Comments about ExpoImaging Expoimaging Ray Flash Adapter for Canon 580EX with Canon 5D, 40D, 30D, 20D & 10D Cameras:
The ray flash is great as a fill flash device indoors and out and it does deliver on the ring flash look without sacrificing too much output. There are a couple major issues I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere:
1. Red Eye can be a problem, the ring blocks the red eye reduction and it isn't wide enough of a diffuser to eliminate red eye in some situations, especially low light for light eye colors.
2. AF: Again in low light the camera will struggle to focus because the ring flash blocks the infrared focus assist.
I use the ray flash on the 580EX2 with the 5d Mark 2 and the 7d.

Great device for portraits - soft shadowless images when you have to use direct on camera flash, better than bounces and diffused devices to soften the harshness of the flash. Reasonably process, not too bulky to use. Seems to be well engineered for the purposes it was intended. Easy access to vital camera and lens controls.

For on camera flash it is better than any other device that I have used in 40 years as a photographer. I think I have tried them all at some point. The light is diffused well and the catchlight is great. Have shot portraits, weddings and even some macro work with excellent results in every one. I also should mention that it also works on the Sigma DG 500 Super that is my backup flash on my backup 5D camera. Even though it isn't listed as working on it. I just wish I hadn't bought it when it was [$] but then I wouldn't have gotten those great shots last year.

Just got the product today and it broke on the first testing. there is a locking device on the thing but it is not marked which way is locked and off. when I thought i had it unlocked and tried pulling the flash unit out the thing came apart. I will have to use some black gorrilla duct tape to hold it together and I haven't even got a shot off with it yet. Pretty disapointing in that respect. It does seem like a great little gadget though, but expected a little more durability from such a pricey thing.

It is a nice option if you do not have the enough money to buy a pro ringflash. The problem came when you make a vertical shot, the effect it is diferent to a real ringflash, it make you a deep shadow when you have a long distance between a wall. It is amazing in the snapshots, or something casual, it seems like a 40´s paparatzzi shot. I recomend this product for the people who want lightweight in his back and a cool experience with a little money invertion.

I tested a few shots immediately right after I received it. The light is certainly softer than direct flash from 580EX. For close up shots, I still get best results by bouncing the light from 580EX. I think the ring size could still be bigger. As it is, the light source direction is still too closed to the camera lens.
This ring light is best probably for portrait as an additional fill-in light.
