Canon's newest fixed length L-series lens, the EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM, incorporates the newest in Canon lens technology for spectacular sharpness and impressive performance at all settings. It features two high-precision, large-diameter aspherical lenses for sharpness across the sensor, even in peripheral areas of full-frame sensors. Lens elements have a newly-designed anti-reflective SWC (Sub Wavelength Coating) that departs from conventional coatings by using an extremely fine structure that minimizes ghosting and flaring across the lens surface, regardless of the angle with which light enters or exits. I bought 2 copies and both have auto-focus problems. My other L lenses have zero problems. The 24mm lens is definitely disappointing.

Auto Focus Flop

I got this as a hand-me-down from my buddy who just upgraded all his equipment. This lens is over 8 years, FOCUS is incredible, SHARPNESS is amazing, Super recommend this lens. Using it on a Canon R & R3.

Exactly what I thought it would be. I primarily use this and my 50mm lens when I go out to do shoots

My thoughts

This has tons of bokeh if you want it and with the mk IV auto focus sensitivity turned up it works wonderfully. 

Also, in a completely different application, it's amazing for model photography specifically full-body. Again, amazing bokeh and really clear images. Some distortion of you're close but that's to be expected with a 24mm.

Canon 24mm

I was hesitant to purchase this lens since it was released 10 years ago in 2008. I was worried that ten years of technological advancement would have rendered this obsolete, but I was pleasantly surprised. The f/1.4 produces beautiful bokeh in images and still obliterates the background when needed, even at 24mm. The close focus distance means that it is very versatile for many different kinds of photography; it can focus on things less than 1 foot away! The lens is very sharp at f/4 or above. Very minimal distortion for a 24mm. It has less distortion than the 24-70mm f/2.8L II. I use this to film in dark places like nightclubs and this thing is a beast. I love the low light capabilities. It’s been a week of owning this and it hasn’t left my camera.

My New Favorite Prime Lens!

This is a great lens!  For years I've relied heavily on various zoom lenses but I wanted to give a fixed one a try for my landscape photos.  The difference between 24mm on a zoom and this 24mm is noticeable and worth the expense.  I might add that it works quite well for close as well as for distant shots.

Welcome Addition to Lens Inventory

This lens is solid. Good weight and balance. It has a fast focus, even in low light. It is clear, sharp, bokeh is amazing. I use it for landscape and animal photography on my full frame camera. It allows you to really push your creative limits.
Yes, it is expensive. But I have no regrets. I'm sorry I didn't get it sooner.

Nice Prime Lens

This lens is perfect for indoor sessions, as well as outdoors! The wide angle isn’t too excessive that my images appear distorted, it’s just enough to display the landscape/setting of my sessions. Focuses quickly and with no issues, I love it!

A very nice lens

I bought this lense primarily to do indoor studio shoots for online sales. It is great for photographing all sizes of objects that I market. Usually things that are as small as a watch or as large as a guitar, etc. 

Also great for shooting things like boats and autos outdoors. 

I usually shoot under lights (no flash and off a tripod. Great detail and depth of field with very low ISO, small aperture, and long shutter speeds. Manual camera setting. Also use a remote shutter release. Wonderful lense if you know how to use your camera!

Works Great for My Application

Incredibly sharp this new L series lens. Just used in a project, always at 1.4. So beautiful, insanely sharp lens.

Incredibly sharp beautiful lens

As with others, I have also experienced issue with the auto focus. When I first received the lens, the image quality seemed reasonably sharp. Over a year later, the auto focus is leaving much to be desired. Watching as it attempts to focus, you can see that it often 'hesitates' and sometimes 'hunts' back and forth trying to achieve focus. This is true on a tripod and photographing a stationary object. Very disappointing...I'd expect it to be tack sharp...
 I returned the lens yesterday to Canon (3/5/2018), to attempt and see if it is a repair issue - problem with the USM, lenses, or something else.

Great looking lens, but focusing is an issue

Generally a good experience. I purchase yearly from them. There sales team must slow down the customer experience. Most customers exspect to be heard when spending money on big dollar items. I purchased the rest of my order through B&H.

I have been using a 24-70 2.8mm.  This gives me a little more sharpness corner to corner and having the extra stop does help in lower light situations.  A great addition to my gear.

A great addition to my prime lens choices

My copy had inconsistent focusing. I was getting front and back focusing and sometimes a hit. Attempts to correct the problem using fine focus adjustment failed so I returned the lens to canon. I then went to a local canon authorized store and tried another new copy straight from their inventory and I was surprised to encounter the same issue. I then tried the Sigma art 24mm f1.4 and did the same test in store testing out each focus points and I was surprised to find that the sigma 24mm art was spot on consistent hitting focus each time and sharper than the canon L lens. I was sold. I just purchased the Canon 85mm f1.2 last week and this lens is super tack sharp even at 1.2 and always hits focus. I was disappointed with the 24mm f1.2 being a very expensive glass. I had higher expectations with these L lens.

