Questions & Answers

Vickie L : will the lens hood attach when this filter is on the lens?SCOTT C : Assuming the lens is the same diameter (e.g. 77mm), you should not have any problems attaching the hood when using this filter. If you are using a step up ring to adapt the filter to the lens, it may not.MARTIN C : Yes.JOE B P : YesCHARLES N : Yes the lens hood will attach when the filter is on the lens The filter attaches to the lens and the hood attaches to the out area of the lens. This is a very good filter and use it on a regular bases. Hope you get as much enjoyment as I have from this filter.
Shopper : Will .9 be enough to get a good looking water blur?YASHVANT J : Yes, it is good enough to get the water blur.ALEX W : It CAN depending on the brightness of the regular scene. If the regular scene is giving you a shutter speed of 1/500, then 3 stops puts you at 1/60 which is not enough to get water blur. Then again, if you are starting with about a 1/30 shutter then 3 stops may drop you down to 1/4 which may slow down nicely fast moving water... etc... Ideally to get creamy water blur, you want to get down to a second or two or 30, so the slowest you can naturally get the scene before putting on the ND filter, the better you will beMATTHEW B : I got this filter for my Sigma 50mm f/1.4, to use wide-open in sunny conditions, and it works well, but could be even darker with a lens that fast. I certainly would not go any lighter density than .9. This is probably more ideal for an f/2.8...JAMES S : Yes. Set the ISO to 100 (or the lowest setting for your camera and experiment with the aperture setting to get the desired results.BRUCE H : 'Good looking' is a relative term, but this filter is helpful in slowing the exposure a bit in any condition. If I recall correctly, this is a 3-stop filter, it should be effective in getting some blur in a stream that is not in direct sunlight. A subject in direct light, though, it may not slow the shutter as much as you will want. I started with this one, eventually got a variable ND and also a 6-stop and 10-stop ND, along with a graded ND... the variety of filters will do different/more/less in varying light. This one is a good place to start, though.MICHAEL J : Yes, this filter will really darken a scene. Depending on the flow, all you need is about 1 sec exposure to create a silky result.WILLIAM A : Depends on the water! I often use mine at ISO 100, f22 at 1/6 sec. for a popular fountain near me. It pushes the limit, since it's usually backlit by bright summer sun. It's probably a 'worst-case' scenario. Of course, for this particular shot, 1/6 is good, since I still want to show some motion. It is not sufficient for a dreamy blur. Wen I want that, I'll also throw my polarizer on. Personally, I'd go with something denser for bright sunlit water features, but this would be perfect for a woodland waterfall or a mountain stream.
Shopper : What does the 8x refer to?OLEG T : The numbers in the Neutral Density filters designators refer to the amount by which they reduce the light to the camera sensor. 8x means that the ambient light will be reduced 8 times when passing through this filter. (0.9 means the same, just in different system). Every 0.3 ND number reduces the light by one stop, or 2x. So, 0.6 ND equals 4x reduction in light, or 2 “stops”; 0.9 equals 8x reduction in light , or 3 ” stops”; 1.2 equals 16x reduction in light, or 4 “stops”. Simply put, with ND 8x (0.9) you’ll be able to increase the exposure time 8 times (3 stops) – very useful if you’d like to get that “milky” effect of flowing water for example. You can also stuck ND filters for slowing down the exposure even further. If you use, for example, 2 ND filter with 4x each you’ll slow down the exposure time 16 times (4x4).MATT W : It reduces light by eight f-stopsROBERT R : The higher the number the more the light is blocked from the sensor or film. I use them to give a smoother look to streams or waterfalls. Buy The largest size you can use and then if you need it for smaller size lens you can buy inexpensive stepup rings to fit the other lens.VAL B : I believe the 8x is the lens area opening (or optical density of .9 hence the (0.9) in name of the product). Different companies label NDs differently. Some label them as ND8 which is the same as the "8" in 8x. You put no filter on a lens you had a lens opening or "1". This means that there is no change to amount of light that enters into the lens. If you put an ND2 filter on the lens now the lens opening changes by 1/2. The amount of light entering the lens is cut in half or by one stop. ND4 is 1/4 of the 1/2 so the light again is cut in half from the previous stop and the 1/8 of the 1/4 is another stop. So the ND8 is a three stop light reduction. Wikipedia does a good job explaining the whole math and rational behind it but does require a little creative thinking to grasp it. Tiffen and Cokin are the more cheaper brands but still decent. I use Marumi, Tiffen and B+W for filters. I hope this helps.

Tiffen 77mm 4X Neutral Density Lens - Great Filter for Photos & Video

I take hundreds of pictures outdoors and use neutral density filters on snowy days and during sunny days on and around the water. If you shoot video, you definitely need a neutral density filter. This filter is good for video on days when it's not super bright out, and I use it quite a bit for wildlife videos on Youtube. For bright sunny days, you'll need a higher density filter.

The filter you need

Those filter helped me a lot filming in the daytime. I didn’t have overexposed footage which was the reason I bought in the first place, without it I had recorded footage that I barely saved. This filter took care of that with no problem.

I would recommend this filter. Works as expected and is great quality. Unbeatable for the price. Only 4 stars instead of 5 because it is very hard to remove from the lense.

You need one of these in your bag

If you're not sure why the above title is true, put this filter on your wish list and go find out; the web is filled with tutorials on how to use one. The things that an ND filter lets you do with your camera you simply cannot do any other way are, with a measure of creativity and patience, pretty amazing. One tip: get the Xume adapter/filter rings for whatever lens you think you will use this filter on most. It's nearly impossible to compose your shot with the filter in place, and the Xume system lets you easily place and remove the filter while you are setting up your shot. Tiffen makes some of the best filters on the market; yes, you can pay a lot more, but I would challenge anyone to prove that a ND four-stop filter does a better job than this one. Highly recommended.

Film Shooter

I use the ND filters when using color film.I load up with ISO 400 or 800 film instead of pushing or pulling the color film. Color film is touchy. I collect film cameras, 53 so far in all. Don't have enough ND filters to go around.

so far so good

I'm using the 3-stop 62mm ND filter for video and so far it works well. No noticeable color shifts or loss of sharpness. Only complaint is that there's no convenient case to carry it so I had to use one from a different filter.

Works as advertised

Works as expected. I use it on a Tamron 70-200 2.8 lens. I photograph motocross racing’. I like using a shutter speed of 200 to show the wheels turning. I can use a wide aperture to defocus the background with this with this ND filter.
