I bought 3 of these for use as a mobile studio in the strobist stle of photography. The boom is capable of taking a flash head and 40 cm softbox, although at full boom extension the boom exhibits some flexing. This is no problem however. I add extra weight to the stand legs when doing this. Manfrotto makes a solid product. I still use a manfrotto tripod i bought 30 years ago, so hopefully will not need more light stands for quite some time.

I don't have any other 'boom' stands, so can't compare, but I am very happy with mine so far. It's the same quality as other Manfrotto non-boom stands, of which I own three. I have mine supporting a Nikon SB800 and a 36 inch umbrella. It seems very sturdy, and setup was simple. The clamps hold tight. I like that I can get the umbrella directly over the subject, and fairly high.
