FAQ

What is the main purpose of the Vivitar Variable ND Filter?

The main purpose of the Vivitar Variable ND Filter is to reduce the amount of light entering the camera lens. This allows photographers to adjust the aperture and shutter speed for more creative control in different lighting conditions.

What does 'ND2 to ND1000' mean?

ND2 to ND1000 refers to the range of light reduction the filter can provide. ND2 means the filter can reduce light entering the lens by a factor of 2, while ND1000 means it can reduce light by a factor of 1000.

How does the single coating on the filter benefit my photography?

The single coating on the Vivitar Variable ND Filter reduces reflections and ghosting. This results in clearer and more accurate images.

Is the Vivitar Variable ND Filter compatible with all camera lenses?

The Vivitar Variable ND Filter is designed to fit lenses with a 72mm diameter, which is a common size for many lenses. However, it's always best to check the specifications of your lens before purchasing.

Does the filter affect the color or hue of the images?

No, the Vivitar Variable ND Filter is designed to reduce the intensity of all wavelengths of light equally, ensuring no changes in hue or color rendition.

Shopper : Does the Vivitar Variable NDX Filter reduce image quality at all?RAY A : I am pleased with the Vivitar Variable NDX filter, and use it more frequently than a poloraizing filter, because the capability to vary filtering strength. I do notice more change to the sky when using a higher setting and rarely go near the maximum settings.ROBERT P : Does the Vivitar V NDX reduce image quality? Not that I have found. It does take some getting aquainted with due to the lack of light necessary to focus. Make sure that you attach the filter tight enough to rotate the outer ring only, and hold the lens focus ring tight while rotating the filter ring. It has made sunrise beach photos a breeze, the wave flatten to produce a fog with longer exposure. So much easier than placing on multiple ND filters on the lens.ROBERT S : it is a great addition to your gadget bag i did not see any loss of image quality it really slowes down flowing water to a nice sliky effect or you can buy the singhray filter for $500 ouchBRUCE B : The Vivitar Variable NDX filter was used when taking photo's of waterfalls and did not appear to reduce the picture quality of the print.BONNIE LEE F : This product is working out well for me. I've enjoyed taking photos of waterfalls and have not noticed any problem yet in reduced image quality. When I can afford a more expensive lens, I will probably look for a higher quality Variable filter. Right now I'm pleased with this filter.
Shopper : Does this filter have any protective coatings to avoid scratches?RAY A : No protective coating that I am aware of, but then I am not aware of any filters with protective coatings. Usually the best-bet is to buy glass filters and avoid plastic filters which scratch more easily. The good-news is any filter will help protect your more expensive lens. You might also try mounting (stacking) a ultraviolet filter (less expensive filter) in front of a more expensive filter?DANNY C : No , it doesn't have it . It'll do the job as a filter but I highly recommend a better brand. It's not a well quality made filter such as Hoya,etc.....SANDRA P : I'm not sure why Adorama is asking this question of someone who has purchased this filter. It's a filter they sell and should know whether it has a coating or not. Since a protective coating to resist scratches isn't indicated in the "feature list" and because of the relative low cost compared to other ND filters, I'm assuming there is no protective coating. I purchased this filter because I didn't want to invest a lot in a filter I won't use too often. I have used the filter and the optics are adequate but if you're going to use it quite often, you might want to consider a filter with the protective coating you want.ROBERT P : Hi, I do not know. Having worked in a camera store at one time, I have found most filters to have some anti-scratch coating. You would be best to search Vivitar NDX Filters from the manufacturer for the specs. I have found the filter to be very good and useful. Just used it this afternoon on bright snow, ice and waterfalls to slow the motion of melt runoff. Best wishes.ROBERT S : i think it does ??? what do the specs say and i will respond bob stegmaierROBERT L : i've had mine for about 18 months and been very happy with it. They give you a nice padded bag to keep it in, and I use it with the new Tamron 18-270 zoom lens on a Canon EOS 7D body. I use it primarily to shoot water falls where I want a lacy effect and practically always use it with the camera on a tripod. I'm careful to keep all my filters in their proper storage device and if on the camera, I always have the lens cover over it so am not bothered by this paritcular filter not having a coating. I'm not bothered with scratches on any of them. I use a circular polarizer frequently for every day shots without a tripod and have no problems with scratches on it either.ARTHUR D L : I do not believe it does. At this price I doubt it.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?ZACH B : cheapDALE S : Vivitar is a trusted brand I have used for many, many years. My first purchase was back in the seventies when I was in college.GILBERT R : For water photography - waterfalls, lakes, rivers......MICHAEL H : I have been learning from closed captioned YouTube channel about Nd filters, for photography.Alexey Z : Good price and aligned with the expectationsJohn B : Name Brand; good price; fast delivery.BONNIE LEE F : To photograph water during mid day. Worked great.JAMES L : Great filter if you want to darken your scene and being able to adjust the darkness to your needs is more convenient than having eight separate filters.

