The Sony BURANO combines the flagship-level cinema image quality of Sony’s VENICE lineup in a much more compact and portable camera body that still retains its Netflix-approved status. At the heart of the BURANO is an 8.6K full-frame sensor that delivers over 16 stops of dynamic range and supports internal RAW recording. An electronic variable ND filter ensures perfect exposures in variable lighting conditions, improved AI-assisted autofocus keeps the subject in focus at all times, and in-body image stabilization all combine to make this an excellent choice of camera for solo productions or teams that value size and run-and-gun filmmaking without compromising image quality.
Sony uses a 41.9 MP, 8.6K full-frame Exmor RS CMOS sensor derived from Sony’s flagship VENICE platform. This sensor offers outstanding detail, accurate color reproduction, and top-tier flexibility for cropping, effects, and high-end workflows. This sensor captures over 16 stops of dynamic range to help preserve highlights and shadows in difficult lighting, and, when combined with Sony’s S-Gamut3 and S-Log3 color science, users maintain maximum flexibility in their post-processing workflows. An improved IR cut filter pairs well with this impressive sensor to reduce a reddish tinge in dark areas under direct sunlight, which has been an area that sensors have struggled with in the past and is now improved with the BURANO.

For users who demand the highest resolution, the BURANO can capture 8.6K footage at up to 30 frames per second. 6K60p, Super35 5.8K60p, and Super35 4K120p is also available for slow-motion capture. Regardless of the project, the BURANO offers all the recording options to fit the bill and is incredibly versatile across numerous projects with different needs. A built-in anamorphic de-squeeze function offers 1.3x, 1.5x, 1.8x, and 2.0x de-squeeze to allow viewing of anamorphic images in 1080p video on both the camera’s LCD monitor and any supported external monitor.

While many cinema cameras require external recorders for RAW capture, the BURANO can record Sony’s 16-bit X-OCN LT format internally. This format offers the flexibility we are used to seeing in RAW while keeping file sizes more manageable for professional productions. XAVC H-I and XAVC H-L formats are also available with 10-bit color for pro teams that prefer a more traditional workflow. For users looking to produce footage with preset creative looks in-camera, numerous different tones such as Cool, Warm, Teal & Orange, Vintage, and s709 Kodak 2383/s709(800) tones are also built into the BURANO.

Instead of carrying around a bag full of ND filters, Sony has opted to include a 2-7-stop internal electronic ND filter. Users can quickly and easily adjust exposure across the full range on the go, making this feature invaluable for any team that needs on-the-go capabilities without carrying extra equipment.

The Sony BURANO is the world’s first digital cinema camera to support both Sony E-mount and PL-mount lenses in a single compact body. For users already in the Sony ecosystem, this means access to the lenses you already own and quick swapping between E-mount lenses and premium cinema PL lenses.

Unlike most other cinema cameras that rely on shoulder rigs, gimbals, or other external stabilizing systems, the BURANO features a 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization system with both E-mount and PL-mount lenses. This increases the versatility of the BURANO and makes high-end capture even more practical on the go and on solo productions.

A 627-point phase-detection autofocus system utilizes AI-assisted subject recognition to deliver lightning-fast, extremely accurate autofocus performance. The BURANO reliably detects and tracks human subjects with accuracy and speed even during complex camera movements or in busy scenes. This gives the BURANO an autofocus performance that is matched by very few high-end cinema cameras and ensures tack-sharp focus at all times.

If you’ve been considering one of Sony’s VENICE cameras but want a much smaller version, the BURANO is substantially smaller while retaining many of the top professional features found in Sony’s flagship cinema camera lineup. Weighing 6.4 pounds (2.9kg), the magnesium alloy chassis incorporates multiple mounting points, integrated cooling for unlimited capture, and a highly versatile modular design that allows users to quickly switch between handheld, shoulder-mounted, tripod, drone, crane, or gimbal configurations. The BURANO comes equipped with all the connections you’d expect from a high-end cinema camera, including 12G-SDI, HDMI, dual XLR audio inputs, Genlock, Timecode, Ethernet, USB-C, dual CFexpress Type B card slots, and an additional SD card slot.

A detachable VF/LCD combo functions both as the viewfinder and as a touchscreen for the BURANO. A Home button on the touchscreen brings up the same 'big six' controls (FPS, EI, Shutter, ND, Look, and WB) that VENICE users already know, now consolidated into one on-screen menu instead of VENICE's separate dedicated display. The LCD monitor is 3.5 inches in size and features a 2.76m dot display. Unlike the Sony VENICE series, the BURANO does not use a built-in OLED EVF and instead uses an optical loupe that attaches to the 3.5" LCD.
