This headphone is for users who know the sound of real live musical instruments and like a natural headphone sound without artificial flavorings.  While accurate, the sound is not at all dry or clinical.  All in all, there is an unusual combination of detailed clarity with a fully fleshed out rendering of timbre.  Highly recommended!

An amazing headphone!

I was not sure if I should get this although I already have the ER2 series, however, I didn?t regret.  These are definitely a step up in clarity and separation.

Good choice for upgrade

Fantastic sound. A bit weird at first in terms of comfort, but you get used to it. It's best if you don't pop them in and out of your ear a bunch.

The low end is nice and tight and controlled, and the highs are never too harsh. Best sounding earbuds I've ever owned.

Superior sound

Fantastic headset.  I?ve had the ER3XR for about a year and recently bought the ER4XR.  The ?4? is a major step up in build quality and sound from the ?3?.  When compared to traditional headsets, the sound on the ER4XR is remarkable is size, soundstage, and clarity.  Thoroughly enjoyable, audiophiles caliber, and easily worn and taken with you on the go.

Do be aware that the earbuds do fit into your ear canal and the best sound is achieved when it properly seals into the canal.  This was somewhat uncomfortable at first and took a bit of experience to get used to.  After a bit, I no longer notice it and enjoy the amazing sound out of these earbuds.

Highly recommend - especially stepping up to the ER4XR over the other models in the lineup.

But as you can estimate from the shape, 
It won't fit you well if you have small ear.
Once it's fitted properly, you will be experiencing the most flat sound you can find among the earphones. 
If you are one of the person who loves fun sound, you might not like it

Perfect sound experience if you can fit

Used hf3 model years ago. This one beats it in every way. Great performance that makes it my favourite even compared to more expensive IEMs. Delivered quickly and without issues.

A cost-friendly answer to audio needs.

Etymotics have their reputation for a reason. The sound is first class, though it is tuned to be neutral and even the XR's have pretty restrained bass- not a problem, and arguably an asset, but something to be aware of. The only knocks against it are also part of the appeal: namely the fit and passive noise isolation, which depending on your use may make it hard to quickly take in / out or be aware of your surroundings. Worth the price, but the cheaper options in the line-up (the ER2's and ER3's) are quite competitive and might make more sense for some.)

Great clear sounding headphones that do a great job of noise cancelling. Although the insertion is similar to earplugs and might not be for everyone.

Fantastic IEM. Fit can be an issue. But once you’ve taken the time to find the proper tip for your ear canal, the result is well worth the effort.

A Fantastic Buy

The ER4XR are accurate with high definition sound quality. I suppose I’m a bass head, because the extended bass response wasn’t overdone, in fact I‘d be ok with a muddier bass response. But that’s not what these earbuds are about. They get very low, yes down to 20Hz which makes it seem like there’s a subwoofer in the room, but they do so precisely. The imaging is amazing. I played some “headphone test tracks” which make it seem like you have speakers all around and I literally initially looked around the room because I thought someone had turned on something in the room I was in. The soundstage is large. I listened to test tones through the audible frequency range and what I heard matches what’s specified. The fit is good. I was hoping to use them for zoom calls but the “noise cancelling” properties, make it hard for me talk and have these on at the same time. Lots of different earbud shapes and sizes provided and the optional filters/attenuators add even more customization options.

I have other etymotic, this one sounds the warmest and most soothing to me. I prefer it to other headphones.

Great

Great earphones for a slightly warmer than true neutral sound. They do have a deep insertion, but work better for me because of that - they stay more secure, and larger barrel earphones are uncomfortable. Plus the inherent sound isolation of this design is nice.

Great earphones

Excellent sound and response, especially for the price point.  Far superior to many of the popular brands that are more advertising than actual sonic quality.   A ridiculous number of fittings to ensure the fit is optimized for any ear canal.  The only hesitation would be the depth of ear bud may be uncomfortable for some,. especially with extended wear.  However, if you are after the best fit/sonic quality for the price, this is one of the best options.

Excellent Sonic Quality

I had old version of Er4p and a p-s cable. I thought they were great. But when I got my Er4xr, I liked them more than the previous model. Neutral and balanced sound, super clear.

Good build and sound quality. Forward mids, pleasant but not too much bass. Must fit them properly for best audio. I prefer the included foam tips.

Audiophile grade

WOW! These earphones hit the mark and with stunning replicative accuracy too. The deep insertion is probably my favorite part aside from that ridiculous accuracy. But those two things go hand-in-hand, so you come to enjoy the awkwardness anyways. Like a dog. A pavlovian dog ;-D I salivate sometimes when I think of these bad boys.

These were on sale for $130 so I feel it's worth it at that price. 4-star rating is assuming a $220ish-$350ish price. But for $130, 5-stars, easy.

Sound quality is excellent and sound blocking is better than Airpod Pros, but had to buy a replacement cable ($50) after a week of use. There was a loose connection inside the semi-flexible plastic piece. Might be because I wear them when I sleep, but still, I'm a bit surprised.

They're a bit uncomfortable to sleep with since they protrude a bit. But they are more comfortable to sleep with than AKG K712's for sure, and they don't run out of battery halfway through the night like Airpod Pros and wake me up with an unnecessarily loud low battery warning.

Recommend buying some benzoyl peroxide and one of those water bulbs for your ears. The bubbly sensation is so good.

Ive been a fan of etymotic in-ears for a while. Started with some ER4PT’s. These are like those but even better. Very neutral sounding with just a bit deeper and bigger bass. But nowhere overwhelming. Like good monitors with a perfectly balanced sub.

Great reference in-ears

Very transparent and linear response indeed! Amazing separation and soundstage for In-Ear. 
These are definitely at the monitor-grade level they claim to be at. 
Quite pleased, and the extended response model is totally the right way to go. It gives just enough low-end response for my taste.
