Rich looking glossy paper, slight texture gives in a fine art feel.

Exceptionally good tonal range and color richness on this glossy photo paper. The slight surface texture on the otherwise glossy surface gives it good reflective qualities in gallery situations where pearl and luster surface papers tend to look hazy. The texture gives the surface just enough character to avoid the mechanistic feel of a mirror gloss surface, while still yielding deep looking blacks and sparkly highlights. The surface works especially well for landscapes and portraits. A high quality icc profile yields a white point of 98 and a black point of just over 1 on my Canon iPF8300 printer. Tonal separation in the darkest areas is excellent, and if you are a careful worker highlights can appear very bright. The 15 mil thickness is a little less than many comparable papers. This helps avoid head strikes from edge curl and longitudinal curl which is often a problem with thicker media. Quality control is excellent. This paper underwent some mechanical changes about a year ago, but all recent batches have been consistent. All in all a very rich looking and pleasant to use paper that feeds though my Canon printer with no problems, even in low winter humidity levels. One of the most satisfactory and least troublesome medias I have ever used. The surface takes lacquer coatings such as Premier Print Shield very well, with as little as single coat offering good mechanical protection from aggressive wiping with a wet cloth. Even uncoated prints are scratch resistant enough to survive in less than gentle production environments. Proofing for this expensive paper can done relatively accurately on Epson Premium Luster or Gloss, in so far as overall density and tonal distribution go. The main difference is that Silver Rag will yield slightly richer tonality in the darks and midrange, and brigher and better separated highlights. Of course for such proofing to be meaningful you need accurate profiles for both papers, done at the same time and on the same profiling gear.

Great paper

Just like air-dried old style Kodak fibre based paper.
