I really like the lens.i did a test at 70mm from 5 feet away and from the same 5 feet I zoomed to 300 mm in the macro mode.images turned out sharp both at 70 and 300.this lens is very compact for 300mm and will fit in your camera bag. for $ its a great lens.

Purchased this 70-300 a week before taking a trip to St. Maarten for 7 days to photograph aircraft landing over the beach. This lens is very light to handle and carry. I found it quick and easy to focus on AF, sensitive to use on Manual Focus. Large passenger jets are very quick movers when moving very low prior to "touchdown." Used this lens 4 of the 7 days. I have two more trips this month (photojournalist shooting) and I will be packing this lens along with two of my "L" series lenses for further comparison. So far I will rate this lens 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a decent lens and results are good. Not very sharp at the end of the zoom

I bought this lens for travel purposes. It perfectly fits my requirements for travel. Light, long zoom, great quality - lens is made in Japan. In comparison with original Canon L lenses this lens is much lighter and its easy to carry around. This lens has very good quality glass so you won't be disappointed. I'm using it on Canon 5D Mark III. AF is fast. It isn't PRO lens however it can be used at PRO level also.

For a 70-300 I think its a great cheap lens. I like that it is EF and has macro. However it is loud and slow, and you are better off focusing yourself. Macro mode is not really macro mode, but you can get some nice close ups from a few few away. Next to my 55-250 STM I use it when I need it on a full frame, but if I am on a crop I use the 55-250. Its faster and quite.

I received this lens today and was anxious to put it through its paces so I went and shot everything from horses both close up and out in pasture, deer, planes flying overhead, hawks flying around, buffalo , shots down a river from bridge as well as closeups of flowers . This lens performed excellently and produced clear sharp photos of all above mentioned. If the operator does their job this lens is more than capable of doing it's job in decent light not a super fast lens so do not expect it to perform like one. I would be happy with this lens at 2 to 3 times the cost so I feel it is a real bargain and it feels pretty well made i love my other sigma lenses and think I will love this one as well!

I purchased this lens and received today, with weather forecast for next week not looking good I wanted to put it through a wide variety of shots.. I took pictures of horses both close up and out in pasture, airplanes flying overhead, hawk flying, deer, flowers macro, as well as shots downstream from a bridge ... All turned out excellent and tack sharp. I am 100% satisfied with this lens as well as my other Sigma and am amazed at how well built and responsive this lens is ... As long as you do your job this lens will definately do its!! Buy it and enjoy it ... Oh and let me say ADORAMA ROCKS!!!!

I mainly use this to shoot local birds and small critters with the use of the macro/telephoto function. This lens is very sharp. It's actually sharper than my kit 18-55mm lens that came on my D3100. The lens is a little soft at 4-5.6, but gets really sharp at f8. The lens has some weight to it and it feels pretty solid. The macro function works between 200-300mm and still produces sharp results! I am extremely happy with this lens. So sharpness, contrast, and its macro function are all positive. It's a very good lens. Now, the only thing that I am not too fond of is the focusing time. If you're using auto focus, the motor takes awhile to focus, but it gets the job done. The motor itself is a little loud. Other than that, it's a really good lens for its price and I highly recommend it to others looking for a great telephoto/macro lens at a bargain price.

Professional photographer taking flora and fauna. Sometimes use with a 1-4 teleconverter and lens works well in AF with it

This is fantastic value for an entry level zoom lens. I use it on my Nikon D3100. Yes, the auto focus is a little slow, and it is a bit noisy however I can not be happier with this purchase. I wanted a telephoto lense, since I only have the 18-55mm kit lens the D3100 came with. After reading review after review, I pulled the trigger on this one, and happy that I did.

This Sigma lens is well built and feel solid. I am impressed by its quality considering the price I paid for it. The auto-focus is noisy and slow, but it gets the job done. Macro is down to 1:2 @300mm, very useful for taking macro pix of flowers, gritters and pets. You have a 3+ feet working distance. With the 9-blade diaphragm aperture construction, it makes a fine portrait lens with pleasing Bokeh. However, I would not recommend it for Sports or Hyperactive kids.

Good Quality Lens for the price. I liked the Macro feature and it does do what is promised. It is not a lens to replace your Macro lens but can come handy if you are not carrying one. I used it on my Sony A77 and it did a decent job. The images are sharp. There are no soft edges. Lens quality isn't bad either. There are two versions of this lens. DG APO Macro and DG Macro. Get the APO version which is like $50 more at the time of this review.

It is a good lens that fit my budget. I put together a low end Canon SLR kit with a 50D and I felt this lens is more than sufficient for my photographic abilities. The lens is light weight, easy to attach and looks good on the camera. I tried a few macro shots and they came out really well. The same night, I tried to shoot the full moon. I have to say I am half-happy with the output. Lot of noise in low light. I put the lens to full use during a trip a San Diego zoo and got some stunning results from close-up shots of the animals. Again, everything is good except with little more noise than I expected. I will use this till a find a comparable lens in this price range or till I upgrade to a 5D and appropriate lens. Right now, I feel this is the best among the ones out there.

