Why do I need a lens cap?

Scratching an expensive piece of glass is every photographer's worst nightmare. Thank goodness for lens caps, those invaluable little tools that protect one of a photographer’s most expensive investments. Check lens cap size before you buy

Lens caps come in a variety of sizes in order to fit every lens diameter. Before you make a purchase, double check your lens size to make sure you choose a cap that fits. Hard lens caps must match the diameter exactly, while some rubber lens caps can fit a variety of lenses within a certain range.

Material matters in more ways than one

Hard plastic lens caps are the most common cap type for a reason. They fit the lens exactly and protect the lens from scratches and impact damage. They stay on the lens through compression, which is effective but can wear out in rare cases. Rubber lens caps can fit a wide variety of lenses and protect from scratches, but they aren’t as effective at protecting from impacts like fall damage.

These caps are almost always made of hard, damage-resistant plastic to protect your camera mirror and sensor while not attached to a lens.
