Bought this lens several years ago and twice, on major vacations, it failed, useless. Both times Nikon had service advisories for free repair but that doesn't help in the middle of a vacation. My $99 cell phone camera worked whilst my Nikon sat in the camera bag useless. A real disappointment in Nikon quality in recent years.

Fails every time you really need it

Was happy with the Len for about a year, now it's developed an error message! " Error Nikon Service Center" so I have gone back to the FT1 and am using my Nikon DX lens from now on!

Came as a package lens

Changed to other lenses past 6 months. Thin plastic piece of the mount broke off when I tried to change back, looks like metal but clearly isn't. No luck with customer service line or site. Getting a v3 for birthday, maybe not now.

Didn't last

This is a very useful lens....and pretty decent quality for a kit lens. Sharpness is quite good in the centre and 'ok' on the edges. Fast focus and a capable little performer.

I use this lens for its wide angle approach to images landscapes.

Clear and sharp images!!!

I like the size and feature of this lens. It's small and it even has VR. It has great zoom range going from full frame equivalent 27mm - 81mm range. As for image quality, it take decent pictures. I only use this lens when I need wide angle and out doors on a bright day. I now have 18.5mm f/1.8 lens which I love. If it did not come in a kit, I would have got the 10mm f/2.8 instead and 18.5mm f/1.8 plus 30-110mm vr zoom. Still, this lens can be had on used market for a steal of a price.

Beautiful and useful

Overall I like the Nikon 1 J1 system and have captured some great images on tour in Europe. However, after only 3 weeks of use the 10-30mm lens has developed a consistent "lens error" issue when the system is turned on by unlocking the lens, or if the camera is switched on with the lens already extended but with the zoom ring anywhere between 10mm and 14mm. The compact design seems great but it's just not rugged enough, apparently. Be aware that if your lens develops problems you are dead in the water until it gets serviced, as these are only sold with the kit. You can't purchase a separate back-up. I'll be using the larger DSLR for now.

Lens errors after 3 weeks of use

It came with the camera as part of the kit, so there wasn't a deliberation on my part to buy it. As a compact zoom it is quite easy to use.

For wide angle scenery and landscape I think the 10 mm pancake lens is a better choice, but in the mid to near telephoto range this lens is great.

Here is a table of maximum aperture vs focal length, as indicated on the camera display:

At all focal lengths the minimum aperture reads f/16.

I have been using the camera for taking product photographs to use in production of operators manuals and service notes and this lens is good for that application, since most of my products are big and well lit.

The close focus spec is 200 mm, but spot focus will allow closer focusing, from 68 mm to 100 mm, increasing with the focal length, The lens works much better if you stay at least 200 mm away from your subject. (For true close focus work I use a 55mm Micro-NIKKOR with the lens adapter.)

The lens is rather slow at those useful focal lengths around 20 to 30 mm, so I am hoping that Nikon will come out with some faster prime focus lenses at 30 and 20 mm. It is not really a great portrait lens for that reason. I will be trying the f/2.8 17-35 mm zoom soon to see how that works.

Quick and convenient

I got this 10-30 lens together with the 10 in the zoom-wide-angle Nikon 1 V1 kit. Despite the fact that, in general, I prefer prime lenses, I have to say that I like to 10-30 very much. It is sharp, delivers nice contrast and colors, and it is super compact, well built, the AF is silent and fast. And, of course, the VR works perfectly (with the firmware upgrade). It is especially its compactness which makes it such a pleasure to use. It is as small as a prime lens on a typical full format rangefinder body, but it brings in enhanced focal length flexibility. This lens fits perfectly to the N1 V1. I'd like to add another highly important aspect of the 1 Nikkor lenses: they are all consistent in terms of color reproduction, and the (stellar!) metering system of the N1 series bodies responds consistenly to all 1 Nikkor lenses. I think it's for the first time that Nikon got this right for a whole range of lenses. This aspect makes the 1 Nikkor lenses so much, much more convenient to use than other Nikkor lenses, as you don't have to learn the particularities of each new lens (go, for example, from the old 18-35 FX lens to the new 70-300 VR lens, you will have to learn anew how to expose the 70-300 correctly). And you only have to have one Picture Control setting for all 1 Nikkor lenses - again an aspect that simplifies end enhances the usability of the Nikon 1 system.
