Traditionally, wedding and event shooters have been limited in their audio capture capabilities because they have been “forced” to take an audio feed from the band or DJ in order to record that audio onto their field recorder. Instead of relying on the DJ or band for an audio feed to record, Ray flips the script and actually provides the band a balanced audio feed with a surprisingly simple setup.

Instead of plugging a feed from the mixer or soundboard into his field recorder, Ray simply utilizes a 3-way splitter to intercept the wireless mic receiver that was originally plugged directly into the band or DJ’s mixer or soundboard. Once he plugs this receiver into his splitter’s input, he simply feeds one end of the splitter’s XLR output into his field recorder, and he gives the other XLR output back to the DJ or band to plug back into their soundboard. This allows Ray to directly record the audio being received by the wireless mic receiver to his field recorder, which eliminates the undesirable signal noise that would normally accompany an audio signal passing through a mixer or soundboard. This audio configuration literally takes seconds to setup, and it makes all the difference in the world.
