Perfect for what I need. This is a replacement flash since I dropped my other one on the hardwood floor. Expensive lesson. This can act as a main, master or remote. I use the IR mode since that is what my smaller flashes use.

Looking to expand my flash options. Needed another lighting source and the final choice came down to the Nikon SB-5000 Speedlight. Performs as advertised. No trouble syncing it with my other Speedlight and firing it remotely.

I love this flash. Great fan to keep it from overheating. The power to bounce off of 2 to 2.5 story high ceilings. Will miss it when it's gone!!!

I recently upgraded my gear by buying the Z9 and then decided I needed to go all the way and get a good flash so I ordered this one. Man is it amazing. I have no regrets spending the money.

Very versatile speed light and the wireless feature using the WR-R11b on the Z6II makes it easy to control all 3 speed lights at shoots...although the light output is so consistent, it is normally only used after the test flash.

This flash is powerful and has the typical Nikon quality build. BUT: This flash has a completely different user interface than any of my other 4 Nikon flashes. My SB 910 works fine but after using the SB-5000 I have to get out the book to remember how to set it. My two SB-700 flashes have another unfamiliar screen and button setup. All told, there should be one user interface just like all Nikon cameras have. When you put your hand on a Nikon camera, you know it. Try that with a SB-700, then grab the SB-5000. Nothing is the same. Completely unfamiliar. What are these buttons? Get out the book. FAIL.

I replaced my 900's and 910's with a couple of these. Recycle is a bit faster than the SB-900 and 910. The menu display looks about the same when viewing in daylight but not any better at night. Really wish Nikon would brighten up the menu display for night time viewing and add a higher resolution display. Navigation on this flash is different than my other flashes and in most cases easier to get around on. There is a bit of a learning curve if you are upgrading from an earlier flash so make sure to practice before you head out on a shoot. You'll want to use Eneloop or equivalent batteries to get the best results. Typical rechargeable batteries are not the same as Eneloop's. I don't recommend Alkaline batteries if you need a fast recycle time. Lithium batteries will work great but cost way more than I want to pay and the way I shoot don't give me any better results than the Eneloops.

I was tired of dealing with 3rd party triggers with my SB-910’s and D850. I finally replaced the SB-910’s with three SB-5000’s and a Nikon radio set. I wish I had made the switch years ago.

This does everything a wedding pro could ask from it. It’s best to use an external battery pack to keep from overheating especially in fast moving situation like 12 bridesmaids and bride walking down the aisle. Big problem is only the Nikon SD-9 will work with it so if you have another external battery pack like the good or flashpoint 960 beware they don’t work. Real world experience.

In looking at the specs online, and reading through the users manual it seems that one can do a lot with this admittedly expensive flash. Given the cost, and reviews expressing concerns about the wireless features not working, I made sure to download and read the users manual. AND there it was: "Compatible camera, the Wireless Remote Controller WR-R10 and the WR adapter WR-A10 (both optional) are required for wireless multiple flash-unit photography using radio control. If I was rating just the Nikon SB5000 flash unit, I would have given a rating of five stars. However, the addition of the diffuser hood and the batteries did not enhance the package any. The hood is very flimsy with velcro holding the translucent front to the sides. The elastic cuff used to hold the diffuser to the flash unit is stiff without any adjustment straps. The batteries are not anything special. Back to the SB5000, it is a great flash unit that pairs nicely with my Nikon Z7. It can control other flash units using optical or wireless connections. It has a zoom flash that mirrors the zoom setting from the camera.

When I purchased this flash, it was for use with my D810. I wanted to have the best flash available, with the greatest reach. I understood that the radio capability would not function with the D810. This was frustrating, but I knew it going in. The flash has served me well. I have been very happy using it with my D810. My wife bought me a Z6 for Christmas, and it WILL function with the radio capability of this flash. I look forward to purchasing the necessary equipment to allow it to function over RF. I always want to use my equipment to its maximum utility, but, honestly, I may never get there with this wonderful flash. It has served me well on camera, and as a slave to my SB 700. I'm pleased that now I have that functional capability, but I've been pretty happy with this flash without using its radio capability. It has worked well on my D810, and, although it dwarfs the Z6, it works like a charm on it as well. This is a great flash, and it is nice to know it has the radio capability if I ever decide to make use of it.

