Amazing Lens

I upgraded from a Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6. No lag with the FTZ II adapter on this lens and my Nikon Z9. I've gotten some very crisp shots of black bear in a forest I frequently visit with this lens.

Solid lens

I was hesitant to spend the money on this lens but it has greatly improved my abilities to photograph wildlife. The f4 of the lens allows for a great increase in light and shutter speeds which allows for more clear images of fast moving wildlife. The build of the lens is solid and all the switches are very sturdy and well constructed. Looking forward to a lot of use with this lens.

Great wildlife lens, good values too

Super sharp and fast, reviews found it's on par with the Canon ones, you save $3K towards another lends or camera.

Affordable bird lens

I spend most of my photography time in pursuit of bird portraits and bird action shots. The Sigma 500mm lens is super sharp and couples well with my Nikon d500 and monopod. It’s a bit too heavy for hand-held work for any length of time. The f4 performs better than my Sigma 50-600mm zoom under lower light conditions and for action shots when speed is needed. I plan to visit Costa Rica soon where light will be an issue. I feel confident that this lens will perform.

professional quality at half the price

I've become an early purchaser of this new Sigma lens because I love the Global system with programable doc and the build quality of the sports line.I received my 500mm prime a week ago and I can't stop "shooting". I have been coveting a prime telephoto but just couldn't justify the $$$ for a Nikon. After reading an in-depth positive review from a Canadian Wildlife Photographer I decided to take the risk and purchased the Sigma. Its early and I'm still learning about its capabilities but my initial response is fantastic. Images are sharp and have that prime almost 3D quality. Our weather hasn't been the greatest so I have not had much sunny weather to shoot in however the lens preforms well on these grey days. Handholding the lens works for a short period but its heavy, like all prime telephotos, best to use support. I've been using a tripod with gimbal head but I think a monopod will do fine at higher shutter speeds. I own the very good Sigma 150-600mm sport and these images are definitely sharper. Birds become fully sharp at F6 and the auto focus captures birds in flight well. I am looking forward to shooting in better weather but my one week experience is all good. I'll keep my 150-600mm for airplane travel to Wildlife locations however the prime will be with me on auto trips and local shoots. The case is a nice feature in that you can attach your camera body to the lens and it all fits in the case. The case has backpack straps for short hikes to a location. The case is not appropriate for checked baggage on a plane but it looks like it will fit in most overhead compartments. I haven't experienced the $+ primes but my guess is that this lens will be a solid competitor

Good quality build, sharp pics, and seems very well balanced

Good quality build, sharp pics, and seems very well balanced. Love the sports line and the fact that I can customize via the Lens Dock and Sigma Optimization Pro. The electromagnetic diaphragm for the Nikon mount is also a major plus. Unlikely many people will want to hand hold this lens but I've had good luck with it and it doesn't seem as heavy as the actual weight.

The Sigma 500mm F4 DG OS HSM Sports lens is the first prime telephoto DSLR lens in Sigma's critically acclaimed Sports line. Designed for professional photographers, the 500mm F4 Sports is a rugged dust and splash proof lens created to weather the harsh conditions that many photographers find themselves in when shooting outdoors.

Exceptional image quality is achieved through rigorous optical design testing while autofocus and quality is maintained when paired with the Sigma TC-1401 1.4X and TC-2001 2X teleconverter. An advanced Optical Stabilizer (OS) touts a two mode switch, #1 for handheld photography, #2 for panning and tracking vertically and horizontally.

The new Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) touts 1.3X the torque of previous models for fast and snappy focusing. USB Lens Dock and Sigma Optimization Pro allow for lens customization including personalized focus limiters, 4 zone micro focus tuning, OS preview behavior, AF performance enhancement. Transverse chromatic aberration is greatly controlled through optical design and 500mm F4 Art allows for rear filters to be used, while a Sigma Weather Resistant (WR) Protector filter is provided with purchase.
