Your “backup” lens should be as good as a primary lens, but also ready to handle anything, from a live event to the quick shots any photographer might need in a jiffy. The SONY 35MM F/1.8 OSS E MOUNT LENS fits the bill as a “renaissance lens,” in a manner of speaking, thanks to versatility and a ton of features:

Product Highlights
  • Compact and lightweight, as any good “second lens” should be, but not without sacrificing performance, thanks to a F1.8 aperture and 35mm equivalency focal length of 52.5mm.
  • The autofocus is beautiful, of course, and what else do you expect from Sony? But even better is the fact that you can switch to manual focus with the Sony 35mm and hold every picture to your professional standards.
  • Subtle background blurring is a must-have for many occasions, from wedding receptions to portraits. The round aperture of the Sony 35mm delivers a stunning background blur that doesn’t distract from the frame.

Add the Sony 35mm to your toolbox of lenses and you’ll never feel unprepared for a gig again.

Learn about the SONY 35MM F/1.8 OSS E MOUNT LENS

It’s on. The wedding reception is in full swing, people are having the first of their many drinks, and the DJ just played one of those Top-40 songs that means the party is ready to go all night. And where are you, the amateur or even the professional photographer? Worried about finding a lens. We here at Adorama don’t want you panicking and driving home to find another lens; we want you to arm yourself with the perfect “second lens,” capable of being carried around to any gig when you need to capture the action. But don’t think of the SONY 35MM F/1.8 OSS E MOUNT LENS as a mere backup—no. It’s versatile and powerful enough to serve as a second lens when your first simply won’t suffice. So have a glass of champagne and sit down with us as we discuss all the use you can get out of your Sony 35mm lens.

  • Aperture, aperture, aperture. In real estate, it might be “location, location, location,” but in photography, there are few things more important than aperture. A good aperture allows you to grab plenty of light, constructing beautiful shots even in low-lighting situations. The night shots with the Sony 35mm are of stunning quality, which means that even if your next gig is in a dimly-lit ballroom, you’ll still be able to take all of the beautiful images that are quite literally dancing all around you.
  • Multipurpose is an apt word for the Sony 35mm, thanks to its focal length of 52.5mm(35mm equivalency), making it appropriate for an entire range of shots, from portraits and night shots to quick snapshots of the bridal party. You wondered why we call this lens versatile? Because the Sony 35mm is capable of acting as your emergency lens no matter what your primary lens was accomplishing.
  • Crisp, clean images. You might have the Optical SteadyShot image stabilization to thank for that, as well as the F1.8 aperture, but you’d be surprised at just how crisp images turn out even after we told you all about these features. Why? Because the Sony 35mm is nothing if not an overachiever, providing you with crisp and professional photos, even when you’re in a pinch.
  • Smooth and silent autofocus is a must-have for any lens, and this e-Mount lens f/1.8 is no different. No different in the sense that it provides the quiet, effective autofocus you’ve come to expect from Sony lenses—and if you’re working a live event, you can’t have your autofocus getting in the way of beautiful moments.
  • Background blur. Is there any effect better than the background blur? An effective background blur gives a lot of contrast to your subjects in the foreground, not robbing from the image but instead enhancing it until it’s something fresh and exciting—and far more professional than any amateur point-and-shoot can hope to imitate. The Sony 35mm achieves this background blur in spectacular fashion thanks to the—what else?—aperture, which is circular and designed precisely for these kinds of shots.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more versatile, able lens here at Adorama than the SONY 35MM F/1.8 OSS E MOUNT LENS. Which is to say: why keep looking?

Most Liked Positive Review

A Lifesaver

Though I am seventy-two years old, I have had a problem of shaky hands most of my life. The 30mm f2.8 Sigma I used on my NEX-7 just doesn't do the job that the Sony 35mm f1.8 does, especially for low and available light. I have a Voigtlander that does a good job but is totally manual and is not as suitable for rapid shots. I love the Sony 35mm f1.8.

Nice lens for nex camera

from New Mexico  -  Semi-pro Photographer

Good normal range lens; Acceptably sharp; OSS works well; good low light lens.

Great IQ, but ringing sound

from Carsonville, PA  -  Getting Started

Lens produces a high-pitched ringing sound occasionally, usually at low ISO and when the shutter button is half-pressed. I may return it. Sometimes it operates without sound, sometimes it rings loudly. The image quality and the focus for slow moving subjects is generally excellent. The ringing is just an annoyance, but may indicate a problem. Would be bad for video if recording sound, but I don't do that much. I have heard that this is not normal performance, so I may return it.

fast for low-light - but sharper?

from Richmond, CA  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

This lens has much improved performance for low light situations, as expected with a "fast" lens - when compared to the 18-55 mm NEX kit lens. I love that this lens is black - looks much better than the silver kit lens does mounted on my NEX-5N. But as for the advertized increased sharpness of this lens, I'm just not seeing it so far: when I compare shots of the same scene/same settings taken with this lens vs. the kit lens, pixel peep both images at full size - they both seem identical in sharpness. At the price this lens sells for, it should produce images with noticeably better sharpness than the kit lens.

Great Lens on the NEX-7

from Tucson, AZ  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

A great complement to the NEX-7 making it a wonderful available light camera.

Excellent lens

from Philadelphia, PA  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

I wanted a lens that I could use in Low light and which did not have as wide a view as the 16mm one. I can use this for most purposes except for photographing birds for which I use the 50-210mm lens.

Everything I'd hoped.

from Currently in Benson, AZ  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

I had wanted a nice walk-around lens- something like the 50mm everyone had on their 35mm cameras in the '70s. I tried the 30/3.5 E-mount but was disappointed with the f/stop limitations. So the 35/1.8 sounded just like something I'd find useful. So far that's exactly the case: it's lightweight, the black finish is more subtle, and the f/1.8 max aperture is just what I'd needed. The big surprise has been the focus speed. Way faster than the other earlier E-mount lenses I have. It still has the same issue as all AF systems in that it doesn't always agree with me about where I want it to focus, but then I've come to accept that's just the way it is with contrast detect AF. A little tweak with DMF and I'm good to go. I had thought Sony was going to build all NEX cameras and accessories in Thailand, but the SEL35F18 lens is from China. Looks like it's going to set the bar for E-mounts that follow.
