SHEILA G : What is the benefit of using the cube versus the colorchecker card? Which one is better to have?ALLISON A : This SpyderCube is simply for white balance. I do not have the color checker you mentioned so I'm afraid I cannot answer your question. The advantage of this Spyder is that it's small. The disadvantage of this is that it's small. :)BOB F : I haven't actually used the colorchecker, but I have been reading about it. It's similar to the cube, as it is primarily for use in post processing. However, I understand it is more precise if you need to match a specific color. I like my cube, and I use it all the time!JOHN H : I don't own the colorchecker card, but the SpyderCube helps with adjusting highlights and black points with the silver ball and the black hole on the bottom (within the black surface). It also has two gray surfaces so you can try either one when adjusting white balance. In mixed lighting you'll get a different result from each surface.JERI L : The dimensions of the cube better reflect light than the flat cards. Better exposure readings, especially if you're shooting B&Ws of people or nature.SEAN A : The colorchecker can't give you the darkest "true" black. The cube can.JONATHAN P : I'd use both as they do different things, spyder cube lets you calibrate blacks/whites/grays, you're messing with exporsure, highlights, shadows, etc. the colorchecker calibrates colors, saturation, hues, etc.JONATHAN P : 1) color checker is 2d, this is 3d. 2) silver ball for specular highlights 3) true black in the hole so you've got your subject, a light on the left at 45 degrees and a light on the right at 30 degrees, a flat (2d) color checker just allows you to color calibrate, because the spydercube is 3d, you get white/gray from both sides, silver for highlights, black and true black and no, I don't work for datacolor, but yes, I do have this item.

Good for setting white and black levels, no so much for white balance.

The Datacolor SpyderCube 3D Cube is good for setting white and black levels. However it is not suitable for setting white balance as faces, white, grey, and black are not neutral and have a visible color cast.

Lightweight, portable, but confusing.

I can't say it's a bad product, but I can't say that it's good either. Maybe I'm not as good at understanding directions as I think I am! I have yet to figure out how to use it correctly. It's very easy to do what the instructions say to do, but I can't seem to get the result that I need. I'm an amateur photographer which could be why I'm having difficulty but I feel I understand Lightroom and Photoshop very well. I have to assume that I'm not understanding what to do. I haven't contacted Adorama for assistance yet so this review is a little unfair to them, but I felt that my initial experience should be noted. The cube is small and lightweight making it easy to transport and is easy to use to capture different lighting. It's only adjusting the photo that is confusing. I would still order the product again with hopes that I will understand it and be able to use it properly.

I like that I can use it anywhere for the most part. It fits in my pocket just in case I forget my gray cards. Also, the smallest gray card I have is 12x12 inches. I do shooting in a white box for small items, so this fits just right.
