I am quickly finding myself using this lens more than my 24-70 both for the light weight and the sharpness, I encourage you to get this lens, if you do not require 2.8, this lens is the next best thing

I generally use prime lenses exclusively, but a recent shoot of North Carolina's waterfalls found me wishing for a normal-range zoom lens. Changing prime lenses at the waterfalls was inconvenient, occasionally impractical, and, at times, dangerous. I purchased this lens immediately after the waterfall shoot. It had received good reviews, and the price was right. The center portion of this lens is acceptably sharp, but the edge sharpness leaves much to be desired. I shoot with a Nikon D800, and my prime lenses are Sigma 24mm f/2.8, Sigma 35mm f/1.4 (my workhorse lens), Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G, and Nikkor 85mm f/1.8G. Although this one lens covers the focal length of my four prime lenses, this 24-85 zoom is not even in the same ball park, at least in terms of sharpness. Because I shoot with a tripod, the speed of lenses is inconsequential. This 24-85 zoom is acceptable as an all-day carry lens, but not acceptable if overall sharpness is critically important. This is about what you'd expect from a good consumer lens, which this is.

I shot a wedding with it last weekend...not a bad lens at all. Pictures seem pretty sharp, nice colors before editing. I can't complain. Especially since I picked it up used for a great price.

This has become my walkaround lens for my D7000. Good zoom range for DX (36-127) and I'm willing to sacrifice wider coverage compared to the 18-55, 18-105, or 18-200 in exchange for better VR and a faster f-stop on the tele end. It's sharp and focuses fast. It doesn't get the fifth star because of the amount of plastic it has. It's not a lens that will survive long in a rough environment, but it is still a good alternative to Nikons 24-70 f2.8 monster (in size and price) lens. For DX shooters, you get the modern version of the old 35-105 (with a bit of extra length), that won't be obsolete if you move up to FX cameras.

I was trying to decide what lens to put on my D600. Since I am still leary about the 24-85 VR, I found this as a "demo" and at such a good price, I bought it; I couldn't have done better! Not only does it work well on the 600, it also works very well on my "go-to" camera, my 35mm F6. I used this lens on vacation for just about everything; general portraits, inside a museum, inside a mine (yes, underground), B&W cityscapes, and everything in between. I can't say how the 35mm came out, but the digitals were flawless. I also wanted to say thank you to Adorama for the advice given on this product. It certainly fits my needs perfectly.

Great general purpose lens. I didn't check off rugged or durable because I haven't had the lens long enough to make that determination but it does seem initially to be of very good construction quality and durability. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the lens is a little noisy when focusing.

Useful walk-around lens, not that sharp or well built, but good enough.

Great all round and landscape lens. Point it directly at the sun without any ghosts or flares. Bokeh is decent, but use a 50mm prime if you want really great shots.

Average daylight lens, great focal span. Sharp but a little bit slow f. Seems to gather dust internally (no real impact). Feels fragile at 85mm.

I needed a light and small wide to normal focal length without breaking the bank. I already have the 24-70, but it is too big and heavy for light travel. The lens is very sharp at all zoom lengths, but has significant barrel (tele) and pincushion (wide) distortions. fortunately, you can easily correct it in NX2, so post processing is needed when you shoot architecture.

This lens feels lousy and cheap. But it is incredibly sharp at almost all focal lengths. Some barrel distortion at the bottom and pin-cushion at the top. This lens is on one of my cameras all the time.

AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED-IF lens includes a selection of Nikon advanced technology features, including Extra Low Dispersion Optical Glass (ED), Super Integrated Coating (S-IC), Internal Focusing Construction (IF), Aspheric optic (ASP), Silent Wave Motor Technology (SWM), Distance Technology, and G-Type design (aperture control exclusively from camera body).
Extra Low Dispersion Optical Glass is a high index, low dispersion glass that enables high optical performance from this wide-range compact zoom lens. Through low dispersion characteristics the lens' color performance is enhanced, adding sharpness and contrast to the image.
Super Integrated Coating, a form of multiple layer coating provides pictures of excellent clarity.
Internal Focusing Construction is a technology that allows the lens to be focused without changes in the lens' external size. Maintaining size helps keep balance, and with special control of optical movement, lenses can focus closer and with more consistent image quality.
Silent Wave Motor technology is another development that has added considerably to the Nikon lens selection. This step represents a significant expansion of Nikon's use of this advanced technology.
The G-type design is primarily designed for the newest Nikon SLR models, including both 35mm and Digital, all of which include a Sub-Command Dial, from which aperture control is possible. This design facilitates lens handling, and helps photographers keep a more positive grip on the camera as they use their right index finger to adjust aperture. This firmer grip and excellent balance will help photographers get sharper images, even as they adjust exposure and quickly shoot their pictures. Current compatible camera models include the D1x, D1H and D100 digital SLR cameras as well as the F5, F100, N80 and N65 film SLR cameras.
Distance Technology (included in D-type and G-type Nikkor) provides precision distance information from the lens. This information is incorporated into exposure calculations for both ambient light, flash illumination, and combinations of both, as in fill-flash photography. The distance information enables more precise calculations, leading to improved exposure control.
