Both items are beautiful functional works of art. Quality glass lens appears to me as truly 3X. Nicely finished brass. I'm delighted to have found this item at such a reasonable price at ADORAMA, it's twice the price at some other sites.
I finally can part with my old cheap junk scratched plastic & aluminum magnifier.

On closer examination, it appears to me that the magnification is 1.5X, possible 2X, but I don't think it's 3X. I determined this by placing a measuring stick on top of the glass and then examining another measuring stick through the glass, the magnified image of 1 inch measures 1.5 - 2 inches, not three. Perhaps the method I used is not that used to establish specifications.
HOWEVER, I'm still very satisfied with both items.
