If the lower price were not a factor, I would still choose the Tamron 100 Macro over the more rugged Canon 100 Macro. There is little difference in sharpness at most apertures. The Tamron is shorter and lighter. I prefere the softer look of the our-of-focus backgound which is a nicer blend (bokay). Autofocus is not as quiet as the Canon lens. The newest Canon has IS, but this may not be useful in macro work when the lens must be stopped dow to f/16 for DOF and the Macro IS Canon is much more expensive.
Because the lens is set back no lens hood is needed unless you use a filter. The front element of the Canon is at the end of the barrel and needs a hood.

Takes great shots, but I dropped it from no more than a foot, and the lens hood and filter thread broke off. Still works, just a little disappointed with the build quality.

It is an excellent macro lens - very sharp, no distortion, great colors and contrast. Mine had a front-focusing problem that only showed itself wide-open, but Tamron took care of it quickly under warranty.

The focus is quick enough for action, but is no USM - it does hunt some, as would be expected of a typical macro (the barrel also extends during focusing, but that allows it to stay an actual 90mm at 1:1, unlike the Canon that is more like a 70mm at 1:1).

The build quality could be better, but it is an acceptable trade-off for its almost pocketable size.
