Questions & Answers

Shopper : How does a square filter attatch to a round lens?MARK N : You have to have a O ring adapter for the camera. The one I purhcased was from Cokin. You need to know the lens size. It is usually printed on the inside of the lens cap.WILLIAM R. H : You need to use a Cokin P-Series Filter Holder and an 85mm adapter ring for the size of your lens. With this system you can fully adjust the filter to the situation. Do a search for Cokin Filter Systems and you will find a lot of information on using them and what you need. I would use the Hitech filters though. The Cokin are not as good and leave a color cast to pictures. Their holders are much cheaper then the Lee holders though and work well. Hope this helps! HutchSTEPHEN B : You can use a filter holder such as those made by Cokin and others to hold the filter and an adapter ring to mount the holder to your specific lens. Alternatively you can also hand hold the filter in front of the lens. Do a search on this site or the internet for "filter holder"CRAIG M : You have two options. 1) Use a filter holder. It screws onto your lens and holds a square filter in front of your lens. (See Cokin Filter Holder SKU: CKBPP on this website, as an example.) Some holders alow more than one filter to be used at the same time. If you are in a situation where you are finding yourself taking filters on an off to handle changing lighting conditions, these types of filters are great because you can shoot with the holder on with no filter loaded, yet easily slide a filter into the holder when needed. This is much more convenient than screwing filters on and off. Also, when using split filters, you can easily adjust where you want to place the line between dark and light in your frame, something not possible with circular screw-on filters. 2) If you find yourself using a tripod most of the time and only need a single filter, you can simply hold the filter by the edges flush to the front of your lens and shoot. I own holders for rare occasions when I use more than one filter or shoot hand-held, but mostly I employ option 2.TRI V : You need the Cokin Holder P Series and the corresponding adapter depending on your lens filter thread
REYNALD B : Will this fit a lee holder system? thanksMARK N : I do not know if the filters will fit the lee sysyem. I purchased the Cokin holder, P Series.MARK N : I recently completed a short course on landscape photography in the Rocky Mountain National Park. The instructor swore by these filters and lens attachment. We took a series of pictures with any without the use of the filter. I was amazed at the difference. Upon my return I order the system for myself and used it in some photos taken in the Caribbean. What great shots. Using these filters have taken my photo skills to a new level and I like the ease of use these filters offer.WILLIAM R. H : Works perfect on the Cokin p series holder. I can't say if it fits the Lee, I don't own one.

Rated 5 out of 5

2 stops when you need it

Having this graduated neutral density filter is a great addition to my bag. It is large enough to hand hold if needed and the quality is good. This filter takes just enough off to keep highlights in check. For more extreme conditions, I also have the 4 stop version.

Soft Edge ND grads feature a neutral gray effect at the top of the filter that gradually transitions to clear at the center of the filter. The main function of a graduated ND is to balance the luminosity of the sky to the terrain below. The soft edge grad is the most popular and most versatile grad Formatt-Hitech makes because it's easy to blend the gradual transition into an undulating horizon. Formatt-Hitech filters are made from the highest quality 1.5mm optical resin.

Graduated Neutral Density
Graduated filters have an effect that occurs on one area of the filter and transitions to clear on other areas of the filter. Typically graduated filters are used to enhance the sky or terrain, or balance the luminosity of the sky to the luminosity of the terrain. Grads are also available in a variety of colors.

Soft Edge Grads
Soft Edge graduated filters transition across the filter toward the center, and although there is a horizon line, it is subtle. This allows for horizon transitions to be more easily hidden in a scene, especially with an undulating horizon line such as mountains, buildings or trees.

The Soft Edge grad is the ideal tool for balancing bright sky to a dark terrain where the horizon is uneven. Soft Edge grads are essential for both fine art photographers and professional cinematographers alike, and are the most popular grads Formatt-Hitech makes.

Formatt-Hitech Resin
Formatt-Hitech's resin filters are ultra flat, have excellent contrast and are completely transparent to the visible light spectrum. Formatt-Hitech's resin has the highest scratch resistance of any non-glass optical material and it's resistant to most solvents, chemicals, aging and material fatigue. Because of the ruggedness, light weight and portability, resin filters are a great choice for photographers and HDSLR filmmakers. Resin filters are dyed using Formatt-Hitech's exclusive Absorbing Cell Technology process.
