This softbox is a [*] to put together! It is best to put this thing together once and leave it that way if possible! Once assembled it works fairly well, however either I put it together wrong it is has a slightly quirky design! The issue I'm having is that the back of the softbox that attaches to the speed ring does not have quite enough material to completely close! So I have to stretch the material over the rods to try to close it up so there is no light leakage, in some cases I have used Gaffers tape.

I bought this modifier based on the Photoflex name and the other related success I have had with their other products. However this one I'm less than thrilled about! All in all the I like the softbox however the assembly is a royal pain...you almost need 2 people to assemble it. When you do get it assembled it seems that the back portion (the portion that attaches to the speed ring) seems to be a tad short of being securely closed! It almost seems like you have to stretch the fabric over the spines to attach it securely, however the fabric doesn't give at all, so you are left with these openings in the back of the unit that don't look like they are supposed to be there at all.

As with every Photoflex product, this one is solid, well made, and easy to use. I have acquired two of these to use as hairlights and/or narrow (narrower than a standard softbox) sidelights for carefully controlling the light thrown. Light, easy to control the lighting so I can create effects that are more challenging to produce with regular and larger softboxes. Strongly recommend as a basic part of a studio setup, especially in conjunction with something like a 3' x 4" softbox and/or umbrellas as key lights.

Not a bad product once you set it up correctly. It seemed difficult at first with the rods in the ring but once you get past the first setup its just fine

I have it mounted over a large shooting table, canted slightly back to wash bkgd shadows. I'm using the Photoflex QL lights. No complaints.

Quite Nice, Well made , yet I do think at that price point there still could have been a little more quality to the construction........definitely better than any " low budget" brands.....Narrow focus of light with quite rapid fall-off at the edges, works well when thats what you need, keeps the light off the background pretty well[...] After some research, I would say Overall that the price to value ratio is pretty good for these strip lights, probably the sweet spot in the market.

Worth every cent,
The HalfDome is a softbox that provides fill, hair, or main light, and can be used in traditional and digital photography as well as video and film
The HalfDome features a long, narrow shape along with a wider rear profile that allows fitting with Photoflex's OctoConnector line of softbox adapters, or Connector FV adapters. The interior comes in either soft white or silver. Soft white is suitable for a wide variety of traditional and digital photography uses. Silver is designed specifically for film and video applications.
HalfDome provides a focused highlight that adds volume and drama to any subject. The unique shape permits use as a hair light for multiple subjects, and a fill light with no over-spill onto the background. As a foreground light, the low profile makes it easy to shoot over. The internal baffle eliminates hotspots to create even, natural lighting. The baffle and front diffusion face can be removed easily, allowing a change from soft diffusion to sharp contrast without adjusting the setup. The proprietary Duracloth fabric's thick exterior ensures no loss of light or energy. And the company's QRC (Quick-Release Corners) make setup and teardown a snap
Photoflex Connectors
For use in traditional and digital photography, the Photoflex OctoConnector fits the Half Dome2 to most major strobe-lighting fixtures as well as to the Photoflex Starlite 3200, a tungsten light that provides soft, even, natural-looking continuous light. OctoConnectors are made of heavy-duty, heat-resistant cast aluminum, offering superior quality as well as durability. More than a dozen connectors range in retail price from $49.95 to $149.95, less expensive than most other brands.
For film and video applications, the Photoflex Connector FV fits the HalfDome2 to continuous lighting fixtures such as the Photoflex Starlite 3200. Fitting most lighting heads, the rugged Connector FV is all-metal, and will not break, melt, or warp.
40-degree Softbox Grid
The mouth of the HalfDome2 has been recessed so that Photoflex's 40-degree Softbox Grid can be added to provide precise control of light spread. The grid directs the light source, and keeps light from spilling onto a backdrop, floor, or ceiling. Unlike comparable products, the grid retains its shape indefinitely because every point of the nylon-webbed fabric is individually hand-sewn. Lightweight and portable, the grid responds well to daily setups and takedowns both on location and in the studio. A carry bag is provided for easy transport and storage.
