PAUL L : Why do you use a lens hood?DEREK N : To reduce flare spots from light sources such as the sun.STEPEHEN R : A lens hood helps in several ways. Reduces lens flare, shades the lens from extraneous light from the side, gives a bit of protection to the lens from scratches and dings if the lens is bumped against something. Lens hoods can be an annoyance, for instance you can't turn a polarizer with one on, but for the most part I have one on at all times.LLOYD T : To block out stray light from effecting the picture you are trying to take.KATHRIN S : I use always use a lens hood for 2 reasons. One is help prevent possible light from shining into the lens which can cause flaring in the image. Also a lens hood may help prevent damage to the lens in case of a knock or fall.DAVID F : A lens hood prevents light from coming into your lens from the sides, bouncing around in the lens and resulting in 'flare' or spots of light of different colors in the middle of your photo. It also protects the lens to some degree. EDMOND W : Is this lens hood metal? I found that the plastic one does not lock well.STEPEHEN R : Surely you jest that it would be made of metal ;-). It is plastic like everything else. I'd say mine locks too well. I often have trouble getting it off, particularly if in a hurry. I have also found that it locks only one way. One way it locks well, but if put on 180 degrees it seems not to lock at all. Key is the small circle and line for lining it up. That seems to need to be on the top when applying.RANDALL S : Yes. But it does not lock well. Nikon hood is excellent

i bought a lens on ebay and the hood they sent was a Vivitar .. not the same as the Nikon HB-53 which is for the lens. So I got this Nikon hood and feel it works better.

Does what it is supposed to do

Hood is great for outdoors but can’t use indoors with the on-camera flash. Causes shadow.
