Response to Shotman Review

Your comments do not apply to the P7800 camera. It has an entirely different lens cover system than does the camera you cite. Adorama should remove your deceptive review. I give it my rating because of the limitations of the optical viewfinder and the removal of the controls made by Nikon to position the viewfinder.

Capable little camera

I spent a long time researching a small camera that would allow me to leave my SLRs at home until there was a money-making assignment. Everything I read about this camera said that this is the one, but tepid reviews made me wonder if I had missed something. When I found a refurbished P7800 at Adorama, a company I dealt with regularly and trust I thought, "It's time to jump." I am very happy with this little camera. Every day I master some other feature that helps me make the photos I've been missing simply because carrying thousands of dollars worth of gear when not on assignment. You gotta have the camera to get the picture.

Great, Feature-Packed Point and Shoot

I bought this camera to take on motorcycle trips since I often find my DSLR too big to pack. This camera is a great choice. It is packed with capabilities and features. It has a very good zoom lens and is customizable in many ways. It has a very solid feel that tells me it'll hold up to traveling in my bike's saddlebag. If I had any complaint, it would be that the RAW mode files are not compatible with the software I use (Corel AfterShot Pro). Not a big issue as I probably won't be shooting RAW with this point and shoot anyway.

Nikon P7800 Specifications

About Nikon P7800

With the Nikon P7800, Nikon has added an essential ingredient to this small camera designed for serious photographers. Nikon has added an electronic eye-level viewfinder. Unlike the dinky little squintfinders that covered not quite 70% of the image and were on some of the P7800's predecessors and which can still be found on one or two competitors, the P7800's 921k high-resolution finder covers 100% of the scene so you can compose precisely. Unlike the optical finder, it does this while still allowing room for a 3-inch, fully articulated LCD monitor.

In addition to the new viewfinder, the Nikon Coolpix P7700 features a magnesium-alloy body and is fronted by a glass 7.1x zoom lens that covers 28-200mm (35mm equivalent), the same focal range as its predecessor, but with a faster f/2.0-4 wide aperture range. Lens-Shift Vibration Reduction is said to minimize camera shake. In Macro Close-Up mode, the lens focuses to within an inch.

Full Manual Control
The Nikon Coolpix P7800 offers full manual exposure control as well as shutter- and aperture priority and program modes. The camera also has 19 Scene Modes and a Scene Auto mode that automatically selects the most appropriate mode based on the shooting situation. In-camera special effects include Nostalgic Sepia, Vivid, and Painting. A noise reduction filter is available for low-light/higher ISO shooting. Another low-light option is consecutive shot combining, which combines a sequence of ima ge s to reduce noise, or HDR to increase dynamic range. The ISO range is 80-1600, boostable to 6400. There are three custom modes so you can quickly switch to your most frequently-used settings.

The Nikon P7800 can capture full 1080p HD video, and video exposure can be controlled using auto, manual, aperture-priority or custom movie mode. Autofocus is active while shooting videos, and the P7700 offers both a built-in stereo microphone and an external microphone jack and an HDMI mini connector and HDMI-CEC support.

The Nikon Coolpix P7800 is a true system compact, compatible with the Nikon Creative Lighting System, in addition to a built-in pop-up flash. The P7800 supports wireless lighting by controlling Nikon Speedlights (the Nikon SB-910 and Nikon SB-700) wirelessly via a master unit and remote unit group. The hot shoe can also accommodate the Nikon GP-1 GPS unit or Nikon ME-1 external stereo mic. A new Wireless Mobile Adapter WU-1a, allows users to share images online via their iOS or Android device using a free Nikon app.
