I bought this laptop for my daughter. She needed an i5 or higher for her photography work. No complaints so far, she is very happy with it.

I was on the fence between buying this computer or a 15.6" desktop replacement with optical drive. The description of this product suggested a 2.6GHz dual core processor, so I figured I could live without the preloaded Windows 8 and some of the other features of a 15.6"I-5 in favor of its small form-factor. In fact, it is a 1.7Ghz processor that claims turbo boost up to 2.6Ghz. This computer does allow several configs of extended desktop, (netbook's equipped with "atom" processors don't) which I consider essential to my own computing process. It is much faster than my netbook and seems to be a satisfactory middleground between a netbook and a desktop replacement, the processor is dual core but only 1.7Ghz which puts it in a category (IMO) below 'desktop replacement.' I have the peripherals (monitor, wireless kb, optical drives) so that I can do almost everything I can do with my 2009 quad-core desktop, but editing video is probably twice as slow. For this reason (+the false advertising)and for having to uninstall a bunch of bloatware, I downgraded my rating from 5 stars to 3. I still 'recommend"ed it because it is hard to find a computer this small, this fast, with as many features for <$500.

This was a great laptop at a great price to replace my older Asus netbook. Pros: -Windows 7 (Windows 8 seems like it is fraught with problems, plus I don't care about touchscreen features; you can upgrade for cheap is you really need it) -6GB of RAM (plenty of power and easily upgradable) -500 GB Hard Drive (more than enough space) -Good ports (has 2 USB 2.0, 1 USB 3.0 which is backwards compatible with USB 2.0, HDMI, VGA + Audio, SD Card Reader). -Has camera and built-in mic. -Can playback 1080p HD videos pretty easily. -Small and lightweight (11.6" screen and ~3 lbs. -Intel Core i5-3317U (step up from the i3! and pretty decent bang for the buck) Cons: -Screen is glossy (you probably don't want to be working on this thing in an area with too much sun or a dark desktop background. There may be products you can get like a screen protector that may reduce this). -Battery (maybe lasts 4-5 hrs on minimal settings like low brightness and not doing too much at once). -Bloatware (when you get it, you'll do a lot of uninstalling...) Overall, I've been extremely happy with this. It is a huge step up from my older netbook!

The Acer Aspire V5-171-6616 11.6" Notebook (Silver) is a light and lean computing machine for great value. Thin as it is, the V5 still packs potent power and graphics. It features an optical drive and handy LAN/VGA combo port, while they all promise cool-to-the-touch comfort. The Acer Aspire V5-171-6616 also features slimmed-down mobile convenience in 11.6" screen size that is easy to carry and use. The chassis is light on the go and smart airflow keeps it cool to the touch.
