Questions & Answers

CHARLES S : What is the outside diameter?WILLIAM Q : .75 DIAMETERROSS K : The rubber washer is 7/8 inch in diameter
Shopper : Is there something to prevent this from backing out?STANLEY I : Not really. But, the design of the clip that attaches to the FastenR allows for easy swiveling without inadvertently backing out the FastenR. Plus, I've gotten into the habit of randomly tightening the FastenR.STANLEY H : The black rubber washer between the FastenR-3 and the camera is of some help. Most of the insurance against backing out comes from your own diligence in checking the tightness of the connection periodically during use.ANTONIO C : Hello, if you mean the fastener unscrewing, the rubber washer does a good job of keeping it from easily unscrewing. Of course you have to be sure to have tighten it sufficiently but not over tighten. It also helps to slightly moisten the rubber washer before attaching it. Depending on what and how you hang from it, there is the possibility of the thread lossing over time. But in practice I always check the connection as I would do with any other piece of equipment. I have used this on 12 hour weddings with no problems.HERBERT W : There is a thick (~1/8") rubber pad between the fastener and the camera/lens body. The connector is screwed into the socket firmly enough to slightly compress the pad so that it stays in position. Since the clip on the strap swivels, there is, theoretically, little to no torque on the connector. I have had no problems with any of my connectors backing out. I use this strap and connector for my Canon 40D body with the battery grip and with a 70-200 2.8L lens for taking football photographs; I have a connector on each for when I change lenses, so that I can continue to keep the camera on the strap. So far I have had no issues. The only caution I would make is not to screw the connecter in so tightly that it would buckle the socket (as mine is in the plastic housing of the battery grip, that would not be a good thing ;-D )WILLIAM Q : I guess it could, but have NEVER noticed it trying. I never worried about it. I have them on two cameras, and one Canon 70-200 f2,8 lens. Before I screwed it into hole I put duct tape down to keep from scratching bodies. I used black tape. Keeps ring from scratching body. If you use two cameras, this is the way to go. No more shoulder or neck fatigue. I love it. If you use one camera just take apart and use one strap. Handy and fast to use with two or one camera.Karl H : There is a thick, soft washer.... Once it is tight, I have never had it come out. NICOLE R : While I haven't experienced it backing out, it was something I was worried about. The Black Rapid website has some videos on using their products and they suggest using a little water on the rubber gasket before tightening it down. I did this. Like I said never had a problem, whether it was due to their suggestion, who knows?JOAN S : No - there is nothing that stops this from backing out. It is recommended that you wet the rubber a bit when you initially screw it in - and it is initially tightened down pretty good (compressing the rubber). I am always afraid of it becoming unscrew that I check it often. I have not had a problem with it yet, but when it is holding equipment as expensive as it is, checking gives me piece of mind.Pierre B : There's a sort of rubber washer you can't see in the pic. It has been very secure. TREVOR A : There's a rubber gasket that goes between the fastener and the camera. Crank it down tight using the connector on the strap and that thing is on there tight. I always give it a good turn before each shoot, just a good habit, and I never worry about it backing out. DONALD F : This fastener is threaded just like a tripod head. So you simply screw it in and you're set. It has a rubber gasket type of think that creates a tight fit against your camera. Just turn it until it is snug.KATHRYN P : Not really. I haven't had a problem with that, but I check it often to make sure it's tight. I use the Black Rapid system on both DSLRs and also a compact camera. TED B : Try to moisten rubber part before and tighten pretty good. Sorry, I didn't have this problem and my camera is quite heavy.TIM B : There is a rubber gasket between fastener and camera which helps, I have never had any problems with the fasteners backing out and I own 2 of these. They stay tight for me.AARON T : Friction and a rubber washer put it in a state of tension to lock it in place.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?KEVIN N : Like the Black Rapid so much with my Nikon, decided to get an extra fastenR to use with my Sony Nex-3.MARCEL H : Rock solid attachment for a strap to a 1/4 inch tripod socketDEAN S : I thought I needed to replace my Black Rapid connector because I lost the original, so I bought this one. I actually like the original better because it is less obtrusive in my hand when I am shooting vertical compositions using a vertical grip.

Exactly what it looks like.

It's very strong and feels incredibly durable. I don't have any problem letting my 5D MKIII hang from this. The only down side is that it occupies the tripod mount. I realize this is obvious but it would be really cool if I didn't have to take it off to shot on a tripod.

Works well, no problems

Someone asked "Is there something to prevent this from backing out?" It has a rubber washer that keeps the fastener tight. I wondered about it myself when I first bought a couple Black Rapid RS4 Straps, but I carry a Nikon D300s with a Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR on that strap, with these fasteners, while walking around, literally all day, in Thailand and USA, and it has never backed out. The strap is starting to fray slightly from the part that the fastener is attached to, but it has nothing to do with the fastener. I love this whole setup.

It does its job.

I purchased the Black Rapid FastenR-3 to make my own shoulder camera strap, similar to the Black Rapid version. I attached the FastenR-3 to a Kirk Arca Swiss for a quick release to either camera or lens plate. Simple solution to use my camera and lens on tripod, monopod and shoulder strap. Sometime simple is the best.

Black Rapid FastenR-3 for R-Strap

The Black Rapid R-Straps are easily one of the best after market camera straps around. Being able to purchase the FastenR-3 as a seperate item means that I can have the camera strap attached to the camera body when using a 50mm lens, or direct to the lens if using something like a 70-200.
