able to tell it was even refurbished. Do look at the grades Adorama lists though since you don't want one with scratches, etc and get the highest grade if possible. I had to bring my this and my other lenses with me on a trip which made my camera bag heavy. If you can swing the 18-200mm lens, I'd say it's better so you don't have to switch out lenses. This lens does focus well and captures the colors and objects in the background with crispness and clarity. Make sure to get the one with VR!

I am using this lens with my D50. It has a very useful focal length range, the optics are good for the price range, and the VR works well. If you're shooting sports or action, I'd recommend pre-focusing whenever posssible, but you're already doing that anyway ;). While not up to pro use, it's a very good hobbyist lens that yields very satisfying results.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 55mm - 200mm f/4-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR (Vibration Reduction) Autofocus Zoom Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

I bought this lense as a "Nikon Refurb". I was skeptical because I had never bought a "used" lense before but wanted to give it a try after consulting the helpful Adorama folks. I used the lense immediately after I received it and noticed that the lense does a fairly large shift once the shutter was released and I was concerned it would affect my photos. So I called Adorama and asked to do an exchange for a "new lense". After receiving the "new" lense, I realized that this lense performed the same way. In hindsight the "refurb" may have not been a bad item, but maybe just a flaw in the product.

With that said, I appreciate the lense for the nice pictures it takes and it's lightweight. For the price it was a good buy and I am glad to own it, but I am also back to looking for a new lense with a longer focal lenght and a bit better construction. I hope to eventually add the Nikon 70mm-300mm VR lense to my inventory to use for shooting my kids sports.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 55mm - 200mm f/4-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR (Vibration Reduction) Autofocus Zoom Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

I purchased this lens instead of the Nikon 70 - 300mm VR because the price on the 55 -200mm unit is almost 1/3 less than the 70 -300mm lens. Due to the relatively compact size, I can store the camera with the lens on. I believe the 55 - 200mm range on this lens, is more usable than the 70 - 300mm range. Remember this is a DX lens so the actual range is the product of 1.5 times the actual lens specified range. Be aware also, this is not a professional grade unit, however it is sharp and focuses fine under day light conditions. There is no reason why you can't get great sharp pictures with this lens. The VR feature is very good and I find it very useful for night photography, specially when focusing beyond 70mm. I am please with the purchase, the lens does not come packaged in a fancy colorful Nikon box, instead it is well packaged in a plain brown box with a Nikon "Refurbished" sticker. It includes also a 90 day warranty card but you can purchase a MACK lens warranty from Adorama. The unit does include a generic lens cap and a storage Nikon bag along instructions and 90 day warranty paperwork. It is my opinion that if the refurbished item works fine for 90 days then there is no reason to fail after that period of time unless it is dropped or abused. So paying 2/3 of the price vs the new unit is worth it, specially if you want to use this lens occasionally for non professional use.

This is pretty much my primary len that I use. Mostly for wildlife, Auto shows, and family shots. One thing that is great about it is that. It is not as large as the 2.8f's. and can be carried in a small shoulder pack. It does a very good job as a general use len. If your knowledgeable about using your iso,f stops, etc.. you can manipulate the len to take excellent pictures. So far the only thing that I found so far is that the nikon len focus is a little slow.
