In January, Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson, two world-class rock climbers, captivated a global audience by vying to achieve a first for their sport: a free ascent of the Dawn Wall of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. Corey Rich was one of the photographers who spent 10 days living on the side of El Cap with his friends as he documented their historic ascent. In this Tech Tip, Rich tells the story about how he captured arguably his most widely published image from this adventure. After 10 days of living on the wall, you might think that Rich had already captured every scenario possible. But by remaining open to the creative process – and with a little help from some extraordinary evening light-Rich turned an “average” climbing scenario into an extraordinary photographic moment that ultimately came to symbolize what this adventure was all about. The takeaway is even when you think you’ve exhausted every scenario, never stop taking pictures and always be looking out for those rare fleeting moments before they pass you by.
