Powerful and not available anymore

Fairly high power, tracks with the zoom lens settings. Works well with the Canon 40D. The bounce card included to give nice catch lights while getting a broad light for portraits.

Great Beginner Flash

This has everything I could want in a flash. It's the first external flash I've used, and I couldn't be happier with my decision. I had looked at the Sony HVL-F43 and for what I wanted it for (better illumination for indoor shots), the specs were similar. For about $100 less, this one has more power and all the same features I was looking for: Bounce/swivel head, TTL/ADI control, High Speed Sync. It took about 10 minutes of staring at it and flipping through the manual to figure out all I needed to know about it, and my indoor shots were immediately better. There are enough little tricks and treats to keep me busy and trying new things with it for a long time before I start looking for bigger and better things.

Good Aftermarket Flash For Sony Alpha

I purchased this flash after returning a Sigma unit that flopped around on the shoe of my Sony a200, so I was a little apprehensive about giving another aftermarket flash a try, but the fit of the Metz is very good. It's worth noting that the foot of this flash isn't metal on the Sony model, but the wheel makes a nice tight connection. The build quality is acceptable, all the moving parts fit well, and the swivel head feels nice and smooth, the head locks into position with a nice click. The buttons on the back feel nice and firm also. The power of this unit is impressive, I used it the first weekend I had it at an outdoor wedding for fill and the pictures came out great. The bounce functionality is also very good. I left the flash on TTL all day and had great results. My only real complaint is the recycling time. With NiMH rechargeables after about 50 shots the recycling time was about 4 seconds, not terrible by any means, but not fast enough to shoot in bursts, which I could do when the batteries were fully charged. I've also used it off-camera, triggered by the Sony's pop-up flash, and no problems there. The controls for manual mode were easy to figure out without having to re-read the manual. If it came with a stand or case I would give 5 stars, but as-is it is a solid 4.

A lot of flash for the buck

Still gettting familiar with it, but for the price it will do the job, since I don't use flash all that often. Still figuring out how to use as fill flash outdoors as it seems almost a little too powerful for close-in portrait work, while still on camera.

very good ....

Input power is slightly increased to a guide number of 50. His new diffuser covers more angular, covering up to 12 mm focal. Other features are the way high-speed sync, manual with power adjustable in eight steps and a recharge time of 0.1 to 3.5 seconds, according to the power of the flash and the battery. The most interesting may be the ability to work wirelessly both in slave mode, controlled by the master of the camera, as in servo mode working for free, allowing us to do more creative photographs. Another thing I like most of the Metz flash is incorporating a USB port to update the firmware every time you leave a new model of camera so you can continue using it in the future.

Excellent product

It's great for portraits, or as additional light. What it need is a battery level meter.

serious power

This is a great flash, has plenty of power as well. My only (very slight) complaint would be it's recycling time. Typically the flash is ready to fire again in about 3 seconds. Other than that- it's great and for the money, you can't beat it. :)

Don't miss this sleeper!!!

This German made flash is solid as my SB-28,SB-24 and costs less than half Nikons SB-900.Don't go for the cheaper made brands!!This METZ is the real deal.It has as much power as my Nikon SB-28,I checked them both with flash meter, with them on manual, perfect match.Don't waste your money on the Nikons or the cheaper imports. You will not regret it.Oh by the way the METZ-50AF-1 integrates with my Nikon D-200 perfectly. The TTL exposures are "dead bang" on.

Works like it should

It works on the camera and has TTL and ADI capabilities. Better yet it works off the camera via the Sony wireless system also with TTL capabilities. The head auto zooms. It will bounce and swivel. It also has a small built in bounce card and a pull out diffuser for on camera flash with lenses between 24mm & 18mm focal length. I am happy with it, but I wish they did include a flash stand for off camera use.
