Questions & Answers

Shopper : I would like to buy a Fuji X10 with the new sensor (serial no. 22and above) where can i be sure to buy one?THOMAS J S : This has always been a mystery. Sorry I cannot help you. Perhaps you can get the seller to give you the serial number of the camera before you buy it.SPENCER G : Thanks for asking but I was unaware there was a new sensor available...the old one's excellent anyhow. As to availability, Adorama would know better than me. Sincerely yours -- Spencer
Shopper : Someone already asked about the "orb" issue. I've read elsewhere that the cameras with more recent serial numbers have remedied this problem. Can I be sure that the one I buy from Adorama is one of the ones after this change was made?JEFF H : I think that was only an issue in the very early model #s . I picked one up last summer and haven't run into the problem.THOMAS J S : The buss on one of the forums is that if the serial number begins with 23 or 24 or higher, the camera has the new sensor. My X10 serial number is less than that and it has the original sensor. You should also know that there is considerable variation in the degree of problem in the "orby" sensors. Mine is only slightly affected.ROLAND B : I've had good service from Adorama. I would suggest calling a salesman personally at Adorama, get his/her name, and tell them your concern. Then if you get a camera with this problem, return it for a full refund. I personally sold my X10 and upgraded to an X100---a superior camera compared to the X10. DAVID H : I do not think Fuji ever released a range of affected serial numbers of affected cameras. I know they will replace sensors if any owner requests it.. I have not noticed any problems in mine (purchased several months after the fix) although I have not photographed anything that would especially provoke orbs. It is more than six months since the newly designed sensor was introduced so I think that any camera now purchased would have the new orb-free sensor designTUU H : I am not aware of being able to identify the remedied cameras by serial numbers, but I did have my camera replaced by Fuji around June/July of this year. It was replaced with a brand new unit (different serial from the original) with the new sensor. All that was needed was contact Fuji service (in New Jersey) provide your email address. You will receive a form by email and instructions for sending in the unit, you pay shipping there and they Fedex you a remedied or new unit.
Shopper : Thinking of possible astrophotography , is it possible to use 30sec exposure when set to ISO12800?GUSTAVO S : I recently got my camera, but I checked and it seems that it only gets a maximum of one quarter of a second exposure when set to ISO12800. I set the camera on Manual and tried. I recommend you double check this info on the manual. Best regards,JONATHAN S : I really like this camera. I have done astro photo with my big Nikon 5100 and original D100. The Fuji x 10 seems to limit the max exposure time at ISO 12800 to 1/4 sec. at auto iso 800 the max I get in manual mode is 4 sec. While I can get stars in the photo at 12800, it is quite noisy. At ISO 800 i get some stars.. so answer to q is no.GEORGE H. M : Yes. 30 sec is the max shutter speed. Additionally, Alexander White's book on the x10 covers some issues related to astrophotography including connecting the x10 to a telescope.DAVID H : No is the quick answer. It seems that the longest 30 sec exposure is only available at iso 100. With every increase in iso the maximum possible exposure is reduced. At the iso 12800 you can only get as long as 1/4 sec.RICHARD P : Hi, I'm just writing back to say that I'm afraid I can't answer your question. The reason I appear as a reference for the Fuji X-100 via Adorama is that I did order one. But at the very last minute, right before it was to ship, I canceled the order and purchased another camera. My question to you would be, "Under what conditions would you need a 30 second exposure at ISO 12,800?" Best of luck, Richard

No DSLR, but great shots

I have been looking for a small camera that I could take to family and personal events and everywhere and not miss photo opportunities and get some decent pictures. I am happy with this camera. You can tell the difference from my professional cameras, but it is not bad. It has a really good AI mode, so most of the time I do not fiddle with the manual controls and just use it as a point and shoot. I got a camera cover manufactured or at least labeled by EZphoto, made of really good leatherette. The Fuji case was just too expensive. You will want to get a case. I also got two extra batteries from a third party because the battery life on this thing lasted about 225 shots. I just reached into my pocket and changed the battery at the wedding where I used it. It looks like a high quality compact German camera from the 1960s with all the little knobs, so it is quite non-threatening. I have had some great shots with this thing. That often described "orb problem" is not an issue for me. I would just remember the particular weakness of the device and compensate for it.

GREAT LITTLE CAMERA

Just got the X 10 yesterday from Adorama and I am very pleased with the pictures I have taken. The RAW pictures behave a little different in Lightroom compared to my Canon Raw but that could be me. Will continue to work with it. Yet to test auto bracket and see what I get. So far the low light performance is great and the picture quality outstanding. It has enough dials to keep me happy and away from shooting automatic mode The X 10 is really built well. feels good in the hand and the zoom lens with the off/on as a part of the lens is great. Guess you can tell I like it.