Good lens, one quirk

Filter works great. My only gripe is my 77mm lens caps seems to be a tiny bit too small. This means I'll need to purchase an additional lens cap and hope it works. We'll see!

Budget variable ND Works Well

This variable ND does a great job for the price. Fits nicely on the lenses I use it on and doesn't seem to leave any obvious color cast on the image at any intensity, whether it's photo or video.

Vivitar variable density filter review.

Works very well for such an inexpensive price. Unfortunately the number for the amount of density is not displayed only hash marks. Still. a nice piece of equipment.

Great value less than great performance but price is right and you get what you pay for

Needed it quickly for a México trip. Adorama shipped it expeditious. It’s two pieces of not the top quality glass over the lens but the variable density is useful and as I was shooting grab Candids for a family gathering it works just fine

Perfect for water shots

I've been frustrated trying to get good water shots of moving rivers, waterfalls, etc. A friend of mine has this filter and she recommended it to me. It's inexpensive so I figured it would be worth a try, Great results for a reasonable price.

can't use 10 stops

the Idea is good because you can use differed density but don't use it for 10 stops you will get the X in your pics. This was my first ND filter to figure out what I needed...

Vivitar ND filters work great and affordable

Vivitar ND lens works excellent for long exposure photos, it is easy to use and affordable, spending more money on expensive filters does not make the photo better, it is the photographer taking their time even when using non expensive filters... Vivitars quality is great for me it does what it is intended to do for my needs and I would recommend it ... And Adorama had just what I needed at the price I was looking for ....

Good but...

Great filter but your 67 diameter cap it will not fit since the filter is bigger than the thread. So it's not good to leave it on. Thankfully i had some KUVRD universal caps.

The filter is well made and easy to use. Ordering from Adorama was quick and easy and shipping exceeded my expectations and it was here well within a week.

Handy filter for shooting waterfalls

Handy filter for shooting waterfalls. No need to carry a pile of filters....just turn this one till you get the desired effect. Also handy for shooting in the woods where a slower shutter helps to increase contrast in an all green setting.

Not meant for good quality pictures.

Not worth if you want good quality pictures. Pictures vignette a lot as you increase f stops. You get decent quality pictures till 3-4 stops only. Even then you can spot weird dark fringes which just keep getting darker for higher f stops. Buy only if you want a cheap 2-4 stop variable ND filter.

By James N.

So far, so good... especially if you’re on a budget. I’m relatively new to shooting and just want to build up a solid kit for s good price so I can learn and refine the basics before investing more. I’ve used this filter a few times for long exposures and I’ve been happy with the results.

Great!

By REBECCA H.

Solid ND filter, easy to use! These are great for shooting in bright light when you want to keep your aperture wide. I use for both photography and videography.

Let the Vivitar NDX Filters elevate your photography to new heights. These adjustable filters, ranging from ND2 to ND1000, are meticulously crafted from high-quality, solid optical materials, ensuring durability and longevity. Each filter undergoes a rigorous heat-treatment process to prevent any potential distortion or movement, providing you with consistent, reliable results every time.

Our Variable Neutral Density (ND) filter is designed to reduce the intensity of all wavelengths of light equally, ensuring no changes in hue or color rendition. This feature allows you to capture images as true to life as possible, enhancing the authenticity of your photography.

The primary function of these standard photographic neutral density filters is to provide photographers with greater flexibility in adjusting aperture, exposure time, and subject blur. This adaptability is crucial in varying situations and atmospheric conditions, enabling you to capture the perfect shot regardless of the environment.

Rather than reducing the aperture to limit light, photographers can utilize the Vivitar ND filter to control light exposure. This allows for precise shutter speed adjustments based on the specific motion desired, and the freedom to set the aperture as needed.

Experience the versatility and effectiveness of the 72mm Variable Neutral Density (ND) Filter, a must-have tool for any photography enthusiast. Whether you're shooting in low light conditions, aiming for a shallower depth of field, or working on abstracts with a slow shutter speed, this filter is your key to unlocking endless creative possibilities.
