Comments about Canon Canon Lens Hood EW-78B-II for EF 28-135 IS:

While this hood is just plastic as others have noted, it is a thoughtfully designed plastic hood.

It feels like a quality "engineering" plastic, has a felt lining, twist locks to the lens securely with only a quarter turn and has locator symbols to quickly line up the hood for use or storage. All nice touches that justify the price...well almost anyway.

It is a petal design which is good but, of course, it is also designed to work correctly with a full frame sensor. So far it seems to provide good results even with a APS-C sensor (1.6 crop).

My only complaint is that I feel every lens should ship with a lens hood. Buying a separate hood should be a replacement issue not a basic functionality issue. Shooting without a lens hood is rarely a good idea outdoors so making the hood an "option" is like saying that outdoor photography is an option. Top-tier lenses come with hoods so I guess the thinking is: cheap glass is only for people that don't care about lens flare.

Comments about Canon Canon Lens Hood EW-78B-II for EF 28-135 IS:

I bought this one, to replace the one I dropped in the lake.. ooops. It`s a good lens hood.. very functional, and easy to use. But it is a bit large, when it comes to putting it into my camera bag. That`s the only real issue I have with it, and I can certainly live with that. I do also like the way it mounts to the lens, on the outside of the filter threads, so a filter can still be attached.

Comments about Canon Canon Lens Hood EW-78B-II for EF 28-135 IS:

A proper lens hood is an actual extension of the manufactures original quality design. The lens hood blocks off axis light from entering the the camera. The "Petal Shape" of many lens hoods is a specific design feature for preventing vignetting on wider angle lenses while offering maximum protection from off axis light.

In traveling a camera usually gets banged about no matter how careful you might be and the lens hood absorbs most of the shock and protects the actual front lens element from a direct blow thus preventing breakage or other physical damage.

I have a new 28-135 IS USM and it did not have the zoom creep problem until I added a UV filter and this lens hood. The added weight of these two items causes the lens to zoom out with no resistance when the camera is pointed down.

Other than that it functions as expected.

Conveniently twists on and mounts to the lens protecting the front from accidental bumps and prevents flare caused from off the subject light. The whole process reverses as easily with petals facing inward so remounting makes for more compact transport.

Comments about Canon Canon Lens Hood EW-78B-II for EF 28-135 IS:

Contrary to many reviews I have read that claim this product is an overpriced piece of plastic, this lens hood does in fact have a velvet-like material that lines it, serving to attract dust and other particulates away from the lens itself. From using this product, I can say it is useful, it does it's job (directing sunlight/glare away from the lens), and I would recommend it.

Comments about Canon Canon Lens Hood EW-78B-II for EF 28-135 IS:

Historically I am used to metal hoods (Nikon) I have come to like the plastic hoods such as this. My cameras get heavy use, so they are in and out of the bags, roughed up a little while I run to catch the action etc...and these hoods do not show the wear that the metal hoods do. I still think Cannon should supply the hoods with the lenses...but.. Adorama is a great place to purchase equipment!

This lens cap lets too much light in at times through the cut out portion and you need to use your free hand to help cut the glare. It's also difficult to get the lens cap on and off as it's a tight fit and tends to come off too easy. Overall, functions as designed.

Comments about Canon Canon Lens Hood EW-78B-II for EF 28-135 IS:

Generally good for controlling stray light.
Offers some level of protection for the lens as well.
Must make sure it is on in the proper position, ( with Words facing up) so that there are no shadows when the flash is used.
The lens this fits on is a little "soft"
not as good as the 17-85mm, however the cost of the 28-135mm is reasonable for an IS lens.

Comments about Canon Canon Lens Hood EW-78B-II for EF 28-135 IS:

The lens hood does its job: eliminating/reducing glare that is outside the frame and provide some protection to the glass from bumps and scrapes. It also helps the AF by reducing the glare which can frustrate the AF-system.It is great when moving through crowds and tight spaces because it protects the glass from those bumps, brush-bys, and scratches which can ruin the lens ([$]...so protect it).The only two problems I ran into were:-slight shadow at 28mm when the pop-up flash is used.-lens cap is difficult to remove and impossible to put back on once the hood is on. So, remove the lens cap before putting on the hood. Two additional benefits:-lens hood can be put on backwards for storage with the lens and will allow the lens cap to be easily used.-makes your lens look even more pro.

A great Addition to my lens.

Comments about Canon Canon Lens Hood EW-78B-II for EF 28-135 IS:

This is a great accessory for anyone with the lens. It works great on filtering out unwanted peripheral light that could otherwise damage a good shot. The light absorbing textured material applied to the inside of the hood helps cut down on even more unwanted light. You will need an external flash if you use this hood, as the Canon built in flash will not illuminate around the lens and hood. Taking the hood on and off takes a little practice, but overall it is a great purchase.
