Comments about SanDisk SanDisk Extreme IV Compact Flash Card I & II Reader / Writer, with FireWire 800/400 Connectivity on Windows and Mac Operating Systems.:

One of my first downloads was a card with 298 Jpeg's and 298 Raw files I had the camera set to capture both. I put the card in my old USB reader and after a while it showed it would take 3 hours for the download. Then I removed the card and inserted it into the San Disk Firewire reader and it show it would take 5 minutes to download those same images.
I think about all that time I wasted waiting for the USB reader to download images.
I'm just sorry I waited this long to get the San Disk Firewire reader.

Comments about SanDisk SanDisk Extreme IV Compact Flash Card I & II Reader / Writer, with FireWire 800/400 Connectivity on Windows and Mac Operating Systems.:

This CF reader works exactly as described and advertised. All the critics who complain about connectivity or compatibility, try reading the specs first instead of just *assuming* it will work because it says Firewire/PC. You need to know the abilities/compatibility of your equipment.

Knocking the product or the company just because of your own inability to read the details FIRST is not a accurate review of the product. It's rather a review of the reviewer... ;)

Cons:
Poor Interface
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about SanDisk SanDisk Extreme IV Compact Flash Card I & II Reader / Writer, with FireWire 800/400 Connectivity on Windows and Mac Operating Systems.:

Be sure to check that your computer's Firewire port uses a 6-pin connector to actually power the card reader. My card reader has worked one or two times, but mostly my computer cannot detect it. From message forums it seems to be a power issue that, of course, Sandisk doesn't mention in their product description, but that is related to the type of pin/terminal connection. Awful product, cheap build and overpriced for what it is.

The build quality is good. The shell is made of metal. The transfer speed can reach what it says. Very useful if you want to transfer pictures faster to your computer, and save the battery for camera. It provides two types of cables (4 and 6 circuit), I can connect it to both my pc and mac.

Yes, FW800 is faster than FW400, all right but 2g per minute transfer time as a reveiwer wrote, is, IMHO, a stretch. I have an Extreme III 8g and MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz and am getting 1g/min with an Express Card/34 CF reader; still pretty good compared to my FW800 reader.BTW, the FW800 failed recently after just four months of occasional use. Didn't drop it or anything like that. All pins intact, of course. Waiting for SanDisk Tech Support (www.sandisk.com) to respond to my warranty replacement request.

regretfully this card reader has unadvertised faults. It is claimed to be the best and fastest card reader for mac user's however the firewire 400 cable/reader DOES NOT work! you can only use the fw800 cable, fast but not dual capable.

so what you have here is a 1/2 card reader.

it should therefore only cost 1/2 as much...

Comments about SanDisk SanDisk Extreme IV Compact Flash Card I & II Reader / Writer, with FireWire 800/400 Connectivity on Windows and Mac Operating Systems.:

Firewire is more expensive than USB 2.0 when it comes to card readers, but this unit is worth the cost. A recent camera upgrade increased my file size from 5 MB to 14MB, making a USB card reader too slow for business. This unit is speedy, downloading files as quickly as you'd expect a Firewire device to operate. It has a clean design, and a felt pad on its bottom helps keep it in place. It is also smaller than the product photos indicate, which was a nice surprise (doesn't take up too much desk space). Keep in mind, however, that this device is for Compact Flash cards only.

With my images and CF cards getting bigger all the time, transfers to my Mac using my old USB 2.0 reader were staring to annoy me; downloading 4 16GB cards could easily take more than two hours. The SanDisk Firewire reader changed everything - supposing you have a firewire-capable PC or Mac and fast cards. Unfortunately, it only works with CF (not that you would find really fast micro-SDs around the corner). Great buy !

Comments about SanDisk SanDisk Extreme IV Compact Flash Card I & II Reader / Writer, with FireWire 800/400 Connectivity on Windows and Mac Operating Systems.:

I've used this SanDisk Extreme IV Compact Flash Card Firewire Reader on my MacBook Pro 2.53Ghz, Intel Core 2 Duo(running 10.5.6) as well as on the first Intel MacBook Pro, PowerMac G5 and I have had not a single issue.

I am using SanDisk ExtremeIV 16GB card and the shots recorded on this card is with Canon 5D Mark II.

