Street /Travel and Architecture
I bought this lens and the A7CR specifically for travel and Street photography. Ive probably made a mistake buying the 40mm lens and perhaps I should have bought something like a 24mm or perhaps 35mm...I found myself struggling with some of the architecture I wanted to shoot. Ive already got a 26-70GM but thought it a little too heavy and conspicuous to do what I wanted to do..

Great day to say lens
I brought this to use on my Sony A7CR as my day to day camera I tried all three lens and found the 40mm to be the best With 80mp you can still crop and have a great quality photo

Small and light, great for street photography

Amazing image quality from this compactl ens
Although I own the superlative 50mm f1.4 GM lens, I find myself using the 50mm f2.5 G more as its its IQ is so good (and I rarely need f1.4, but it's nice to have that option for certain assignments). The 50mm f2.5G makes a great street and travel lens, even for landscapes too, especially when paired with my A7Cii and, usefully, takes excellent portraits also. Thanks to the high mega pixel count of the A7Cii, using the camera's APSC crop facility (which I have operated to conveniently come on and off via the lens focus hold button), I can turn this 50mm lens into a 75mm lens for close-up portraits with additional background blur (bokeh). When photographing young children being natural, using more compact lenses like this is less intrusive for catching unexpected moments in time. Thanks Sony for producing such brilliant lenses for your cameras!

Best one prime solution
If I could only have one prime lens on my Sony bodies, this would be it. Compact size, great ergonomics, sharp, beautiful rendering and a versatile focal length. Short of an RX1R, this the one-prime solution. Love it. The 24mm G is excellent, too. Now all we need is an FE 85mm/2.5 G and I can duplicate my favorite travel kit of sharp, tiny DA limited primes from the Pentax years, but this time in gorgeous full frame. Get on it, Sony.

Sharp, compact, lightweight, beautiful design
Extremely sharp wide open, the center is already optimal from f/2.5 and the corners barely improve from stopping down. It is weightless when mounted on a camera, the ligthest lens i've known. The build quality it top notch, the focus ring is like using a real manual focus lens and the aperture ring is very satisfying and useful. AF is extremely fast and silent. Very happy overall!

Small issue, huge improvement over FE 50mm 1.8
I have a Sony A7RII, typically using the 24-105 f/4 G OSS which I love. The first lens I had was the FE 50mm 1.8 standard, which is definitely a budget lens. The autofocus on the FE 50mm 2.5 G is extremely fast with no hunting. The visual quality is great, but there is a small dot on the inside of the last element, which I'm sure hinders quality and sharpness a bit. Overall, I'm disappointed with the flaw, but I still find this lens extremely useful with the option for manual aperture changes. The size is great, and it's an awesome lens for travel. The small hood that is delivered with this lens is a bit strange, but I do like that it's metal, and tough. It does allow for a UV filter/protector to be installed as well.

Great Lens

I have recently started to use prime lenses because of the sharp photos they produce and because they tend to be much more compact than zooms. This focal length is perfect in my opinion, not too wide and not too tight. A very good lens indeed.

Great Lens

An excellent little lens, and so sharp.
I bought this for when I needed slightly wider than 50mm, for when I shoot portraits, as I already have the 50mm f1.8, and the 40mm is compact and really sharp.

One compact and good quality lens

Fantastic all round travel lens

Best color for a plein aire painter
I'm using an Alpha 7c for its full frame and raw format. I generally paint images within a 100 feet and I'm tried of taking photos that average the color I see. With the programing in the Alpha 7c and this lens, I can capture those variations and highlights that make my paintings without a lot of notes. Lens with a lot of glass and optics don't.

Sharp lens
I purchased this lens from Wex and I had a great experience with this firm. The lady who served me in Cambridge was patient, polite, and extremely helpful. The lens is lightweight and very sharp and versatile having close distance focusing.

Lovely little lens
I really like my FE 40mm f2.5 G lens, it's my main walkabout lens. I prefer 40mm to both 35mm and 50mm. This Sony lens is lovely, it feels great in the hand, it is small, light weight and very is sharp. Its also really nice to have a proper aperture ring. Thoroughly recommended.

GREAT GENERAL PURPOSE LENS
Excellent build quality. I love the focus hold button, aperture ring, smooth action and the (slightly wide angle) view. Great optics and f2.5 is a great compromise between cost and a wide aperture. Recommended.

This standard prime lens packs the high image quality and beautiful bokeh of the G Lens into a compact design with superb build quality and intuitive operability. Easily carried anywhere and anytime, it's ideal for snap-shooting both portraits and views around town. The fast, precise, and quiet AF is ideal for shooting both stills and movies, ensuring capture of those vital moments.
A matching set of portable primes
This is one of our G Lens primes (sold separately), offering different focal lengths but the same external look, 49-mm filter diameter, compact design, and layout. They're compact enough to carry all three, so you're ready for great shots across a range of scenes and subjects, and the similar weight even makes gimbal rebalancing easy.
Intuitive, metal design and clear optics
The metal (aluminum) finish of the lens body and hood, plus the engraved focal length and aperture markings, emphasize a superb build quality. The ultra-compact lightweight design, the high image quality of the G Lens, the aperture ring, and Linear Response MF deliver intuitive operability that makes shooting a pleasure.
Compact and lightweight for constant carrying and comfortable shooting
The mechanical design takes maximum advantage of state-of-the-art optics with an effective layout of three aspherical lens elements, and the short flange back unique to mirrorless cameras, to realize stunning compactness and a weight of only 6.2 oz (173 g). The lens is ideal for shooting snaps around town, or movie shooting with a gimbal. Mobility is delivered by the compact design that matches both full-frame and APS-C bodies.
High corner-to-corner image quality from state-of-the-art optics
High image quality is realized by state-of-the-art optics using three aspherical elements, delivering high resolution in all parts of the image. The aspherical elements compensate for various aberrations, delivering high-resolution performance from corner to corner of the image, even from the widest aperture with shallow depth of field.
Beautiful natural bokeh
A 7-blade circular aperture is provided, with precise control of the spherical aberration that affects bokeh, delivering the beautiful natural bokeh of the G Lens.
Double linear motors for fast, precise, and quiet AF
Two linear motors deliver fast, precise AF with superb tracking performance that maximizes camera body performance to capture vital moments in street snaps and the like. The fast, precise, quiet AF with superb tracking performance is ideal for shooting movies as well as stills.
Excellent close-up performance
A minimum focus distance of 1.15 ft (35 cm) (AF) / 1.02 ft (31 cm) (MF) and magnification of 0.18x (AF) / 0.21x (MF) make the lens useful in many situations like table photography or shooting close-ups of flowers or small objects you find around town with a blurred background that makes the subject stand out.
High operability and reliability in a compact design
Despite its compact size, the lens provides a focus hold button, focus mode switch, aperture ring, aperture click switch, and Linear Response MF for intuitive operability and comfortable shooting. The metal (aluminum) exterior finish of the lens body and hood contributes to reliability through increased strength and durability. The design is also dust- and moisture-resistant2, providing reliability in harsh outdoor shooting environments.
