Used Flashpoint MF12 Macro Flash OB

Perfect for macro pictures, and with the Flashpoint R2 Pro Mark II Transmitter controller, and the Flashpoint R2 TTL Receiver for my Canon Speedlites 580 EXII it integrates perfectly with my existing lighting equipment. Works actually better than the Canon 2-light macro, is way more budget friendly, and I can now add more MF12 units if I want to. This, and the use of a diffuser for macro are definitely the greatest improvements anyone can make to their macro photography work, except for the use of a good quality focusing rail, or bellows for macro focus stacking.

Perfect lighting!

Fun to use. The addition of the gels allows creative lighting otherwise not easily done with macro.

4 stars because the flashes themselves feel very flimsy and like if they drop they'll shatter. I get keeping weight down so to not weigh on the lens, but they just do not feel durable.

Excellent with one caveat

Have more control with the different lights and angles.

Macro lighting

This would be a 5 star review if the kit came with a 46mm ring.  I'm using the Olympus OMD ME1-3 camera body with both the 60mm and 30mm macro lenses, these lenses have a 46mm filter thread. I now have a 46 to 49mm step up ring on order.  I am really looking forward to using the MF12 in the near future.

Great kit for macro lighting. Love the carrying case, and colored gels that come with it. Can do a full day of macro shooting on a full charge. Love that you can add it subtract flash heads as needed.

Great macro lights

Works as expected lighting macros subjects. Wish the light could disperse a little better. Bugs? eyes show individual flashes. I?ll have to find an add-on. Would buy another if I needed it.

Good macro flash arrangement.

This is probably the best macro flash system on the market. But, as always, there?s give and take.

Probably the best macro flash system out there

Another good Flashpoint product. They work great with my existing triggers, and I like the size. The batteries charge pretty quickly; I thought I'd miss using batteries but they have a long runtime and one can charge from USB on the go so not a problem.

The lights have nice angling, and can put the light where you need it. But as with most ring flashes the diffusers don't really diffuse enough...a common problem since you need a bigger surface farther from the light source. There are various hacks to do this though, and it's always tough given the short working distances we have in macro. I'd like to see a dual cold shoe bracket just for these so we could mount them further away at times. Easy enough to build probably.

Also, the weight of the flash units sometimes causes the adapter to slide around. Most use a bit of gaffer's tape to prevent that; it should be fixed in the design. And if you use filters make sure they've got a lot of threads so the weight of the flashes can be borne at the end of your lens without issue.

But even without using them on the lens I find them useful, since they're so compact and adaptable. I like just throwing them in the pack for hiking for that reason, even if not on a macro shoot.

Just the right setup I have been looking for. I love macro photography and the MF-12 2 light kit is perfect. More power than I expected. I get the right light in the right spot every time.

I have not used it much yet to give it a great review. What I have done it works great and will definitely plan to use it for more macro photography.

Definitely recommend

Nice beginners ring flash kit that?s expandable, and versatile.  Kit includes 2 flash heads and all the step up rings you need to get started.  Don?t forget to order the controller for your brand of camera.  The kit is plenty to start out with some macro photography as well as being able to use the flash heads off the ring as stand alone units.  For the price, you can?t go wrong you?re only limited by your imagination.
