I upgraded from a 1Dx Mark III to this, and I'm very happy. The focusing system is noteably more capable, and my EF lenses work better than ever. The EF 85/1.2 Mk2 in particular nails the focus every time - which was always a problem with this lens. The electronic shutter is so good there is little need to use the mechanical one. I knew it was a 24MP camera, so knocking it for that would be silly.

Exceeded expectations in every way. Laser focus for tens of thousands of images per day. Unsure of why others are upset over more claimed pixels. The R1 is the best investment I have ever made after 50 years on the job. Paid for itself on day one. Thank you Canon.

Anyone who complains about the 24MP is an idiot and doesn't shoot sports professionally. They also need to learn to frame the image using the view finder and not rely on cropping. 24 MP is more than enough. The R1 is the Canon equivalent of the Sony A9 III. The R5 II is the equivalent of the Sony A1 II - just $2000 cheaper. I own an R1 and R3. I also own an R5 II and a R5. The R1 solves most of the issues I have with the R3, like having dual CFX B card slots. Adding better AF, pre-capture, a bigger, brighter EVF, 40 FPS and to me it was worth the loss selling an R3. The same with the R5 II vs. the R. The question is, if I were to trade up again, would it be for a second R1 or a second R5 II? It would be for a second R1 :)

Its usable pixel counts usually surpass those high-res bodies (like A1 or R5II) if you are shooting at low light or ISO, or both. Believe me or not, my 32000 ISO shots holds more details than some of those cameras's shots at <10000 ISO. Its AF system is abusolutely the best I have ever seen. I use a well-calibrated red dot sight on R1 for fast-moving animals and the only thing I needed to do was to point the red dot at the animal and press the shutter. Even withou tuning its AF behavioer, every shot is in-focus, this is amazing..

I hoped this camera would be higher than the R5 which I own which has 45 mp images. I prayed that this Amazing camera would at least be 65 mp. Nope! It's just a 24 mp?. Why ? Why? Why? Fuljifilm has 104 mp cameras and Sony had 65 mp cameras and Canon does not.

I wanted to pre-order this, but I could not. This is just a slight hardware bump over the R3, sure the autofocus will be great but without a higher resolution picture, it will produce the same images that the R3 makes. Save your money and wait for a version that has more megapixels.