I recently used this lens while on vacation. It is very versatile as I photographed a variety of subjects (lighthouses, covered bridges, butterflies, flowers, birds . . .) My husband and I both can share this lens since we both have cameras that it will fit. Having lots of photography fun using this product!

Overall the lens functions well and produces good images, along with having the wonderful extra feature of a macro setting. The only limitations are that it can be difficult to focus accurately in low light or, in the macro setting, sometimes to even get the auto focus to find the focus point when there are multiple objects close together but at differing distances.

This was a gift that I wanted. I'm please with this lens. Does what I want it to do. I do a lot of outdoor photography and this does the job. I have a Nikon D5000 and I would recommend this lens to other Nikon D5000 users who don't have enough money for the Nikon version. I have three spare batteries because this lens does drain batteries.

Got this for a secondary lens for my wife after a field mishap with her old one. Very poor performance. Slow focus soft images. Not good for any kind of action. Would probably be ok for stationary shots. Ended up getting a Canon lens.

I still need a lot of work with my photography skills, but when I used my Sigma it shot the shots that I wanted. Of course, I would have to stand far away if I wanted shot of something that was really close to me. I basically use it for going to new places with nice scenery. It's good for how much you pay for it. Don't expect a lot from it, but don't expect too little. It's a good overall lens. But, it can get a little tricky putting it back onto the camera and it can get heavy, but what telephoto lens isn't? When in autofocus it is quite noisy, but I kind of like that. You can just switch it to manual focus and it will be quiet.

I got this lens for its reach (upgrading from the Nikon 55-200 non-vr kit lens) to track the kids at the park, wildlife, air-shows, etc. I am very pleased with how easy it is to get a good outdoor shot using this lens while hand-holding. The lens is very soft when wide open at all zooms so I have only utilized it in bright outdoor situations. F8 is the sharpness sweet spot while minimizing vignetting. The lens is also an ok Macro lens. I'm used to getting up on macro subjects and this lens allows me to be 6' away and still get the shot if I have it on a tripod. At 6', regardless of shutter speed, a macro picture will look funny because of the camera shake. The focus is loud but very accurate in bright daylight. I have used the lens for multiple air shows and found that it is useful but I do often end up with a blurred aircraft because of the slow F-stop. Color and contrast are accurate for the most part, I don't have to do a lot of post processing. Out of every 50 shots with this lens I usually lose 15 due to the restrictions of the lens. Out of the 50 I get maybe 5 quality prints. Not bad for the price but I am considering replacing it soon with a lens with VR or OS, depending on brand. This is a great daylight lens but you will find that it doesn't do anything else as good.

for the money the lens is very worth it. Im not a professional photographer so i just needed a lens with a decent amount of zoom and bingo just what the doctor called for, this lens is getting me some pretty decent pictures so far but I have only had it a month. So i havent really uncovered its potential. Its true the auto-focus hunts in low light but seems to me that a lot of lenses would with this focal range. All in All this is a great lens

Used this lens for one season. It was pretty good but suddenly the autofocus failed. Sounds like gears ratching inside but not driving the focus.

Good contruction. Doesn't feel like plastic, more like a super fine sandpaper. focus motor is loud and optical quality is on par with what you pay. No image stabilizer. Comes with a large lens hood, a great case, and warranty info. Thread size is 58mm so it's a great addition to those with 18-55 and are looking for a little more reach.

Got this as a replacement for one that my wife dropped when we were on assignment. It works fine for what was expected. However it is not as sharp as I would like. It is low end and we primarily use it with our secondary camera when we are in places where we do not want to risk damage to our other equipment.

"Biggest Bang For The Buck"...Great Lens

I use this great lens with my Nikon D90 for wildlife, portraits, sports/action and all outdoor action. An excellent and versatile lens and a real bargain for the price;...a poor-man's telephoto / semi-macro. Strongly recommend for the non-professional enthusiast. Focus is a bit soft at 300mm, but, for the price, it's exceptionally outstanding! Good job Sigma!
Telephoto zoom lense with tele-macro function and Optimized for digital SLR cameras
The performance telephoto zoom lens is capable of shooting with a maximum magnification of 1:2 at the focal length of 300 mm. It's the ideal lens for portraits, sports photography, nature photography, and other types of photography that frequently use the telephoto range.
SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass
This lens has two SLD glass elements in the front lens group and one in the rear lens group, the lens has excellent correction of chromatic aberration through the entire zoom range. This new DG lens is capable of macro photography with a 1:2 maximum magnification at the focal length of 300 mm. The new multi layer lens coating reduces flare and ghost, which is a common problem with digital cameras and also creates an optimum colour balance
Macro shooting with maximum magnification 1:2
High optical performance is demonstrated throughout the entire zoom range. It also has a switch that converts the lens to macro photography at focal lengths between 200mm and 300mm with a minimum focusing distance of 95cm (37.4 inches). In normal mode the minimum focusing distance is 150cm (59.1 inches) at all zoom settings. Maximum magnification between 200mm and 300mm is 1:2.9 to 1:2.
