Not perfect, but a great lens!

Having used 3rd party lenses before, I expected this one to feel and perform on the same level on my D7100, but I was quite surprised by the superior build quality and performance. Here are the few reasons why I didn't give it 5 stars: 1. Noticeable chromatic aberration. This is easily fixable in Lightroom, but Tokina really could've done a better job of reducing it in-lens. 2. Slight corner distortion on some wide angle shots. This is especially noticeable when a person's face is near the edge of the frame when a shot is taken at 12mm. Lightroom's distortion correction doesn't quite seem to fully fix it either. 3. Slightly limiting zoom range and max aperture. Obviously I know what I was getting when I bought it, but it would be really nice to have either a little more zoom on the long end or perhaps a 2.8-4 variable aperture.

Outstanding Lens

I bought this because I needed a UWA for my landscape work. I looked at Tamron and Nikon but the Nikon lens was way out of my price point. The toss up was between Tamron and Tokina. I am NOT disappointed in the least. Very good reproduction, crisp clear images and does what I need it to do. I have had it less than two weeks and I do not know how I got along before I made this purchase. I would recommend this lens to anyone that is looking for excellent product that is well made and performs perfectly and is reasonably priced.

Typical Tokina

I use this lens typically for close in where one cannot "frame with your feet". Like any UWA pay attention to the diverging lines and the rectilinear design will work as expected. Been using Nikon for about 40 years now with some of thier best lenses. I find no fault with the Tokina glass I own (3 of them) and the build quality is every bit as good as Nikon, or better. The manual clutch works very good as well as the version of silent drive they use. Good job Tokina!

Best DX Wide Angle

It's so nice to finally have a real wide angle for my DX body. I love the focus speed and handling of the lens. I really like the hard stop focus too, I always find myself missing that on Nikon AFS lenses. The f4 aperture is plenty for my uses, especially at this angle of view, I'm even able to shoot at 1/20th and get sharp images. The only complaint is that the af/m clutch mechanism takes some getting used to. The distortion is very low and easily corrected if you need to do so. My first Tokina and 3rd party lens, I must say I'm very impressed.

Beautiful pastels

This Objective has very nice pastel colors, also has far the best performance at this price category. Will be your best friend taking photos of buildings ,landscapes, or inside the buildings, a little distortion can be expected if capturing people very close. This wide angle 12-24 mm gives the "I am there" feeling for your pictures. The 3 year warranty speaks for itself.Have fun!!

Well made and VERY sharp. The built-in motor works great with the Nikon D5100. My only complaint is that the noise of the motor is quite loud.

Great Lens for the Money

I bought this lens mainly to use with automotive rig shots but after using it I found that I really liked the ultrawide style. In my research I found that this lens was one of the sharpest ultrawides, well built and a great deal, which convinced me to purchase it. It is great for landscape photography, creative portraits, automotive photoshoots and night photography. I would prefer to have a fast lens but F/4 is not too limiting. Overall this lens is always a go to when I am looking for a shot that will be different than other photographers perspectives.

Nice and wide

Nice and wide, fixed aperture It was a toss up between this lens and the Tokina 8-16 f/2.8 For my use this was a more useable foal range.

Ultra-wide dream lens

Once you get used to the vignetting it is easy to avoid (12mm @ f4.0 is a NO-NO) Got excellent pictures on a trip to Bryce/Zion that were impossible on my minimum 24mm standard zoom.

Good lens

I use this lens for landscape photos and it's been pretty good. It autofocuses reasonably fast. It's maximum aperture is f4, but you'll want to stop it down anyway for landscape or outdoor shots. There were complaints about flare in the older version but so far I haven't seen any big problems with this one. It has good sharpness, built like a tank, 77mm filter threads; it's a little heavy, but that's because it's very sturdily made and it fits well on a D7000, not too bulky. I really didn't want to stray from buying Nikon lenses, but in this case Tokina is working out just fine, especially at $600 less than Nikon.

Great lense

I use this lens primarily for interior architectural photography and I love it. Like most Nikon users I was very hesitant to use a non-Nikon lens. After reading more reviews than necessary I decided to chance it and I am not disappointed. The lens has pro quality build and is tack sharp. Distortion is as would be expected but is not difficult to fix in PP.

Happy with the Lens

I'm happy with this lens and I don't notice the weight on the camera. But I notice it when it's in my bag.

Waited too long

I looked at both the Nikon and Tokina wide angle DX lens. After reading many reviews I got the Tokina and I'm happy with it. In some ways it/s nicer than the nikon equivalent. I like the auto/manual slide ring to quickly go to manual focus without taking my eye from the finder. I also like that the distance scale is printed on the lens. It seems very well made. I did get the Nikon NC filter (77mm) and the lens cap fits well on it. The lens hood does leave a shadow at the shorter focal length when using a flash indoors but I think all lenses of this focal length do.