The RescuePro Software that comes on the CD that says MacOS 10.1+, will not work. I should say, you wont' be able to install it without getting a version compatible with Leopard (10.5 or higher). I believe it's because in Leopard, it uses a flat package installer and does not support the older installer. Just call SanDisk and then they will give you a phone number to call. Rescue Pro is actually made by a different company. This company will give you the version that works on Mac running Leopard or newer but you need a serial number to give them so don't throw away the CD envelope/sleeve as the S/N is on that.

oh, this comes with two Firewire cables. One is 1394a-1394b, and 1394b-1394b. In short, if you own a mac, one of these cable should work for you.
One is the firewire cable that you can connect

I'm so glad I bought this FW CF card reader. I was using an old usb 2.0 version that was so slow. This is connected to my Macbook Pro via Firewire400. I do a lot of photography so I usually download 1-2gb of RAW image files at a time. The performance is almost twice as fast as USB (I timed it with a stop watch).

It's simple to use and compact. I would highly recommend this to anyone who downloads a lot of data off CF cards.

I am a Windows guy, but bought my wife a new iMAC to replace her old computer. She is a photo hobbist with a Canon Rebel EOS camera. Using a USB 2.0 it took lots of time for the large .JPG files to download from the camera. As a matter of fact it was enough time for her to fix my dinner. Now with the card reader she can barely get out of her office. Great for her, but not so good for my food consumption.

If you take lot of pictures and your tired of waiting for pictures to download directly off your camera or from a USB 2.0 CF card reader, this little thing leaves them in the dust!! If you have a MacPro/MacBook Pro/New iMac just plug into your FireWire 800 and it's off and running, nothing to download or install!

I had about 800 pictures on a 4GB CF card take about 40 mins. from a USB 2.0 card reader and when I ran it through this thing it was about 10 mins. (maybe less). This thing is fast, fast, fast... I love it! It makes USB 2.0 look like it's sleeping!!! So wake up and buy one now you won't regret it!

Great construction, but a real challenge to hook to my Dell laptop. Cables included weren't enough to make the connection - there's a 1394b to 1394b and a 1394b to six-pin FW, but no four-pin FW cable included.

Comments about SanDisk SanDisk Extreme IV Compact Flash Card I & II Reader / Writer, with FireWire 800/400 Connectivity on Windows and Mac Operating Systems.:

I got this to move the larger (file size) photos from my new camera to my hard drive. The USB cable solution was slow and burned the camera battery. This little thing is very fast and looks well built (I've been using it for a week so no long term experience yet). I use 4 and 8 GB CF cards and it can take forever to download a full card using the camera's USB port. This is a much better solution.

My only wish would be a "slide out of the side" style connector so I could lose the cable when travelling.

I've never seen a laptop w/out 6 pin Firewire. It works perfectly on any Mac laptops with Firewire 400, 800 or 800 converted to 400 & vice versa (if your 400 or 800 is in use by another peripheral that can't be "daisy chained").

Only improvement would be ability to "daisy chain" peripherals like these - but would would increase size & cost!

Although this reader is a priced a bit high the performance of the product added by the speed produced will easily make up for the priced paid. By matching up this reader to a extreme IV card and using the 800 to 800 cable i am able to transfer 3.8 gigs of raw photos in a little over 3 min.

Comments about SanDisk SanDisk Extreme IV Compact Flash Card I & II Reader / Writer, with FireWire 800/400 Connectivity on Windows and Mac Operating Systems.:

My time becomes more valuable day by day. I thought it couldn't get any faster to download images from my CF cards. When I attach the Firewire 800 cord (included) to my Quad Core 2 Mac Pro, a 2 gig card is downloaded in a little over 2 minutes.

Now I can't wait to upgrade my MacBook Pro to a Quad Core 2 so I can have a Firewire 800 port. In the meantime SanDisk was nice enough to include a 800 to 400 adapter cord in the package.

Comments about SanDisk SanDisk Extreme IV Compact Flash Card I & II Reader / Writer, with FireWire 800/400 Connectivity on Windows and Mac Operating Systems.:

Nothing in the [...] description states that this will not work with a 4 pin Firewire port. Upon arrival I found in small print in the manual that this reader must have 6 or 9 pin port. I have yet to find a laptop that has more than 4 pin port so essentially this is a desktop only device. Perhaps more technical knowledge of Firewire 400/800 specs would have helped me, but I think it should have been made more clear.

Probably the fastest reader out there. Photos import into my Mac over Firewire 800 really, really fast. Works as advertised, and is fast. I've owned several readers over the years, some Firewire based and some USB 2.0 based. This one beats them all in terms of speed. I also like the compact size. Very easy to travel with you and your MacBook Pro.

Only problem could be - if you misplace the (supplied) Firewire 800 to Firewire 800 cable, or Firewire 800 to Firewire 400 cables you'll find them a little harder to replace than the more ubiquitous 400-400.