Great built terrible focusing

I bought this lens second hand, 2 years old but in excellent condition. I found the focusing to work correctly the majority if the time. I mean majority of the time when you go in and pixel peep at 100%. Large aperture f1.4 lenses will not have 100% accuracy in real life shooting. Not sure if all reviewers take this into account but this is a technical challenge I have found with large aperture lenses, even my 85mm f1.8 which is one of the fastest and most reliable lenses I have used on full frame. Just needed to make this point clear.

I find color rendition and contrast to be fantastic. Sharpness across the frame is so good that I do not need lens optimisation in post processing. This lens does not need it, when my 24-105mm f4L often does. Bokeh is also very nice, for a non-dedicated portrait lens. I think this lens is worth the money, despite the high price tag.

Very good lens

I understand that it is impossible to eleminate distortions with such a fast lens but I was dissappointed when I looked at the details of my exposure. Use a lens hood this guy is notorious for flaring. Other than that it's fast and sharp I used it heavily for landscapes in the desert.

A bit more Chroma distortion than I would hope

This lens has served me well in small spaces for 3/4 and full-body portraits. It has allowed also for effective use of shalllow depth of field as a compositional element. Whether with natural light or strobes, this lens has not presented any sort of limitation in terms of framing or of photographic composition generally.

With wide-angle lenses, certain distortion is not unexpected--particularly at closer distances to one's subject--but it is also not an issue if, for example, one shoots RAW and makes appropriate corrections in post-processing. As shooting with this lens may not be necessarily a "point and shoot" undertaking, skill sets
may have bearing on individual results.

I find the 24mm f/1.4 II USM to be a tremendous lens, and I cannot imagine not having it in my kit.

A small space workhorse

Glad I purchased it

I purchased this lens specifically for photography large products in my studio, mainly oriental rugs. This lens was to replace my Canon 16-35mm L series. The definition right to edges and the corners is outstanding and within a few minutes told me that I had made the right decision. As usual, you can always rely on Canon L series

great lens

I like this lens very much.  I will be using it for group shots and for landscapes.  Focus is good, and low light capabilities are great.  Lens is heavier than I would have thought but still within reason.

THIS IS A VERY GOOD LENS, BUT EXPENSIVE

I wasn't sure about purchasing this lens at first due to the steep price tag but am really glad now that I did. This lens can be described in one word, Quality. Exceptional quality throughout the optics, build, design and AF to be more specific. The color of this lens is the best I've seen in any lens. The contrast and clarity is super deep and nicely defined. The sharpness is very well kept fully open and, when stopped to 4, is perfect. The light fall-off is pretty hard fully open but obviously your camera/PS can correct that pretty well and mostly goes away when stopped down a decent amount. The distortion is very minimal and easily corrected also. The build quality I absolutely love, very solid metal body, weather sealing and just good all-round feel. I dropped it onto a very hard floor from about 2.5 feet and it still works fine (obviously an accident). I wish the lens hood was metal though, but what are you gonna do. If you want a lens in this length and are debating the price, just go for it, you'll be happy.

A super rad lens

I purchased this lens for two major purposes: food photography and general low light use (aquariums, restaurants, caves, indoors).  The very close 3 inch minimum focus distance combined with the effective 38mm on a 1.6 crop factor body make this lens great for close up subjects in low light situations.  

Food pictures have great detail and the entire subject can be captured easily.  I pair this with my 60mm macro lense.  

Aquarium pictures come out nicely and the 24L's f1.4 is a significant advantage over any f2.8 lens.  The 3" minimum focus distance is a must for most aquarium subjects.

I've also captured great images strolling around town and in gardens.

No complaints on image quality or focus issues.  Construction is obviously solid.

Cons: 

The bokeh isn't as good as you will get with a longer focal length.

You'll often have the urge to get closer to your subjects if you use this as a general purpose lens.    Objects get smaller looking through this lens. It takes some getting used to until you realize how to use this focal length.

After using the 24L I know I made the right choice for my uses.

Fine Lens

I bought the lens for its build quality. I hope to use this lens as a "stuck on" for my 1D X. It is actually one of the very few Canon lenses that are small and weather-sealed (14L, 24L, and 50L). I like the 24mm focal length because it is wide enough to cover generally what you see. However, subjects don't get strong perspective distortion off center. Auto-focus is not very reliable when set to f1.4 and it's about the same on the two cameras that I have (1D and 5D). Since auto-focus varies a little from shot to shot at f1.4, you may consider using continuous burst mode to make sure getting at least one that is in focus. Contrary to some people's belief, the out barrel of this lens is mostly plastic. Only the filter thread is metal, which I think is good, because filters don't get stuck on the lens and can be removed easily by hand.

Good, but certainly not perfect

For this price, I would expect a much better lens.
Sharpness is very poor at the frame corners, unless you stop down to at least f/2,8.
Vignetting is as visible as in much cheaper and older lenses.
Built quality is excellent and distortion is very well controlled, but that's not enough to justify this price.
At present, the 24/2,8 IS is probably a better purchase for most people.
