Capture One Pro is the best RAW editing software on the market today in terms of performance and image quality. The newest version (4.1.3) is even faster and has more usability improvements over the previous versions. Most importantly, the upgrade from previous versions (including this one) is free and easily downloadable from the Capture One's website! I use it for the main part of my workflow: - importing the RAW format pictures from my camera (by the way, the software supports all modern cameras and formats) - selecting the best images. I should say that it's very convenient to view several images at once (on one screen), e.g. you can zoom in to 300% and see which images are the sharpest, or apply basic edits to all the images and see how they compare to each other - among many other things. - editing the images. This is obviously the main part and this is where Capture One excels and beats its competitors. Editing is very fast (picture changes on the fly as you adjust levels, contrast, etc), controls are easy to use and intuitive. - creating the JPEG files. Very fast, very low noise. Output dialog is meaningful and intuitive (you can specify TIFF or JPEG file format, resolution in DPIs, compression level etc). Best of all, you can download the 30-day trial from the Capture One's website to try it out for free before you buy!

Pro: Not as full featured as Adobe Camera Raw, but it's much better at what it does. Better skin tones, sharper, more detailed output. I used to think Adobe was king of the hill until I tried the sample software. I was surprised at how much better my images looked using Capture One. Cons: Their documentation is abysmal and their web site isn't any better. If you're already accustomed to processing your own images it doesn't take long to figure out the software. But if you have any questions, you're on your own. I still don't know what the heck the "Move To" folder is. Bottom line: It can be a little confusing, but worth it when it comes to IQ.
