Questions & Answers

Steve P : How many cameras can this backpack hold? How many lenses?LIGHT D : It holds my D7000 with the 18-105 attached. This leaves room for my 50mm, 35mm, 85mm and SB-700 Speedlight (another smaller lens could fit in its space). It doubles as a backpack and shoulder bag. I also carry a camcorder in the upper compartment (a lens could be placed in here).DOUGLAS E : That would depend on the size of your camera and lenses. I have a Pentax K5 with the kit lens (18-55) (2) other zoom lenses (18-135 + 18-270) + a 50 mm lens and a flash unit that I carry around in the bag at all times. There is still more room in the top compartment but that does not have any padded dividers but it could easily hold an additional camera body.JAMES M : I carry one camera with a lens on it,but i have not tryed but there is room for camera body and i carry 2 other lenses, its durable cause its been dropped and dragged a few times ,thats what i like about , and i pack clothes in it so i dont have to take a suitcase.THOMAS P : The number of lenses than can be carried will depend on the size of each lens. The bag can carry more than one (1) DSLR if the camera bodies are separated from the lenses. In my Tamrac 5788 I carry a Nikon D80 with a 18mm-200mm lens attached, a Nikon S9100, Four additional (4) Nikon Lenses (70mm-300mm, 18mm-55mm, 28mm-100mm, 35mm fixed) a Nikon SB-600 Flash Unit, two different Nikon battery chargers, a Dell 15" Laptop and Dell AC Power Adapter. And there is still room for more.THOMAS P : As can be seen by the photograph provided by Tamrac the moveable partitions are positioned to hold one (1) SLR camera with a lens attached. However, there is no information relative the size of the lens that is attached to the camera, and the width of the camera bag is going to limit the length of the lens that is attached to the camera. This camera bag can hold more than one SLR camera if each of the camera bodies are not attached to the lenses. The number of lenses a camera bag will hold depends on the size of the lenses (the lengths and diameters of the lenses). In my Tamrac 57 I have a Nikon 80 with a 18mm-200mm lens attached, a Nikon S9100 plus the following Nikon lenses: 70mm-300mm, 18mm-55mm, 28mm-100mm, 35mm fixed, and a Nikon SB-600 Flash Unit and a 15" Dell Laptop with AC Power Pack. And, there is room for more ! ! !JOE H : This backpack can easily hold two cameras, one in the top section and one in the bottoms section. The number of lenses held will depend on their size, but the pack will hold a large wide zoom like a 70-200 and another three or four smaller lenses.MARYLYNNE D : I have this backpack, and it will hold my 7d with a mi-range zoom and two other lenses. It is a struggle to find a place for my 100-400, which fits best on the body or in the top/non photo compartment. Nonetheless, I've been happy with it, and I attach a tripod with the tripod foot pocket and a carabiner to keep the head from bouncing around too much.
Shopper : Does this backpack have a hip belt?THOMAS P : The Tamrac 5788 Evolution 8 does have a hip belt with 3 inches of padding on the right and left side of the belt. The weight of the bag contents will be supported on the shoulders by the shoulder straps which are also padded. The hip belt does an excellent job of keeping the backpack secure and in place. I carry a Nikon D3s with a 24-70mm f/2.8, a 70-300mm, a 50mm and a SB900 flash as well as some other items in my Tamrac 5788 and am very comfortable while carrying this equipment.ERIC K : Yes. The Tamrac 5788 Evolution 8 has a hip belt. The belt is a primarily a strap belt without padding except for 3-4 inches that are padded where the belt is attached to the pack. The 5788 is very versatile and comfortable. I use it to carry a Leica M8 and lenses as well as a Lumix DMC-GH2 with a 14-140mm lens.THOMAS P : This is one of the most fully featured versatile camera bags on the market. There are numerous detailed photographs plus videos of this product at the Tamrac web site URL copied at the bottom of this e-mail message. Scoll down the web page to the photograph named "Three-Way Harness System" and click on "Click to Enlarge" to see the various shoulder and waist straps. A great feature is that the waist straps can be folded and stored out of sight when not in use. www tamrac com/5788ALAN H : Yes, there is also a hip belt, which I forgot I had tored in the hide-a-way part of the baclpack.DANIEL N : Yes and it can be stored behind the padding. I love this pack. It holds a ton of gear and a laptop. Highly recommended. ALAN H : The backpack has two shoulder straps, which also changes the backpack into either a right or left shoulder sling, depending upon which snap hook is used. I do not know what a "hip belt" is, when used in the context of a "backpack." However, there is a strap which connects the right and left shoulder straps across the tummy. The user may leave this strap unbuckled or buckled, at one's discretion or situation.DANE W : Yes, it does have a hip belt. You can wear it like a regular backpack.SANDRA K : yes there is a hip beltMARYLYNNE D : Yes, it has a hip belt with a fair amount of length, so it would accommodate heavy outdoor clothing. The hip belt is not padded, however, just a 2-2.5 inch web strap with a the usual kind of clip.MARK B : Yes, it has a hip belt. When not in use, the hip belt tucks inside the padding on the back of the pack, so it's hidden and out of the way.ERIC A : No (at least mine did not)
