The virtues of the PMW-F5 camera system are many, enabling the use of high quality production tools available today as well as those planned for the future:
1. The PMW-F5 camera system records 1080P imaging using on-board 50Mb MPEG2 HD and the 10bit XAVC HD. It can even record the two simultaneously, and to the same card!
2. In July 2013, 10bit 4:4:4/4:2:2 SR FILE recording capability is planned to be added.
3. In September 2013, XAVC HFR HD at 120P and XAVC 60P 2K (2048 x 1080) are planned to be added to the camera's arsenal.
All of these updates will be software based and will be free of charge to purchasers of the PMW-5 camera system.
The Sony PMW-F5 camera is designed to accept a wide range of lenses. These packages include a Sony supplied PL adapter and an Optitek EF lens mount adapter. The Sony PL mount features both the Arri LDS and Cooke "i" interface capability. The Optitek EF lens adapter provides fine Aperture control in 1/4 stop increments. Unlike DSLR based systems, the PMW-F5 is not locked into a particular lens mount or brand. The two adapters will allow interchangeable use of lenses from ZEISS, Arri, Cooke and many others.
Setting the F5 apart from cameras in its price bracket is the PMW-F5's ability to utilize the AXS-R5 memory recorder (sold separately) to record 4K or 2K 16bit RAW images. RAW images offer incredible image fidelity and post production possibilities in a non-destructive environment. With the option al AXS-R5 RAW recorder and a planned September upgrade, high frame rates of 120 fps at 2K can be achieved while retaining the exceptional, 16-bit image quality. 120FPS is created without windowing the imager (changing the angle of view).
The Sony F5 is designed to make economic sense today, with the features you'll need to continue generating value for years to come. Instead of locking you into a single recording system, the camera opens the door to unprecedented versatility. Get on board!
