Questions & Answers

Shopper : Im fairly new to filters and what they do, I would like a filter to take pictures of sunsets and what not. Could someone explain to me how the number 52mm correlates with something like a 18mm-55mm lens or a 75mm-300mm lens? Does it fit on these lenses, is there a special filter I need? Thanks c:LOWELL T : The lens that shows 18-55mm or 75-300mm also has another number indicating the diameter of the lens. For example, I bought the 52mm circular polarizer to fit on my 28mm-80mm lens that uses 52mm filters. I also have one for a 70mm-300mm lens and it uses a 62mm filter. You should be able to look at the front of the lens and see the size printed on the ring around the lens, possibly along with the focal lengths (18-55). I can't say that all brands use this method for sure since I only have Pentax, Sigma and Tamron, but it should be printed on it somewhere. My primary use for the cpl is for making the clouds stand out in the sky and for getting a better photo of water scenes such as knocking out the glare and/or reflection. Hope this helps.VINCENT C : The Filter number (52mm) is the size of the threads on the front of the lens. if you look at the front of your lens where the size and name are written you will see a number with (mm) after it that is the thread diameter in milimeters and that is the size filter you need for that lens. Filters also use numbers to describe the color of the filter 1A-1B don't confuse the two, the size always has (mm) after it . Hope this helps clear it up a littleTIMOTHY W : I purchased the 52mm Circular Polarizer glass filter for my AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1:35-5.6G lens. Do a little study on polarizer filters and you will understand how they help improve colors during daylight. You just rotate the filter to make the adjustment and pop out the blue sky and green grass. I also helps you take photos through windows or rotate it to not see through windows. Another use is around water, can can rotate the filter if you want to see the bottom of a creek bed or rotate it to NOT see the bottom and only the surface. Always have some type of filter on your lens for protection. A UV or clear glass filter works at night or for inside flash photography. You need to determine the filter size of the lens you are using. Just looks up the specs on your lens to determine the correct filter size. Remember you can buy one filter being the largest size of your lens collection. Then just purchased inexpensive ring adapters to size down and use the same filter on smaller lens. Buying used filters has never been a problem for me either. But only at Adormama or similar vendors.BEN T : The "52mm" relates to the size of the front of the lens and has nothing to do with the focal length. So it works equally well with either of those noted or any others which it will fit on. Digital cameras require a rotatory polarizing filter. A graduated density filter may be useful for landscapes such as sunsets.WADE B : The 52mm filter size refers to the diameter of the filter threads & has no relation to the lens focal length. The Nikon 18-55 mm lens does use a 52mm filter; the Nikon 70-300 mm lens uses a 67mm filter. The filter size required by a lens is marked somewhere on the lens barrel, generally with a Greek letter phi followed by the filter diameter required. I can't get a phi into this message to illustrate, but it looks like an "o" with a vertical line or slash through it. A polarizing filter is the only one I use; the effect of colored filters can be added with image processing software (Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, etc.). Polarizers have maximum effect when shooting at right angle to the sun; for shooting sunsets at the sun, I wouldn't use any filter.GUY K : 52 is the diameter of the lens in millimeters at the end where the filter will screw on. It will say somewhere on your lens what the diameter is. I don't know if there is more than one thread pattern, I doubt it. This filter is an (almost) full time fixture on my 18-55 Nikon DX. I like it a lot. It's great for any time there's sky, clouds, or water in the pic. I don't know how this one compares with others. I find myself switching it from lens to lens which is a pain so I'm inclined to buy another one.BENJAMIN B : As long as the front of the lens you want to place it on is the same size (52mm), it doesn't matter if the lens is a telephoto or a fixed focus lens. A polarizer will eliminate o lot of scattered light which has the effect of slightly darkening the sky, making clouds slightly more pronounced, and enhance any "raying effects" from a light source (sun through the clouds). ....BenBILL F : The 18mm-55mm and 75mm-300mm lens values refer to the focal length of those zoom lenses. The 52mm filter size refers to the physical diameter of the filter which must match the diameter of the lens.
LAURA S : Will this filter fit on my Nikon 52 mm lens? Someone noted that it did not. What experience did others have?PAUL S : It should screw in fine - but as a polarizing filter needs to rotate, you may have problems tightening the filter onto the lens - and likewise, you may have problems removing it, if you tightened it too much! (The few times I've used a polarizer, I left it loose, as I knew it was coming off RSN... [real soon now...])GUY K : It fits just fine and works great on both of my Nikon DX 52mm diameter lenses. The inner ring screws in to the lens or another filter and the outer ring with the polarizer attached is free to rotate.VINCENT C : I used it on my canon lenses and had no problems with this filterMARGARET P : I have no idea I own a canon Best to ask the experts at adorama Good luckDAVID M : It works fine on my Nikon 52mm lenses.VASHI N : Fits on all my Nikon AIS lenses that are 52mm. No problems.
Shopper : Is this filter coated?, if not, do you think I should go for a coated one?BEN T : I've never used, or even considered a coated one. One can combine filters if desired. Mine works very well all alone.NATALIE Z : I would go with a hoya HD circ polar. They are awesome.

