A pro photographer friend who's been coaching me on making better photographs suggested I get a light meter. Of course my 7D already has a meter, but I borrowed one of his and found I was getting much better exposures more consistently.

So I bought the same one he uses, the Sekonic L-358. It's a great little meter and easy to use. The only hard part is figuring out how to clear out the memory function (there are a few button press combos that aren't obvious, but they're seldom used.) For straight-up metering it's very simple though.

I bought the 358 + radio module together since the price was just a few bucks more than without. I don't own any pocket wizards right now, but I could see using this in the future with them.

A really nice feature is if you're doing long-exposure shots, this meter will give you the number of minutes to keep the shutter open, where the camera limits the exposure to 30 seconds. Before the Sekonic it was trial & error.

I've tried all the metering modes on the 7D, and this is just better. Period. Maybe for landscapes I'd go with a spot meter or an attachment for this meter, but for everything else, this is the way to go. The only downside I can think of is that you have to remember to take it with you when you're heading out the door.

I use this mostly for studio work but find it a help in many different situations where light is dim and iffy - Think "Old Basketball Gym" where you're trying to balance max shutter speed to stop the action and max aperature to increase DOF. In such cases it seems to be more accurate than the built-in meter on my D700.
It is light, fast, easy to use and seems fairly robust. I didn't get the PW module as I decided to see if I liked the unit before committing even more of the considerable sum it takes to purchase this item.

Perfect meter for studio and other uses. I cannot like this meter more--UNLESS--the lettering on the function buttons could be printed in black instead of silver to make the labels more easily readable. That's just nitpicking.

Sure, you can guess or chimp and come close to the right exposure after several shots but you won't get the accuracy of this meter in just a few seconds.

I own Sekonic L328 analog use it for years and wanted to up grade. I use this to measure both ambient light and flash. Its really easy to read, set up and use. It has all the functions you need to get the job done plus a couple extras.

I'm using this for determining studio flash setups faster. It works well, but with a minor catch for Pocket Wizard FlexTT5 users (and I assume MiniTT1 users).

Documentation says the remote trigger for the L-358 will trigger any Pocket Wizard. The L-358 uses the standard Pocket Wizard channels, but the FlexTT5 does not. To get these to work together you have to use the Pocket Wizard configuration utility to set one of the TT5 configurations to use the standard channels - which means E-TTL won't work for that configuration.

It is a nice meter for the price. Analog display is small and a little hard to read for an old guy like me!! battery size is a bit of issue, make sure you have a backup battery.

Perfect! What more could you ask for! This has everything I need and is accurate to the T. I went back and forth between this and the more expensive Sekonic and with the triggering module included I could not ask for more. I was a bit skeptical about the construction as compared to others and I am delighted with the overall quality. This is a must in helping to find that perfect setting and understanding lighting!

I use this for both flash/strobe portrait work and for interior architectural work. It is outstanding at giving a reading that lets me know the percentage of light being provided by my strobes vs ambient light. This is very quickly becoming a key tool in my bag.

This was one of the best purchases I made. I swear that it has definitely made a difference in my work. It's easy to use and the belt clip thing makes it easy to carry around with me. I don't have anything bad to say... except maybe that I wish it used a cheaper battery, and one that you could find at a regular grocery store.

I use this meter mostly in my studio (maybe because the weather has been cold and I'm not shooting outdoors). Once you master the sequence of the controls, it is an extremely accurate way to balance lighting and determine propper exposure. I had an old Minolta flash meter and this runs circles around it. Very glad I purchased it.

You need to be pretty good to get your exposure right in a studio with strobes - all guess work just checking your histogram.

This meter gives you an accurate reading when your strobes go off - just set your shutter speed, iso, set your strobes off and measure the exposure - easy!

for the money its hard to beat and very accurate. If you us Pocket wizards get the module for it so you can go cordless. Its an accessory you need if you are dealing with lights.