Shopper : 1) Can you attach a small travel tripod to the outside of this bag? 2) Does it include an all weather cover for extra protection?MARSHAL L. S : 1) Yes, there is a small pocket (which can be open or closed) at the bottom of the pack for one foot of the tripod to go in. There is a strap at the top to secure the whole tripod to the pack. 2) Yes, there is a rain poncho sized exactly for the pack with stores in it's own pocket. It has an elastic band (think shower cap) which allows you to wrap the poncho around the pack and the straps are still exposed to wear the pack.JILL L : Hi Randy, I attach a large tripod onto the bag. But, only one foot fits into the bottom, still works great. Don't think there is a weather cover on this one JkDANIEL N : Yes to both. There is a small pocket on the front of the bag that holds the foot of the tripod and a buckled strap to hold the top. The upper zippered portion on the left side contains the rain fly. GERALD M : 1) There is a catch on the front zip-up-panel that you can put the foot of a tripod in and use the strap midway up the front to fasten the top. 2) This camera backpack includes a weather cover.JAMES M : 1) yes, you can attach a sm. or lg. tripod to outside on back of pack. 2) it comes with rain or snow cover in top of one of the side pockets.MIKE B : Yes is comes with a rain cover and dedicated pocket for the cover. Its an awesome bag. I wish it was as an inch bigger but it has been the best bag I have owed so far.MARYLYNNE D : Yes, there is a small tripod foot pocket near the bottom and a loop at the top for securing the tripod at both ends. The loop at the top is stretchy (too much so) and I replaced it with a caribiner to eliminate bounce. There is also an all weather cover in one of the small top pockets, and you can remove it and cover the whole thing. I like the laptop pocket as well, although I use it for a hydration bladder and a seat pad for lunching on rocks ;-)MARK B : 1) Yes. If the tripod is small enough, it will fit inside. I use a Velbon Ultrek 43 (with a ball head) an keep the tripod in the bag. It does run the length of the bag, into the top compartment. The top compartment is separated from the main section by a padded divider, secured with velcro. I tuck one corner of the divider into the main section, leaving a 'hole' where the tripod can be inserted from the top compartment down into the main section. 2) Yes, it includes a thin, PU-coated rain cover. It is well shaped, and has an elastic hem so it stays on the bag.WALTER D : 1) Yes you can attach a small tripod 2) Yes, include a rain coverTHOMAS P : I have owned several camera bags that have each had various limitations, and the Tamrac Evolution series are is a very well designed camera bags with most of the competitions limitations resolved. The Evolution 8 can handle a laptop with up to a 15" display. (My 15" Dell laptop is snug side-to-side, but it does fit.) 1. Yes, you can attach a small tripod to the outside of this camera bag. 2. Yes, the product includes a rain cover NOTE: There are additional product details and a great video of this product at the Tamrac web site.LIGHT D : Yes, you can attach a small travel tripod. A rain cover is also included. The added feature that sold me was that a laptop / iPad could be stored as well.DAVID K : I just measured. The distance from the bottom of the pod foot pocket to the top of the fastening strap is just under 11 inches/28 centimeters (your tripod needs to be at least that long). The fastening strap has quite a bit of play so the diameter of the closed tripod shouldn't be an issue, and one foot of the tripod would fit in the foot pocket so long as the diameter of the foot is under around 1.5 inches/3.8 centimeters. There are also extra loops to the sides of the bag so you can add a criss-cross of nylon or elastic line for additional stability.DAVID K : 1) Yes you can. I haven't attached a tripod but do attach a beefy monopod, and don't see why a travel tripod wouldn't work equally well. However, when a pod is mounted, the bag's center of gravity shifts further away from your body, which isn't ideal if climbing. 2) Yes it does include a weather cover. However, it is unnecessary in light drizzle/snow.