Ahead of the Game
The Canon EOS R1 is our top-of-the-line full-frame professional camera that is a powerhouse for professionals working in fast action situations, carrying on the legacy of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III digital SLR camera. The 1-series has a long tradition of providing excellent AF performance, speed, durability and reliability, all areas the EOS R1 excels in, but there is so much more including new faster processing, state-of-the-art video features, and networking options that really make this 1-series camera the ONE everyone has been waiting for.
Built for Action
New Back-Illuminated Stacked Sensor
The sensor design of the EOS R1 is all new, and all Canon. This new 24.2MP back-illuminated, stacked CMOS image sensor is the heart of the EOS R1. Balancing the needs of high-speed shooting and high-image quality imagery, this sensor provides enough pixels for poster sized prints, while also providing incredibly fast sensor read-out speeds, and enhancing low-light performance.
Cross Type AF
The CMOS image sensor in the EOS R1 is Canon's first to support cross-type line detection autofocus. Unique to the EOS R1's Dual Pixel Intelligent AF image sensor, a portion of the photodiode has been rotated at 90 degrees, which when combined with the traditional array of photodiodes provides cross-type AF for extremely accurate horizontal and vertical line detection focusing which works even during tracking with up to 100% area coverage. This new support improves subject discrimination accuracy enabling the camera to tenaciously autofocus on the desired subject even when there are many horizontal lines. Detection is improved when focusing on small size subjects, in situations when there are objects close and far away from focus within the AF frame, or when the subject is low contrast. This provides reliable subject distance measurement performance by reducing the influence of patterns and obstructions.
Get Accelerated
The DIGIC Accelerator is a completely new image processor, developed by Canon to supplement the powerful DIGIC X image processor. The DIGIC Accelerator handles the processing that makes many of the new features of the EOS R1 camera possible, allowing the DIGIC X image processor to focus solely on image processing. Together they combine for high-precision focusing, with incredible speed at high-image quality.
Faster Readout Speed
The faster readout speed of the back illuminated and stacked full-frame CMOS image sensor in the EOS R1 has reduced the rolling shutter distortion substantially. This level of rolling shutter distortion performance is nearly equivalent to the mechanical shutter of the EOS-1D X Mark III camera. The sensor read-out is so fast that it has virtually eliminated Electronic shutter rolling shutter distortion issues.
Dual Pixel Intelligent AF
Autofocus is on a whole new level with the EOS R1. New Dual Pixel Intelligent AF subject tracking allows you to maintain focus on a moving subject even when they are obscured briefly while shooting. And, for even faster positioning of your active AF Area, the EOS R1 adds Canon's Eye Control AF - which is improved compared to the Eye Control AF system in the EOS R3 camera. Once you calibrate the viewfinder to your eye, just look where you want to focus, and the AF Area will move there when you press the AF activation button. This new system is even robust enough for many users to work when the photographer is wearing glasses. Many users will find that this is the fastest and most effortless way to move your autofocus point.
Electronic Shutter
Incredible power is at your fingertips in Electronic Shutter mode. With it, imagemakers can capture imagery at up to 40fps in RAW, JPEG or HEIF and you can freeze the fastest action with shutter speeds up to 1/64,000sec, and with the blackout-free viewfinder setting you are never in the dark when taking photos of fast-moving action. Additionally, with the ability to shoot flash photos with Electronic Shutter mode photojournalists and event photographers now have even more versatility available to them.
Powerful continuous and Pre-Continuous Shooting
EOS R1 features up to 40fps continuous shooting speed supporting JPEG, RAW, and HEIF image formats and when Pre-Continuous Shooting is enabled, pressing the shutter button halfway will start the pre-shooting process, when you fully depress the shutter, the previous 1/2 -second of images will be written to the memory card (so up to 20 if you are shooting at 40 fps), and will continue capturing images until you release the shutter button.
Features
Back-Illuminated Stacked Technology
The EOS R1 features an all-new 24.2 Megapixel back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor, ensuring blazing fast readout speeds and enhanced low-light performance. This powerhouse sensor delivers stunning image quality, virtually eliminating rolling shutter distortion and is perfect for high-speed shooting.
All the Action, In Focus
Experience next-level autofocus with the EOS R1. Our new subject tracking technology allows you to maintain focus on a subject even when they are obscured briefly while shooting.
Cross-Type AF
In a first for Canon, the CMOS sensor itself now has cross-type AF support, where a portion of the photodiode has been rotated 90 degrees to provide more stable focusing performance and better subject discrimination capability by being able to perform both vertical line detection, and also horizontal line detection.
Precision Subject Detection and Autofocus
The EOS R1 features an extensive range of detectable subjects for a variety of different situations. With People Detection, the eyes, face, head, upper torso, or full body can all be detected whether it be a portrait of a bride at a wedding, or a soccer player running directly at the goal. When Subject to detect is set to Animal Detection, the eyes, face, or the entire body of cats, dogs, birds, and horses can all be effortlessly tracked so wildlife photography and videography of unpredictable wildlife or pets can be easier. When Vehicle is set in the subject to detect menu, motorsports cars and motorcycles, trains and aircraft can all be detected and an additional spot focusing mode allows the helmet of open race cars, or motorcycle riders to be focused on for additional precision.
Register People Priority
With Register People priority enabled, simply by taking a photo of a person, the photographer or videographer can prioritize them as registered subject when more than one face is detected in a scene. The camera then will tenaciously track these subjects across the scene regardless of when other subjects may be in the frame or even obscuring the subject. Whether you're photographing your next wedding or doing a video shoot on a gimbal stabilizer for a small business client, with Register People priority the camera will diligently work to prioritize focus on the subjects you want in focus.
The Action is Your Priority
Action priority setting is powered by the Accelerated Capture system. It is a new autofocus setting where in select sports, the camera can analyze and understand more information about the subject movements of players, and automatically move the AF point to a player performing a specific action based on their motion and body movements - such as taking a shot, passing a ball, and so on. With information such as face, head, eye, torso, and joint information of the main subject, and additionally other subjects within the scene at the same time, as well as the ball position information, the camera can tenaciously track the ball carrier, or subjects that are temporarily hidden as they move within the scene or when they make an important action such as shooting the ball. Additionally, the camera can better predict their actions and can recognize where to place the focus to capture moments that were not possible before to help ensure you get the action shot you want when the action is moving incredibly fast in front of you. Soccer, volleyball, and basketball are all supported currently.
Keep Your Eye on the Moment
For even faster positioning of your active AF Area, the EOS R1 adds Canon's Eye Control AF - which is now even more advanced than the Eye Control AF system found in the EOS R3 camera. Once you calibrate the viewfinder to your eye, simply look where you want to focus, and the AF Area will move there when you press the AF activation button. This new system is even robust enough to work when the user is wearing glasses.
Accelerated Capture
DIGIC Accelerator
The DIGIC Accelerator is a completely new image processor, developed by Canon to supplement the powerful DIGIC X image processor. The DIGIC Accelerator handles the processing that makes many of the new features of this camera possible, allowing the DIGIC X processor to focus solely on image processing, together they create high-precision focusing, with incredible speed with high-image quality. The DIGIC Accelerator is tasked with analyzing enormous volumes of data instantly, and directly from the image sensor. The characteristics and movements of the subject, and the information of subjects other than the main subject are all analyzed within a scene allowing for high precision AF that follows movements that conventional tracking systems cannot. With information such as face, head, eye, torso, joint information, subjects other than the main subject, time series information, and in sporting events the ball position information, the camera can tenaciously track subjects that are temporarily hidden and better predict their actions and where to place focus to capture moments that were not possible before.
