Questions & Answers

Thomas C : are the tiffen ND filters adaptable to all lenses??im putting this on a tamron 17-50GREG K : It should. This is a 67mm filter and I believe that lens uses that size filter. Each lens accepts a certain sized filter and there are numerous different sizes.ROBERT R : The 67mm does fit on my Tamron 17-50 which is a 67mm lense, I also bought adapters for 62mm & 52mm so I can use it on my other lenses, works very wellGREG T : You will need to check the size of the filter thread. I believe the 17-50 has a 67mm thread so the Tiffen 67mm ND filter should fit.DAVID T : So long as the filter thread diameter matches, then yes, it will fit. However, be aware that there could be a conflict in using this with the Tamron 17-50. Depending on the configuration of this ultra wide angle lens and the camera on which it is being used, you could experience vignetting in the corners of the frame due to the projection of the filter extending into the field of view. This is far more likely on full frame than on crop frame, and if you are stacking this ND filter on top of a UV or other protective filter.
Shopper : Can I stack a CPL in front of 67mm ND filter, are there threads at the other end of nd filter?Tiron B : Yes it's possible, but watch out as for a 67mm ND filter the mount in front is 77mm!PING W : Yes and yes.
Shopper : How is this filter variable, or how is it adjusted? (I'm new at this) Thanks... MikeGENARO S : I use the Tiffen 67mm variable ND filter with my Nikon D7000. When using a 18-70mm DX lens there is a little vignetting when the lens is a wide open. I have also found that filter front threats are 77mm. With that in mind you need to purchase a 77mm screw-on lens hood. The lens hood that comes with my 18-70mm DX lens doesn't work. Other than indicated the ND filter works great! Good luck with your purchase.JOHN F : You simply turn the ring, just like polarizer filter. You should first focus your lens manually with the filter set at 2-stops and then adjust the filter to the amount of ND you want. It's difficult to find focus if your viewfinder is darkened by the VND filter. Needless to say, your camera should be securely mounted on a tripod and you should use a remote shutter release.TIMOTHY S : It rotates like a circular polarizer.ANDREW R : The action is similar to a polarizing filter. It is rotated to adjust the density.

I'm glad I trusted Tiffen and so should you!

It installs without a hitch. It is simple to rotate, control, and is clearly marked. There are no problems as long as you remain inside the indicated minimum and maximum. I like to take long exposures at sunrise and sunset, and I set it to the lowest setting to let just enough light through to enable auto-focus before moving it to the desired location. I haven't noticed any glitches or a decline in quality anywhere. I highly recommend this ND filter.

It works but has some issues.

Works pretty well, but adds a little haze to video (tough to correct) and creates the dreaded VND "X" pretty early compared to its (much more expensive) counter-parts. Works well for a budget ND, but I feel like there are cheaper options that work as well or better. I'll be upgrading this year.

Excellent for all lighting conditions

I love the versatility of this graduating filter. I can shoot long exposure in all lighting conditions. The coating is a little challenging to clean but even with a few smears I don’t really notice it in my images

Good Variable ND to start with

This is my first time using a ND filter. This is a great lens for someone to experiment with with out having to pay a bunch of money. I took a bunch of photos of the ocean at dusk and they came out great

Tiffen Variable Neutral Density Filter

I was very hesitant to buy a Neutral Density filter. I read good reviews about this on, so I bought it. I am pleased with it. It lengthen the shutter speed which is important for photos in full sun or even at night.

Filter is variable, impressions are solid.

I've gotten to use this product several times and I love it. The initial feeling and build quality is sturdy and moves smoothly. I like the variance in stops of light it provides. If I had something negative to say, and why I rated it 4 stars is some of the black cross hatching kind of stuff that happens but it's rare and with video I don't have the problem, just shooting wide photographs. Overall quality is great, photos come out clear on my A7RIII. I would and have recommended this variable ND filter.

Perfect for the Nikon P1000

I bought this to use with my Nikon P1000 which can only stop down to f8, and adjusts the shutter speed to compensate. So filming 100 ISO at 25 fps at 1/50 in bright daylight is impossible without an ND filter. The variable ND was my starting point for this camera as I needed something I could work with fast and I also trust Tiffen's stuff. I initially bought a cheap filter from a box store while I waited for Adorama to finish Passover to ship and needed something urgently. That variable ND was horrendous and left big purple splashes that looked like horrible birthmarks on the image and you couldn't use it at it's marked maximum or even one stop under max. The Tiffen on the other hand works flawlessly. The only drawback I see is there's a little polarization so the windows at work look smudged.

62mm variable ND Filter

I would recommend this ND filter. It is nicely built. Feels solid and moves smooth. Nice and clear glass. Was taking photos in the snow and it was working great. Just past max or right at max you get the x but it’s to be expected. Nice filter.

Essential gear

As video becomes more frequent and easier to use, we learn about the nuances of creating quality work in that medium. One of the standards is to make your work cinematic, rather than video - film-like rather than tv soap opera or newsy. This filter allows that, by giving you the ability to set your camera at film settings - 24fps and 1/48 shutter speed (60fps and 1/120 for slow mo) - known at the 180* rule. Often 24fps at 1/48th of a second means you have too much light for a proper exposure. Some cameras don't let you adjust for that by lowering the ISO far enough, and maybe more importantly, when you compensate by setting the f-stop higher, you loose the nice (and cinematic) bokeh background. The best option is this variable ND, which allows you to dial in how much light you need to cut (like putting on progressively darker sunglasses) for a proper exposure, without worrying about any of those other adjustments. Yes it's good for still photo work, for some of the same reasons, but it essential gear for videographers looking for a high quality cinematic look.

Tiffen Variable ND

By Rich

This is a great product. I like how they made the filter bigger so you do not pick up any Vignettes. I have the Genus Variable ND also but it gives you an ugly yellow cast when you go to "8" - this one does not.

Terrific ND Filter

By Delmar J.

Unlike several reviewers who complainted about the variable ND filter at the highest settings, I read the instruction book and learned you do not use this at the maximum and minium rotation. You stop at the marked Min and Max settings. No cross star affect when you follow the directions. I have used this on a Nikon 17-55mm F/2.8 lens and got great results. I tested the ND settings at min in one step increments up to the max settings. The pictures were excellent. No issues with AF or AE ...

The Tiffen Variable Neutral Density (ND) Filter - 2 to 8 Stop is a versatile and flexible tool, affording you the convenience of using several Neutral Density filters all in one. Primarily used as a photographic tool for controlling depth of field and exposure, the Variable ND is being sought in the video market as well because it is fast, easy to use, small and light-weight, and does not require additional accessories such as a matte box.

The Tiffen Variable ND filter operates on the same principle as a Circular Polarizer - rotate until you reach your desired effect and shoot. It allows you to have continuous control over the amount of light coming through your lens in an approximate range of 2 (ND 0.6) to 8 (ND 2.4) stops - while maintaining the integrity of your image.

Note: The evenly spaced indexing marks between MIN and MAX do not represent calibrated stops. They are for reference only, to be used as a density bench-mark to return to a previous setting.