WOW...

Just got back from a family vacation from California. I was given this camera to use by a friend. Once I got used to it I had a hard time using my Pro equipment. Great in low light, fast focus and very, very sharp. This is a point-n-shoot for you camera pros who do not want to carry all your equipment all the time. Truly an impressive camera for the size. Cons: The viewfinder is not true and not accurate to the photos. I did not like the case from Fuji as it was not easy to take on and off for access to your battery and card. I've placed my order for this camera and can't wait to get it! HK

Very Disappointing!

Although impressive, versatile and well designed in a "retro/leica" way, this camera disappoints when it comes to image quality. Not bad for a high-end point and shoot, but at closer inspection images are soft and mushy even at the best quality settings. Also, the Fujifilm .raf RAW format is difficult to deal with. Very few tools (if any) aside from the included Silkypix software will actually read let alone process the format. Don't even think about opening them in Adobe RAW and Photoshop. All in all, a fine camera for the well heeled enthusiast, but anyone whose serious about their photography will soon realize this is nothing more than pretentious high-tech toy.

I like the viewfinder

I wear glasses and have found that most small cameras don't have enough eye relief for me to see the entire image at once. The Fuji x-10 has plenty of eye relief with a big, bight view of the subject. I'm totally pleased. I've only been shooting for a day now, all of it indoor with low light. I'm pleased with the results. In dim light, the auto ISO tends to favor lower ISO with slower shutter speeds than I would prefer, but the image stabilization does a fine job for subjects that are not moving. You will want to manually set the shutter speed if you are shooting a moving subject in dim light. The camera is small enough to fit in my coat pocket, something my Olympus micro 4/3 camera doesn't do. Case Logic makes a small case with shoulder strap that can be purchased locally for $14.

Great at what it does

I Wanted a smaller solid camera that I could carry on my time away from assignments that was simple and inspiring. This camera does fit that! Sharp, great images off the film card, and files that could be published. This is not a film Leica, but it sure feels good and reminds me of my Contax G2 and M4P.

My other camera's an M9

Looks and feels remarkably like my 35mm Leica CM zoom. What else can I say?

The X10 - a premium compact camera sets new standard of style and quality for digital photography

The X10 is a highly advanced compact camera with specifications that follow in the footsteps of the sought after multi award-winning FinePix X100 (released in March 2011): the ultimate in refined design, components, functions and specification. Featuring a bright optical zoom viewfinder with a wide viewing angle, the X10 allows users to enjoy the pleasure of photography via a traditional viewfinder, providing all the benefits and ease of composition that this brings.

Thorough attention to detail is evident as soon as you take hold of the X10's stunning body. With its upper control deck and base manufactured from lightweight, yet ultra strong, die-cast magnesium alloy; and mode dials and lens ring featuring their quality, aluminum milled, textured finish. The intuitive operability of the various dials and shutter-release button is also apparent with the manual zoom lens doubling up as an on/off power switch, ensuring you can react quickly to potential photo shooting scenarios as they occur.

Main features
(1) Newly-developed F2.0 wide-angle and F2.8 telephoto, bright, FUJINON 4x optical, manual barrel zoom lens
The X10 features a newly-developed high-definition Super EBC FUJINON*2 lens which achieves superb image clarity over the whole of the image. The lens consists of 11 glass lens elements in 9 groups, including 3 aspherical glass lens elements (6 sides) and 2 extra-low dispersion lens elements. The result is an ultra bright lens with a wide-angle maximum aperture of 2.0 and telephoto maximum aperture of 2.8.

With its all-metal lens barrel you are guaranteed a smooth zoom action which helps you compose your photos quickly and easily. In addition the camera's power switch has been deftly built into the manual barrel zoom to facilitate fast responses and to help you avoid missed photo opportunities. The lenses are designed by R&D of FUJINON who has a long-term experience to supply a majority of professional broadcasting lenses.

Featuring a newly developed Optical Image Stabilisation mechanism, you can rest assured that any lens aberration is kept to an absolute minimum and image resolution is maximised making the most of the sensor performance and delivering high quality images.

The lens is capable of taking super-macro shots as close up as 1cm. This function can also be combined with 7-blade aperture to deliver a stunning soft-focus "bokeh" effect perfect for shooting portraits using the telephoto zoom.