Great light meter!...accurate and makes my lighting ratios and camera settings accurate....I have the built in PW module so it works with my PW's on my lights...highly recommend this module...makes it easy to set off the strobes.

The only flaw of this product is that it is not compatible with European wireless flash standards; it can only use the American wireless module. If you live in Europe and are planning to use the wireless module, you should buy the specific European model instead. Otherwise, this is an excellent product!

Although my DSLRs have in-camera metering, I prefer to make my own judgements. I've been thoroughly pleased with my Sekonic meter. I am able to get my metering spot on without trial and error, and it is very easy to use.

My first time to own a light meter and I'm delighted with the instant success I'm having. For getting a flash measurement I used this meter with some $20 cheapo radio transmitter sets attached to some 2nd hand flashes (SB24 / SB25). The transmitter connected to the meter by means of a small wire, this was my way of triggering for now, I have the internal transmitter but didn't use it yet.
Simply stand where the subject will be and press the "Measure" button and the flashes will fire producing the settings for the camera. Instant perfect exposure. Of course modelling the light is another job altogether.

i bought this to use in my home studio where i do portraits. it is quite easy to use and with the appropriate cord allows me to fire my strobes to get a light reading. i highly recommend this incident light meter.

I have a small studio/location setup using hot shoe flashes and pocket wizards [@]. Before buying this flash meter I just used the LCD display on my digital camera to review the exposure. The results were hit and miss. Using the flash Sekonic flash meter, I'm able to get great exposure with every shot. Now I only use the camera display to review the composition.If you use Pocket Wizards - get the RT-32 Transmitter.

It makes it real easy to take group shots using bounce light. I have my strong flash aim at the white ceiling to get bounce flash. I get my perfect exposure with my Sekonic L-358, then I just shoot from different angles. It is a big source light and everybody is expose properly. Even people that are close to the camera are not over exposed. I took a picture of a bride and groom sitted on a table, framed by a mariache and their instruments. By knowing the exosure of the bride and the groom, and bouncing the flash, I got a picture that I couldn't get with an on camera flash. I give that credit to my L358 and its programable controls. I knew it was giving me the perfect exposures I needed from all angles and distances.

I purchased the transmitter module (works with Pocket Wizard system)with this flash meter and am glad I did. Not having to attach cords to my strobes or camera is safer and far more convenient. This flash meter has allowed me to attain proper exposure from the very first try. It was recommended to me [...] when I was looking into purchasing my strobes. Once my equipment is set up all I need to do is stand in front of the camera where my subject(s) will be, aim the meter at the camera and press the button. I have an instant and accurate exposure reading. To check exposure difference between the primary and secondary light just aim at the strobe and press the button and adjust each lights output. Indoors or out this meter performs flawlesly.I recommend the L-356 meter with the transmitter module and suggest getting the Pocket Wizard transmitter and receiver modules for camera and lights for an excellent and easy to use set up.

I get perfect exposed outdoor photos. I set up my L-358 to a perfect exposed face histogram using my custom camera settings. That gives me the perfect exposure. To get perfect color balance I use the preset white balance setting on my camera. All I have to do is use the Auto Mode with its custom settings and Bingo, I have a perfect exposure and perfect color balance.

This combo flash/ambient light meter may lack some specialized features for some photographers, but, for my work (largely portraiture) it perfectly fits the bill. It's easy and quick, has more features than I need (usually) and delivers accurate results.

The meter is very easy to work with, even if you're a first-time user. I've used it to check exposure while triggering a pair of strobes via cable and it was very fast and intuitive to operate. Having the flexibility to add a wireless radio trigger is also something I'm looking forward to down the road.

The meter comes with a Lumigrid that replaces the dome ("Lumisphere") for measuring reflected light - my only minor gripe is that there is noplace in the included case to store the lumigrid when not in use.

This is exactly what I was looking for in a meter. I don't need (or want) all the bells and whistles as the majority of my work is outside. It works when I need it to every time. I highly recommend this meter for beginner to pro.
