About Nikon ZR
The Nikon ZR blends a compact cinema body with RED and Nikon features, creating one of the most powerful compact cameras on the market today. This camera is the world’s first full-frame 6K cinema camera capable of capturing REDCODE RAW footage that allows creators to use the same color space and Log curve seen in RED cameras. The ZR is an excellent choice for lone-wolf videographers or as a B-camera on RED production sets, or anywhere else where a compact setup is invaluable.
6K/60p Recording
6K/60p recording in 12-bit R3D RAW or 4K/120p recording in DX crop mode is available with the option to record 1080/240p as well. The Nikon ZR features a 24.5 megapixel full-frame sensor that is primarily known for its impressive video capabilities but can also be used to capture photos for hybrid creators. 15+ stops of dynamic range, with a native ISO range of 100-64000, can be fully expanded to ISO 204,800. For video, the camera uses a dual native ISO system with base ISOs of 800 and 6400, which can provide low-noise results even in low ambient light.
Bright In-Camera Display
A 4” fully articulating touchscreen that is up to 1000-nits and contains 3.07 million dots is bright and beautiful, perfect for monitoring footage even in the brightest of light. This display is one of the largest found on any camera in its class, giving it a significant edge over most competitors. The display flips automatically when you switch between shooting in horizontal or vertical orientation.
32-Bit Float Audio
High-quality 32-bit float and 24-bit recording supports standard 48 kHz linear PCM for full video compatibility. The Nikon ZR itself comes equipped with configurable mics with five directional patterns and a line input that allows usage of an external microphone.
RED Technology in a Nikon Body
Nikon acquired RED in April of 2024, and this camera leverages some of the best technology Nikon has to offer, combined with RED’s highly acclaimed color science, to create a compact cinema body that can be used alongside Netflix-approved workflows. REDCODE RAW R3D NE recording is available alongside Nikon N-RAW ProRes RAW HQ/422 HQ and compressed H.264 and H.265 codecs. Using REDCODE RAW allows the use of the same color space and log curve seen on RED cameras commonly used on professional movie sets.
Z-Mount Lens Compatibility
The ZR can be paired with any Nikon Z-mount lens and many third-party lenses and adapters, and can provide up to 7.5 stops of in-body stabilization. For shooters already using Nikon’s mirrorless system, there is no need to purchase additional lenses for the Nikon ZR. This also means that this camera is compatible with a slew of Nikon mirrorless accessories, including camera cages, microphones, handheld accessories, and more. Current Nikon shooters don’t need to reinvent their lineup to make use of this compact cinema camera.