Good Quality, Good Value

I purchased this polarizer to use on pro glass. This is a great filter. Good workmanship and materials. Fit and finish are excellent and the low-profile threads offer smooth mounting. The Tiffen filters that I have purchased over the years have been of consistently high quality in all sizes, and are always a great value.

Excellent CP filter for cutting down glare

The Tiffen CP lens filter is a great, high quality filter. I used it on my Canon EOS 80D to shoot video footage at a car show. In years past I would shoot video without a CP filter and always got glare on the car windows that prevented proper viewing of the interiors of these cars. With the Tiffen I was able to get excellent footage and cut down on a lot of the window glare reflections. I am very happy with this lens filter and wish I had bought one earlier!

Good quality but the least used item in my camera bag.

Unless you have a specific need for eliminating the glare and not being able to compose around the glare or plan the time of day to avoid it, I wouldn't bother with a circular Polarizer filter. It can make the sky look evil and strange, so the benefits are often a trade-off with the down sides. The product is good quality but I find that this filter is the least used item in my camera bag.

Filter done right.

A very well functioning polarizing filter. The machining of the threads is excellent and therefore mounting is very smooth. Turning the variable filter is likewise very easy.

Tiffen Polarizer Filter

The only problem I had with the filter is that there was only 1 screw thread. It was difficult to get it to stay on the lens and when I did get it to stay, I didn?t trust it to stay. Everything else about the filter was excellent. Because I believe this was a one-off issue that happened to sneak past Tiffen QC, I would still recommend the filter.

In Love with 52mm Circular Polarizer

By Gaurav A.

Polarizer filters give you several key creative features. They evenly increase color saturation of all colors (except black and white), creating deep, rich scenics. They add contrast for dramatic skies and ariel shots. They eliminate the whitish glare from highly reflected surfaces like glass and water. Polarizers are two part lenses that rotate, allowing you to select the degree of additional saturation, contrast and glare reduction desired. My Polarize types: Circular -- for all types of c...

With sun and snow, this will great.

By Carole

Will use it all the time.

Just imagine capturing the perfect shot with enhanced color and contrast, free from the whitish glare that often washes out the vibrancy in your images. The 52mm Circular Polarizer Glass Filter is designed to do just that. This essential tool for outdoor photography helps in producing deep, dramatically blue skies while eliminating unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as windows and water bodies.

The 52mm Circular Polarizer Glass Filter not only improves color saturation significantly, especially in outdoor settings, but also adds depth to your black and white photography. By combining this Polarizer with a Red 25 filter (sold separately), you can create incredibly dramatic black and white landscapes.

This versatile filter can be rotated to achieve the desired effect, giving you complete control over your image output. For even more dramatic effects, pair the 52mm Circular Polarizer Glass Filter with an enhancing filter.

Designed to fit both standard and wide-angle lenses, this filter is also compatible with cameras equipped with beam-splitting metering systems, commonly found on auto-focus SLRs. For most 35mm auto-focus cameras, refer to your camera manual for compatibility.

To effectively polarize the sky with a Circular Polarizer, simply point your index finger at the sun, extend your thumb at a right angle (90 degrees), and rotate it around the axis of the index finger. This will help you identify the band of deepest blue from horizon to horizon, enhancing your landscape photography like never before.

With the 52mm Circular Polarizer Glass Filter, you can elevate your photography game, capturing stunning images with improved color saturation and contrast.

Tiffen Circular Polarizer Features

  • Ideal general use outdoor color filter
  • Gives the same deep contrast and glare reducing properties to black and white photography
  • Combines with Red filters for incredibly dramatic black and white landscapes
  • Can be rotated to achieve desired effect
