Works great

Inexpensive add-on that updates firmware on your RX remote receivers, ELC HD PRO units. Also fires flash on Universal remotes. Using Elinchroms free PC/MAC studio software you can set up and identify individual lights and design studio layouts. This is the USB unit that you can update the WiFi controller too. I use the USB unit, WiFi unit and my iPhone connected to the Elinchrom WiFi to control all my lights. Impressed my clients while on an outdoor shoot that me iPhone controlled all my lights (using the WioFi unit).. If you use the WiFi, get bthe USB unit too. Its inexpensive and you can design and save setups and layouts.

Works flawless

Bought this to replace the one that I accidentally dropped and shattered. Seems sturdier then the previous model I had. (Approx 6 years old). It is lighter and more compact. Works perfectly with the old receiver.

Simple item

Does what it says. It's a simple unit. I had one for almost a year and it died. I'm on my second one now. A bit pricy for such a simple piece of plastic with a circuit board. Main complaint is that there is no tension screw to hold it in the hot shoe. It just slides in. Seems like it could fall out, however it never has. Triggers my 5 D-light's just fine

BEWARE...

Beware of the Skyport Speed hype if you own Elinchrom's top-of-the-line Style RX lights. Although Elinchrom doesn't come out and say it, there is NO WAY to obtain Speed functionality with the Style RX lights. You are condemned to a sync speed of 1/200 MAX (with slight shadowing from shutter). You end up shooting at 1/160 max for even lighting. Not an issue in a portrait studio, but for fashion, creative, or technical work, forget it! Although Elinchrom COULD fix this with a simple improvement to the RX receiver, they are declining to do so. Funny, their cheaper BxRi lights are Speed-functional and will give good quality 1/250(and some claim 1/320) sync. If you're stuck with Elis, go with the PocketWizards and ST4s... If you haven't bought lights yet, consider that the Skyport isn't as flexible as Elinchrom claims, and other manufacturers have better construction and similar (or better) light quality. Note: There is a claim that use of the Skyport USB transmitter and Skyport software will allow for Speed functionality with Style RX lights. This is not true.

Pros and Cons.....

I bought one of these as a back up to the one received with the Quadra unit. Works just fine and have never had a mis fire in over 1000 shots fired. The receiver was easily adapted to other studio flashes without any dramas. Just need the proper cable adaptors, which we already had on hand in the studio. However, they are very poor in construction quality, cheap fragile plastic (even feels cheap). I have had two of them break already, and I was unlucky enough to have them break right at the connection pin, so they are rendered useless at the moment (until I figure out a way to rig them up for emergency use). If you are using the Elinchrom equipment configured with the built in sky port, then they are very nice to use because of the functions onboard the triggers. If using with other brands of flash, probably best to go with pocket wizards or something else, as the quality is much better.

Simple setup, works fine

I used the product with my Nkon D700 and Speedotron lights on high speed. I found I could go down to about 1/320 sec shutter speed before I got shutter vignetting. For static, light tent photography where the receiver has a clear line of sight to the transmitter, everything worked perfectly. It was great not having an extra cable floating around. Much cleaner. When I moved into a stairway to shoot a child climbing the stairs towards an object and used the strobes in a room on the upper floor to light the ceiling for a hi key effect, I had a couple of no-fires. Part of this was no doubt due to recycle time, but I had some black first shots in a sequence that was clearly the transmitter and the unit not reading each other. In all fairness, I had the receiver on the floor and a few bodies in the way, so some more careful planning would help communication.

Good and bad

I've been using elinchrom receivers for about 6 months now and have good and bad things to say. The good side is that they work most of the time. They are small and compact to fit in any bag. I have 4 groups with 4 channels to work with in case I need to separate the light. The transceiver has switch for groups or to shoot all together. The bad part is the construction of this. Thanks to the plastic and not-so-good construction, I now have 'krazy glue' in my bag all the time. I've already glued the transceiver 3 times where the main unit connects with the hot shoe connector (almost lost the connector pin!). I also have a number of mis-fires with these units in a controlled studio environment. My suggestion is to wait for Pocket Wizard III to come out and get that

Works great out of the box.

Good: -Easy to use -Intuitive design -Compact -No misfires -Comes with case to keep all items together -New version has LEDs on both units -New version of transmitter can now be tightened to hotshoe Bad: -No cable for Nikon speedlight in kit Only having to attach the transmitter to the hotshoe of my D80 and the receiver to my Whitelightning 1600 I was ready to go in seconds. Not a single misfire yet however I haven't tested many situations or distances. I've heard people complain about how hard it is to set the transmission code on the tiny switches on the units and all can say is these are dip switches and that's how they are suppose to be. You rarely change these settings and don't want to move them accidentally. Like the previous version of this set it is missing a commonly needed cable to connect the receiver to certain flash units. This seems odd to me because of all the things people complained about with the old version this would have been the easiest for Elinchrom to resolve. Anyway, nothing a trip to the electronics store won't fix.

Works well for the ECO or Economy

This trigger works well with the Dlite 4 kits that I got. Did not take very long to get working and is consistent and reliable. Only has 4 channels and does not do groupings like the other model. If saving $ is a priority, then this is the trigger to get. But if you need the groupings...this is not going to suite you.
