After losing my original Nikon lens cap, I replaced it with a third-party cap that had small tabs extending beyond the diameter of the lens. This caused it to auto-remove every single time I pulled the camera (D300) out of my snug camera bag. I finally bit the bullet and paid the cost for this Nikon cap [...] I should have done it sooner! It's so nice to pull out the camera and still have the lens protected by the cap. The two-way (end-on or diameter) release clips work reliably.

I bought a generic lens cap when I lost my Nikon cap and found it very difficult to take on and off. Even thought the Nikon cap was almost double the money, it was worth it.

I've become more dedicated at using the lens hoods for my lenses, not my normal habit. The Sigma lens for which I bought this product came with a Sigma cap that snapped on only from the edges making it difficult even for my small fingers to get the cap on with the hood in place. The Nikon cap can be pinched in the midle for easy-on/easy-off and installs easily while the hood is in place.
(Why not just take off the lens hood you ask? The hood is a very tight fit on this lens requiring two hands and a good bit of force to remove it. The snap cap was a much easier solution.)

The 72mm lens cap comes with the Nikon 18-200 mm VR lens. Works great, but watch out when traveling, especially overseas. I lost it about half way through my trip to Turkey last spring -- probably at an archeological site. If the cap is not seated just right, it will fall off. Couldn't find a Nikon dealer near where I was, so I bought an off brand cap, which rarely would stay on even though it was the right size. I finally broke down and purchased the genuine article a few months after returning home. I suggest investing in a UV filter to protect the front element of the lens. Put the cap in your pocket when you are walking and/or shooting. If you bump and scratch the filter, it is far easier to find one of those overseas than it is a genuine Nikon lens cap.

Lost my original Nikon lens cap and had to buy a non-Nikon replacement, which didn't work well with the lens hood. Good to have the Nikon version, which works fine.

The original lens cap was of the old Nikon design & easily dislodged, that's probably why I lost it. This new lens cap fits better, even with filters mounted on the lens. The design also makes taking it on/off much easier when the lens hood is on.
