I bought this tripod to upgrade from the Benro Travel Angel that I already have. Basically what I was looking for was a tripod that was higher than the Travel Angel with the column down. That column just gets in the way if you want to spread the tripod legs out to shoot low. This tripod is just right for my 5 foot 10'' frame without having to bend down. It comes with a separate center column, so I can easily unscrew the head from the tripod, attach it to the column, and then screw the column onto the top of the tripod. The center column is 8 inches long and will telescope to 12 inches. I gave this tripod 4 stars because of the ball had that it comes with. Separately I would give the tripod legs 5 stars, and the head 3 stars. The included head has one lever to lock everything. It has one knob for friction control but that's for both the Ball and Pan. It's not for the pan only. I shot the ball with WD-40 which made it a lot smoother. But I still prefer to be able to lock the ball while still being able to pan the camera. I fixed this problem by switching the new head with the head from my old tripod. My suggestion would be to try to find just the tripod legs and then buy a separate head more to your. Liking
