Use Selective Focus And Blurred Foreground To Eliminate Distracting Backgrounds

When composing a portrait or isolating a subject with a shallow depth of field, it is easy to forget to check on that background and make sure that it isn't going to take attention away from your subject. 

In the video below, shot exclusively for Adorama, you can watch AdoramaTV's Bryan Peterson step through three different compositions that are identical as far as the subject goes, but differ greatly in the way that the subject and background work together in the composition.  Note the dark shape in the background and how some tiny adjustments can take that out of the way and let the subject shine.