I absolutely love this flash. I initially rented it from www.lensrentals.com for an event and was very pleased with its performance. I knew I'd purchase one and was quite pleased when I finally received my package from Adorama.

Excellent product but expensive. Wanted to start learning flash photography so wanted a device that’s made as the same manufacturer as the camera. Product exceeded my expectations.

Upgrading from the old speed light to this one did not make much sense at first because I haven’t done a lot of flash photography. At least not in the digital age. Taking the leap, it is definitely worth it. The extended capabilities are great in the macro photography realm. Especially offsetting and off camera capabilities when using macro giant passionflowers the size of your hand...

I am a Nikon shooter. I have owned and used the following Nikon speedlights: SB800, SB900, SB910 and now the SB5000. The 900 had SEVER overheating issues and I am happy with the 910 I wanted another light so I bought the 5000. I have returned it twice. First time the screen locked. Second time because it was going through batteries after 100 flashes. It's another ($) to use the radio frequency and frankly not worth the cost. I use it now as a spare flash when it should be my primary one.

Great Flash
By MikeH
I used this flash to shoot a wedding, and it was fantastic with my D810. I used it for bounce flash, pushing it with full power shots and fairly quick sequences, and the new fan worked as advertised--no overheating. And the exposures were right on the money. I like the fact that it's smaller and lighter than the SB-900/910, and that you can connect it to an external battery. Now I'm hoping that Nikon finds a way to make the radio controls work with my D810!
Great Flash but somewhat misrepresented in the beginning.
By ProPhotographer
This flash has been some what misrepresented by Nikon in the beginning. It was claimed to be a Radio controlled flash but in order to get radio control to work I was told I must purchase a WR-R10 radio and a WR-A10 adapter. This is what I was told when I called Nikon Professional Services when I could not get it to work with my D800 and D810 cameras. Yes I told them which cameras I had and was trying to get it working on. After purchasing the WR-A10 adapter and finding out that I must send th...

Under the umbrella of Nikon's innovative technology, the SB-5000 AF Speedlight stands as a testament to advanced wireless lighting solutions. This groundbreaking flash unit operates via radio frequency, eliminating the need for a direct line of sight and offering an impressive range of up to approximately 98 feet (30 meters). This feature provides photographers with the flexibility to position lights in separate rooms, around corners, and to work seamlessly in bright ambient light with maximum efficiency.
When used in conjunction with the WR-R10 and either the D5 or D500, the SB-5000 Speedlight can control up to six groups (A-F) or 18 Speedlights, paving the way for truly advanced wireless lighting. Furthermore, it supports Advanced Wireless Lighting using either radio-controlled (up to three groups) or optical-controlled units (up to three groups). This is achievable by attaching a conventional, optical-control Nikon Speedlight or the SU-800 Commander (as a master or commander unit) and a WR-R10 (as a commander) onto the D5.
The SB-5000 Speedlight also boasts a compact design, integrated with its own internal cooling system. This unique feature prevents the flash panel from overheating due to consecutive firings. As a result, the SB-5000 can fire consecutively for longer durations than conventional models, without requiring flash cool-down time between bursts. It can fire up to 120 continuous shots at 5-second intervals.
The controls on the SB-5000 Speedlight have been streamlined and refined for user convenience. An "i" button has been added for quick access to frequently used settings. The design also incorporates versatile bounce ability, with the flash head capable of tilting down to -7 degrees or up to 90 degrees, and rotating horizontally 180 degrees to the left and right. This Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight is a powerful tool for photographers seeking to elevate their lighting game.