(2) Combining a bright optical viewfinder with a wide viewing-angle and a manual barrel zoom lens
Fujifilm's engineers have used an arrangement of 3 aspherical lenses plus a special dach prism configuration to deliver a viewfinder with superior brightness and a superb field of view with its extra wide viewing angle, and all whilst still maintaining a compact camera size. This, combined with the Manual Barrel Zoom functionality, makes a real difference and brings a welcome old-style photographic feel to the X10.

(3) Newly-developed large 2/3" 12 megapixel EXR CMOS sensor and advanced EXR Processor
The X10 features a newly-developed large 2/3" 12 megapixel EXR CMOS sensor with approximately twice the sensor area, and approximately 2.5times the pixel area, compared to existing Fujifilm camera models*3.

This bespoke EXR CMOS sensor combines Fujifilm's proprietary EXR technology (which can select the optimum shooting mode from the three options below SN / DR / HR), with CMOS technology to provide bright, sharp images in all shooting conditions.
• SN High Sensitivity and Low Noise mode - produces clear and sharp high-sensitivity images whilst keeping the noise levels low, and is an ideal choice for capturing night scenes or indoor situations with poor lighting.
• DR Wide Dynamic Range mode - delivers a much increased dynamic range (up to 1600%) delivering rich gradations and detail in both the shadows and highlights
• HR High Resolution mode - takes full advantage of the 12 megapixel resolution to reproduce the finest details in landscape and portrait scenes, perfect for use on bright clear days

In addition the X10 features a high-speed EXR CMOS and EXR processor which facilitate high-speed continuous shooting at up to 7 frames per second at the full 12 megapixel resolution (L size), and 10 frames per second at the reduced resolution M size.

Plus a 49-point matrix contrast AF which provides high-speed and high-precision auto focusing thanks to the fast CMOS capabilities and the advanced EXR Processor's AF system.

With its super speedy shutter-release time lag of approx. 0.01 seconds, the X10 can capture even the most fleeting of photo opportunities. And it's also worth mentioning that it features best-in-class*4 1080p Full HD movie recording capabilities.

(4) The X10's elegant design that has inherited the look and feel of the X100, and the "made in Japan" seal of quality
Manufactured from strong, yet lightweight, die-cast magnesium alloy, the X10's upper control deck and camera base are perfectly designed and add a real sense of style and glamour to the camera. On top of this the exquisite notches of the exposure compensation dial and the satisfying torque feedback produced by the hidden metal ball in the click-stop mechanism ensure the quality of craftsmanship is truly apparent.

(5) Fujifilm's unique functions for adjusting image quality
EXR Auto - for the automatic optimisation of the sensor and the camera settings

The X10 not only offers "EXR Auto" intelligent scene recognition (which adjusts camera settings to suit sunsets, blue skies, greenery, beaches, snow, etc.), and also detects people and identifies difficult to photograph backlight conditions, but now, it even has the ability to detect subject movements. The intelligent EXR CMOS Sensor automatically selects the optimum shooting mode from of a total of 99 different variations, this enables it to capture any kind of scene perfectly in even the most difficult shooting conditions.

In terms of ISO settings, the X10 can capture shots between ISO 100 for well lit conditions and top picture quality, and ultra-high ISO 12800*5 for the most minimal of lighting conditions. If the correct exposure cannot be obtained with the selected ISO setting, the ISO Auto Setting function adjusts it automatically between 100 and 3200.

For those of you that like to experiment, the X10 offers Fujifilm's unique Film Simulation modes, reflecting the company's background in photographic films. Eight setting are available, including Velvia / PROVIA / ASTIA which allow you to reproduce the well-known tones of highly popular color reversal films, as well as X10 expands the scope of photo expression with Monochrome Mode that can be fine-tuned with R / Ye / G filter settings.

In addition to Auto White Balance, the X10 provides a choice of 9 white balance presets to compensate for the color of different light sources. Users can also set a Custom White Balance using a grey card or other surface, or select the optimum Kelvin value.

The X10 also features detailed image adjustability settings with options including "Color" to adjust color strength, "Highlight Tone" / "Shadow Tone" to adjust contrast in highlight / shadow sections, and "Sharpness" to sharpen or soften pixel edges.

Finally there is a Noise Reduction Adjustment function to set the strength of noise reduction at five different levels according to the users' emphasis on whether to prioritise high resolution or low noise.

(6) Other notable features on the X10

• 4x optical zoom featuring Fujifilm's new Intelligent Digital 2x Telephoto zoom technology, doubling the telephoto capabilities and providing up to an 8x zoom
• Diverse manual shooting modes that can be selected according to scene type (Program / Aperture Priority / Shutter Speed Priority / Manual)