Tokina 12-24mm DX II -- Challenges Nikon

This is my first non-Nikon lens. It is being used on my Nikon D300s APS-C sensor camera ("DX" format). I purchased this lens after doing some research and reading that Tokina has had many awards for the optical and mechanical quality of their lenses.Let me tell you that this lens is GREAT and as far as I can tell, is as sharp as any Nikon lens I have, and I have some good ones, both for use in "DX" and "FX" format (on a Nikon D700). The brightness of this lens is smooth and consistent across its entire field of view. If my Nikon lenses are any better, I just cannot see it, and I tend to be very critical of optical sharpness. The lens weighs 19 oz., and is well built, using brass metal internally where Nikon uses plastic. The zooom is tight to turn, and you are not going to accidentally bump or shift it off-distance. Another really nice feature is the AF-to-Manual shift, which you do by 'snapping' the focus ring forward or backward. The ring makes a nice 'click' into its detent position and this feature is MUCH nicer than fumbling for the slide-switch as we have on Nikon lenses. (Plus you will not accidentally hit the wrong switch as you could do with a Nikon, such as hitting the LOCK switch on their zoom lenses).I made some interior shots of my house, and some shots of our cats. All photo's are as sharp as can be, and individual hairs and whiskers on the cats are very sharp. Color and contrast with this lens is GREAT.If seriously pressed to find fault with the lens itself, I really cannot find any. The only complaint I can possibly have is the front lens cap. It is almost a duplicate in design of Nikon's, and for me (and I have small fingers!) the 'recess steps' of the cap are very difficult to grip, resulting in slipping and dropping of the cap. But what are we going do; this is not a really serious issue. This lens is less than HALF the cost of Nikon's equivalent, and if you purchase this lens it should make you VERY happy. Keep in mind that with very wide angle lenses such as this, you need to think creatively and get 'down and dirty' and 'up close' with these lenses at their widest fields of view to obtain some very dramatic shots. Wide angle lenses are F-U-N! The more experimenting you do the more interesting things you learn (and learn to SEE).Tokina has peaked my interest with this Nikon-challenging product and this will undoubtedbly not be the last Tokina lens I purchase. (BTW- Tokina is made in Japan for those not in the know. They are not made in some 'other country' where the machinery, labor force and quality control may be less than up-to-par).For many purposes you may be better off using manual rather than autofocus. The reason? Creativity -- focusing where YOU want it to focus, especially when you want a close-in focus. And, the autofocus of this lens DOES work very well. Some newbie users of Wide Angle lenses who complain about the autofocus of these lenses may not realize that they might have been in a circumstance where manual focus would have been their BEST choice. One last thing. The best filter to use on wide angle lenses is the THINNEST multicoated high quality filter you can get. The thinner filters are best for reducing the possibility of vignetting with wide angle lens' very wide fields of view as the filter ring by design is lower in height above the lens' view than a 'standard height' filter. Stacking of filters may inevitably lead to some vignetting on ANY lens.Best [$] I have spent. THANK YOU TOKINA!

Overall excellent lens

Excellent Lens, Solid construction, albeit quite heavy Has a significant amount of distortion when zoomed out to 12mm, this is excellent for landscape photography but can lead to unatural distortions when taking photo's of people.

Really nice lens

This is a great lens for wide landscapes or interior shots yet has a very nice focal range going up to 24mm. effective angle of view is 18-36mm on a full frame covering almost all wide angle needs. Really nice build quality,Tokina builds em like it was 20 years ago (heavy and solid). Very sharp and usable even wide open. focus and zoom direction match Nikon's own lenses. Be aware that this lens will not auto-focus in live view with the Nikon D7000. If you want or need focus using live view you may want to consider the Nikkor lens even at the higher price. I can not speak to the version I of this lens since I have not tried it.That's the only reason I gave 3 stars instead of 4. If possible I would have given the lens 3 1/2. Focus is slightly loud in auto focus but since it does not need to travel far it is very fast and the sound is a very quick and short ZZZZIP. Both zoom and manual focus are well dampened and accurate. The focus clutch is easy to use, but it is just a touch too easy to engage and disengage. Flare seems to be fairly well controlled. Overall a great lens at a superb price. I would not hesitate to reccomend it.

Great lens

I wanted a lens that was wider than my kit lens. This Tokina really fits the bill. It is wide enough on a crop sensor to be considered a true wide angle or even an ulta wide. Yet it is not limited to that range since it goes up to 24mm (36mm angle of view if it was full frame). The fixed constant aperture is a real plus. Image quality is very very good and flare is controlled fairly well. Construction of the lens is typical Tokina (over built). One great feature of Tokina Nikon mount lenses is that the zoom and focus rings match Nikon's own rotation.

Very high quality lens

I'm the kind of guy that likes to use Nikon stuff with my Nikon stuff so buying an "off brand" lens went against my gut. Reviews here and elsewhere on the web convinced me to give this one a try and I am not disappointed. The lens feels and operates as well as any of my Nikon lenses and is very sharp. I purchased it mainly for architectural interiors and have only shot one with it so far but was very satisfied with the performance. I check heavy as a con above but that's only because I know some people are very worried about weight. If you intend to pack this thing you may want to consider a lighter lens but the weight doesn't bother me.

Well worth the money

This lens really is better than what I was expecting. I can take shots I never could with a standard lens. The lens lives up to all the reviews I read before I bought. I was really happy with the sharpness on the edges and focus is quite fast. This lens is well worth the money and more.

Tokina 12-24mm Specifications

About Tokina 12-24mm

Tokina AT-x 124 PRO DX II 12-24mm f/4 AF lens exclusively for Digital SLR cameras with APS-C sensors.* This lens gives the Digital photographer an ultra wide-angle zoom lens that has the equivalent angle of view to an 18-36mm in full frame format.

The model II The Nikon mount AT-x 124 PRO DX II has a built-in AF motor drive. The motor inside the lens was loaded onto the Nikon mount specification anew. The AF operates smoothly and quietly due to a DC motor that uses a new AF control gear assembly. With the built-in motor, the lens can be used in AF mode with the Nikon D60 and D40 and other silent wave bodies.

In addition the DX II Version offers an improved multi-coating. The new multicoating helps reduce reflections that can cause flare and ghosting even more than in the AT-x 124 PRO DX.

The AT-x 124 PRO DX II features the one-touch focus clutch mechanism. To use the one-touch focus clutch mechanism, move the focus ring forward, towards the front of the lens, for AF or back for MF. This allows for a fast and easy manual over-ride in difficult lighting situations.
* The lens is designed for Digital cameras with APS-C sized CMOS and CCD sensors (DX) , not designed for cameras with Full Frame sensors (FX).