I was disappointed

I ordered this pack with the impression that it would fit my gears. I was disappointed though because while the bag is big, it did not have enough room for my gears. it was cramped. I had a hard time fitting in my 5D mark lll with a battery grip and the attached 24 - 70 f/2.8. I also had a hard time fitting in an extra 85 mm f/1.2 lens. There was hardly any room for my 580 flash. this bag looks good but it just is not roomy enough.

Great bag. I have a Pentax K30 with long lens, three additional lenses, a flash and a K 10D body in it. My 15" MacBook Pro fits right in. I am sure it will be a great carry on for my travels. I have my other small attachments, filters etc.

Great Upgrade, just what I wanted!

My old backpack made my equipment feel like I was carrying around a sack of bricks over my shoulder. This backpack is very sturdy and carries weight very well. Very good materials and construction. It is a little bit pricy, but after taking it half way around the world, it was well worth it! I used to carry 2 backpacks... one for camera stuff and another for my computer. I had to cut a few items, but now I have condensed everything into this one backpack. The top compartment is very convenient for small things you need access to all the time, especially while the bag is sitting between your feet on a plane or bus. I'd absolutely recommend this packpack to anyone who travels with 3-5 lenses, a small amount of other equipment, and a laptop.

5788 evolution pack

main camera slot if using a camera with a battery grip can be a little difficult to access camera. could use a couple more outside pockets... sling bag when this baby is loaded is just not possible.. if less than a full load// it is great

tamrac 5788

nearly every thing I own photographically needs to multi task. this bag does that well.. sling right or left and backpack. even though getting a full frame camera out of the side doors w/ a battery grip can take a little jiggle.....this is a cool bag !!!

Versatile for short or long trips

I replaced my Tamrac Expedition bag with this one because of the multiple access/multiple configuration capabilities. It is not quite as well made as the expedition in terms of padding/material and could use one or two more dividers but with a little work I have all of my gear (DSLR,battery grip, four lenses plus flash and filters)securely stowed. There is still room in the upper compartment. I use it as a sling bag for shorter trips (with less gear) and as a backpack for extended trips to Europe, etc. I still keep my Lowe slingbag for quick outings. But the Evolution really is a do everything bag.

best backpack on market that fits my needs .

Tamrac's new Evolution Series backpacks provide an unprecedented level of versatility. With their unique harness system, the Evolution Series backpacks can be carried three ways - as a backpack or as a sling pack using a single strap worn over the right shoulder or the left shoulder. There are also three ways to access your equipment using Tamrac's Triple Access System

When worn as a backpack, the two foam-padded shoulder straps, waist belt, and chest strap distribute the weight. For quick access to equipment, slip off one shoulder strap, swing the pack around to the front, and open the side door to access a DSLR with a lens attached.

To get to additional equipment, swing the pack around to the opposite shoulder and open the side door on the other side of the pack. Inside both side doors are two convenient memory card pockets and a pocket to store lens caps while shooting.

lens caps while shooting. To convert the Evolution Series backpacks to sling packs, cross-connect a single shoulder strap, red to red for carrying on the right shoulder or blue to blue for carrying on the left shoulder. The other shoulder strap is easily tucked away.

When the packs are removed, all gear can be accessed through the door to the main compartment. The internal dividers are foam-padded and adjustable. A Windowpane-Mesh accessory pocket inside the front door is ideal for keeping small accessories visible and organized. The foam-padded top compartment provides storage for a light jacket, lunch or other photo accessories. A mesh pocket in the back keeps small accessories separate and secure, while a Windowpane-Mesh pocket on the inside door panel holds additional small items.

The Evolution Series packs feature Tamrac's QuickClip Tripod Attachment System with a Tripod Foot Pocket, allowing a compact tripod to be easily attached and carried. Each side has a zipper-closing pocket for accessories like a phone or iPod. The right pocket contains a removable rain cover, which can be slipped over the packs during extreme weather.

The 5788 Evolution 8 also holds most 15.6" screen laptops in a separate pocket that allows quick access without disturbing photo gear. Lash tabs on the bottoms provide an attachment point for tying on extra equipment.
