Comments about Adorama Ador Heavy Duty Socket with Light Stand Adapter & Umbrella Holder:
i bought this for use with a huge 300 watt fluorescent bulb i picked up [...]. i read a review before buying that said it was poorly made, but since i live in NYC and adorama has a great return policy, i bought it anyway. i also had picked up [...] a clamp on light socket with reflector for like 9 bucks, and it turns out the bulb was too wide at the base area and wouldn't fit in. this seemed to be just the thing for the bulb, and cheaper still, plus it's and umbrella holder! easy choice. I tried it out today and so far no complaints. the switch on the back is streamlined and definitely a plus. the bulb screwed in and out solidly and i had no looseness issues like the other reviewer. the unit itself is very light, and has the ability to mount on a stand vertically or horizontally. the cord is not grounded and doesn't seem too thick, and all the connections and seams are very solid. seems like the perfect thing for a fluorescent bulb or strobe bulb. Also the umbrella shaft was able to clear my huge fluorescent bulb's base no problem.

"Heavy Duty" is really not an accurate adjective for this unit!
I bought two of these for use with AC powered slave strobes. Both of them broke the first time I screwed in the strobe unit. I did not overtighten the bulb, but as soon as I snugged it up, the metal threaded ring popped out rendering the bracket useless. Looking at how flimsy the metal ring is, it's no surprise it broke.
JTL makes a similar unit (though it's more expensive) and I have one of those that works fine. I'd recommend that.
